12-9-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Walt Disney Pictures has released the teaser trailer for director Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, The BFG. You can watch The BFG movie trailer below. Disney’s The BFG movie tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams. Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows, but Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see Queen Victoria (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all. Directed by Steven Spielberg from a script by Melissa Mathison, who last teamed with Spielberg on E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, The BFG movie will open in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016, the year that coincides with the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth.

This was a nice little trailer. it did a nice job of keeping the BFG hidden for the most part and it did a nice job of teasing you a little for the film. I've heard people say that they loved reading the book when they where younger and to be honest I've never read the book, but I may read it beforehand or I may just go in blind and enjoy it for what it's worth. I'm excited to see Spielberg get back to a children's movie because he did such a fantastic job with E.T and I'm looking forward to seeing how he will do with the material.

Following a report last month that Tom Cruise is in negotations to star in Universal Pictures upcoming The Mummy reboot, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella has entered talks to play the title role. It was previously rumored that director Alex Kurtzman’s take may include a female version of the monster and that now appears to be exactly the route the reboot is headed. The Mummy offers a modern take on the legendary creature with plans for The Mummy to lead into Universal Pictures’ envisioned “shared universe” of monster movies. Kurtzman is set to direct the film from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). The Mummy reboot is set for release on March 24, 2017 with another Untitled Universal Monster Movie set to follow it on March 30, 2018. The Mummy was made famous on the big screen by Boris Karloff in Karl Freund’s 1932 feature. Subsequent sequels to the original The Mummy saw Tom Tyler (who played Captain Marvel/Shazam in the original 1941 serials) and later Lon Chaney Jr. playing a different mummy than the one Karloff played. Stephen Sommers’ more recent The Mummy and The Mummy Returns films set Arnold Vosloo in the title role. Jet Li then played he villain in Rob Cohen’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Sofia Boutella can be seen on the big screen next year in Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond. Although official details of her character have not yet been revealed, the actress was spotted on set back in August in some very detailed alien makeup. Star Trek Beyond hits the big screen July 22, 2016.

I think this is terrific casting. Sofia Boutella has quietly become a commodity after her villainous performance in Kingsman earlier this year and I think this is a great step for her career. It's also refreshing to see a main female villain  in this type of film and hopefully it can start a trend for future films. It's going to be fun seeing her go 1 on 1 with Tom Cruise and those are going to be some fun fights. This film has a lot of potential and that's mainly attributed to the fact that Tom Cruise is staring in it and I'm looking forward to this Monster cinematic universe with this film starting it all.

Following the first images that were released last night, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first poster for David Yates’ upcoming The Legend of Tarzan! You can check out The Legend of Tarzan poster below. In The Legend of Tarzan, it has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash. The Legend of Tarzan cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson and Djimon Hounsou. Tarzan made his first appearance in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes. The jungle hero would go to be the focus of an additional 23 novels by the author. In the century since the character’s inception, Tarzan has been adapted into just about every medium, including dozens of different feature film iterations. Director David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films, has himself already returned to the Wizarding World. He’s directing the upcoming spinoff series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Look for that film just a few months after The Legend of Tarzan. The jungle adventure hits theaters July 1, 2016 with Beasts following on November 18, 2018.

The Legend of Tarzan

This is a pretty bland and boring poster. We've seen these types of poster before and with the background that was available, the poster would've been better served using the jungle to it's advantage. This has been a very mysterious film that we've not heard a lot about in the recent months and it'll be interesting to see how everything plays out. The cast looks amazing and I'm looking to see how Alexander Skarsgard will portray the character after the various incarnations we've seen before.

Last week, it was confirmed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie would return to helm the upcoming sixth film in the long running series, and now ShowBiz411 reports that Rogue Nation star Rebecca Ferguson will also return. This marks the first time that a leading lady has reprised her role in a Mission: Impossible film, though Mission: Impossible III‘s Michelle Monaghan did re-appear in an uncredited cameo for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. It was previously reported that production on the film could begin as early as August 2016. McQuarrie will write and direct the film, which will see the return of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. This also marks the first time a director has helmed more than one film in the franchise. Brian De Palma directed the first Mission: Impossible, which was followed by sequels directed by John Woo, J.J, Abrams and Brad Bird. Christopher McQuarrie scripted Rogue Nation alongside Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). Released on July 31, the film went on to gross more than $682 million at the worldwide box office. Also starring Jeremy Renner (Marvel’s The Avengers, Kill the Messenger), Alec Baldwin (The Departed, “30 Rock”), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World’s End), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead), Simon McBurney (The Last King of Scotland, The Theory of Everything) and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, The Red Tent), Rogue Nation is slated to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray December 15.

I love this casting. Rebecca Ferguson was a pleasant surprise to Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation and I thought she really elevated the film to another level. I think her coming back along with McQuarrie shows that they are wanting a little more cohesiveness within the cast and making her more of a regular like Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Jeremy Renner. Mission Impossible 6 is going to be a really fun film and hopefully it can be just as good if not better than Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

Deadline reports that writers Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari, members of the Transformers writer’s room who previously did production re-write work on Ant-Man, have signed on to co-write the script for Ant-Man and The Wasp with star Paul Rudd. The trio will reportedly work with director Adam McKay, who almost directed Ant-Man following Edgar Wright’s departure, on a treatment for the script before penning the full screenplay. Ant-Man and The Wasp will feature the return of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang alongside Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne with Michael Douglas also expected to reprise the role of Hank Pym in the film. Peyton Reed will return to direct the film. “That was one of the things that was important to me in the first movie when I came on was emphasizing the Wasp more, both Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne,” Reed previously said. “It’s a crucial part. It’s a crucial part because in the comic books, with the exception of the first handful of Ant-Man stories, Wasp came on pretty early on in the comics in the ’60s and you really thought of them as a partnership, a romantic partnership as well as a hero team. It’s going to be fun to play around with all the aspects of that in this movie.” Ant-Man and The Wasp is set for release on July 6, 2018. Its predecessor has now grossed over $518 million at the global box office.

I really like these additions, Now granted they were in the recent Transformers writers room and I was a little indifferent about the whole thing, but they are good additions. The reason for that is because they have worked together with a lot of talented writers in the writers room and they've gained valuable experience. They haven't really wrote any films so I'm anxious to see them work with Rudd and McKay for the film. This is going to be an interesting film especially after the events of Ant-Man and it'll be nice to see a duo as the main stars of a Marvel movie.
