12-22-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

We just had a major Star Wars film drop, with yet another one to fall at the same time next year, but why did Star Wars: Episode VIII shift its release pattern back to summer 2017? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that James Cameron is carrying the big stick that Christmas with the release of Avatar 2, which he re-confirmed to the Montreal Gazette along with when digital cameras start rolling on the first in a trilogy of sequels. “Christmas of ’17 is the target,” Cameron confirmed of the expected release of Avatar 2. “At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story. We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. (We’ve finished) all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

So there you have it… or do we? Word came at the beginning of this year that Avatar 2 had been delayed from December 2016 to December 2017 for further script development, a luxury J.J. Abrams did NOT have on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which Disney insisted come out within the 2015 calendar despite protestations by the filmmakers. Now that the ever-story-conscious Cameron has had his development cushion, he should be all primed to deliver more Na’vi excitement as promised… except this is JAMES CAMERON we’re talking about, the guy who forced 20th Century Fox to (expensively) shift the summer release dates on both Titanic and the first Avatar to December slots when he decided the films just weren’t ready. Granted, no one at the studio was complaining once the grosses came in, but Cameron is a perfectionist. When he says he’s more concerned with the new trilogy dropping a year apart, that could mean a global shift to summer 2018, 2019 and 2020 for all three films if he feels like Part 2 needs more time to bake. Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, Avatar 2 and two additional Avatar sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are currently being written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. The original 2009 Avatar remains the top grossing movie of all time with $2.782 billion at the worldwide box office.

I'm glad Cameron is able to confirm this. For a long time it was speculated when the film(s) was going to come out and now we know. I like this timeframe because the first film was released in December 2009 so it looks like the trend will continue until 2019. The only problem with this date is that fact That I think no one cares about Avatar anymore. I think it's been way too long for the sequel to be released and some people barely remember watching the film. I think this film will be something great to see, but it won't do the business that the first film did at the box office.

Sony Pictures Animation has announced today the release dates for three of their upcoming animated films starting with the previously-announced The Emoji Movie set to debut on August 11, 2017 and a new adaptation of Peter Rabbit to be released on March 23, 2018. In addition, the previously-revealed animated Spider-Man movie from 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller will now open on December 21, 2018 instead of earlier that summer on July 20. The pair are masterminding the project, writing the treatment and producing the film, though they will sit out on directing as their next project will likely be the upcoming Untitled Han Solo Movie. Revealed this summer, Sony was the winner of an intense bidding war for The Emoji Movie, which will be co-written by Eric Siegel (TBS’s “Men At Work”) and Anthony Leondis (Igor), with the latter directing the feature. Leondis reportedly created a series of storyboards outlining the entire film based on the tiny characters, which also drew interest from rivals Paramount and Warner Bros. Little is known about Peter Rabbit, originally created by Beatrix Potter, who has been the subject of countless television adaptations and even brand new books written about the character by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson.

I really like these release dates. Fire for The Emoji Movie, it's a really stupid idea that logically makes no sense, but that's Sony for you and this date it good because as of right now it isn't going against anything and it will catch Pitch Perfect 3 on it's second week which will be a good thing to take advantage of. For the animated Spider-Man film this is another great date as the film will come out around Christmas, but it might be going up against an Avatar film which might spell trouble for both films so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. As for Peter Rabbit it is going up against a lot of competition that includes The Flash, and an animated Anubis film so it will have it's work cut out for it so you could see the film move to another date in the near future.

Paramount has revealed the debut trailer for Boyhood writer/director Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some, which is something of a spiritual follow-up to his cult classic Dazed and Confused. Rock out with the Everybody Wants Some trailer below! Set in the world of 1980s college life, the story follows a group of college baseball players as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. Get ready for the best weekend ever. Taking its title from a hit song off Van Halen’s 1980 album “Women and Children First,” Everybody Wants Some features an ensemble cast of Will Brittain, Zoey Deutch, Ryan Anthony Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin, Blake Jenner, Glen Powell and Wyatt Russell. The film is written and directed by Richard Linklater and produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures, Richard Linklater and Ginger Sledge. Everybody Wants Some is scheduled to make its world premiere as the Opening Night film for the 23rd edition of SXSW Film on March 11, 2016 in Austin, Texas. Paramount Pictures will release the film in theaters on April 15, 2016.

This was a fantastic trailer. Richard Linklater knows how to capture the lifestyle of both high school and college kids so well and that's how Dazed and Confused was such a big hit and this film looks fantastic. Linklater often makes his films based on her personal life experiences and you can see some if them in this trailer. I don't think the film will be as good as Dazed and Confused, but it does have a lot of potential and if the film is as funny as the trailer then this will be one of the best comedies of the year and I cannot wait to see it.

Paramount Pictures has revealed a new poster with Zoolander 2 cast members Ben Stiller and Penelope Cruz getting a real feel for each other. You can check out the Zoolander 2 poster below. “It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe,” Ben Stiller previously said of the script. “It’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them.” The Zoolander 2 cast includes Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz, Christine Taylor, Kristen Wiig, Cyrus Arnold and Will Ferrell as Jacobim Mugatu, with special appearances expected by Billy Zane, Fred Armisen, Justin Bieber, Kyle Mooney, Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, and more. Zoolander 2 was filmed for 12 weeks in Rome in and around the famed Cinecittà Studios. The first Zoolander was released on September 28, 2001 by Paramount Pictures and earned $60.8 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. It went on to become a massive hit on DVD and fans have, for years, been wondering when Stiller would return for another Derek Zoolander adventure. It seems that we now have the answer as Zoolander 2 is set for a February 12, 2016 release. In addition to headlining, Ben Stiller is directing the much anticipated comedy sequel. He also co-wrote the script with Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) and is producing Zoolander 2 alongside Stuart Cornfeld.

Zoolander 2

This is a really great trailer. It perfectly captures personality of the film and who the characters are in the film. I like how the design of the No. 2 looks like something that would be on fragrance of some sort and that goes along perfectly with the film. It looks like both Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are had a lot of fun making this film and I'm excited to see how it will turn out. I really enjoyed the first film and I think this film can be just as good as that film.

Nia Vardalos, John Corbett and the rest of the Portokalos clan are back in the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 poster, which you can view below. The film is the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Gold Circle Entertainment and HBO present the Playtone production of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, written by Academy Award nominee Vardalos, who stars alongside the entire returning cast of favorites. The movie picks up with Toula and Ian struggling to find time for each other while managing their lives and a teenage daughter. A Portokalos family secret will be revealed and bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding. Although the sequel marks the official filmic followup to Toula and Ian’s story, Vardalos starred in a short-lived CBS series titled “My Big Fat Greek Life” in 2003 which featured most of the original characters in a slightly retooled set-up. Lainie Kazan, Michael Constantine, Andrea Martin, Ian Gomez, Alex Wolff, Elena Kampouris, John Stamos, Rita Wilson and Joey Fatone round out the cast of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee, Waking Ned Devine) directs the next chapter of the film that is once again produced by Rita Wilson and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Paul Brooks and Steven Shareshian return to executive produce alongside Vardalos and Scott Niemeyer. Universal Pictures will distribute the comedy domestically and in select international territories beginning March 25, 2016.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

I like this poster a lot. It's basically nothing new as it is pretty much an update of the first poster and all it does is show the new characters along with the old ones. I kinda wish they would've done something different, but I understand why they did what they did.. I'm really looking forward to this film because the first film was absolutely hilarious and it's a film that everyone should see. I'm sure the nostalgia will be very prominent in this film and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this film will build upon the first one.
