11-30-15/12-1-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Last summer, it was announced that director Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Lethal Weapon) and his The Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker were working on an “inventive sequel” to 20th Century Fox’s Predator. Now, Dekker has revealed on his Facebook (via AVPGalaxy.net) that the script for the film has been completed and turned in. Details on the film are currently under wraps but producer John Davis previously told Collider: “The writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’” The original Predator was directed by John McTiernan and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of a United States special forces team that comes under attack from an alien entity that prizes the thrill of the hunt above all else. It was followed by a direct sequel, Predator 2, in 1990 before crossing over with Fox’s Alien franchise for two additional sequels, Alien vs. Predator and AvP: Requiem. In 2010, Nimrod Antal helmed a reboot with a new feature, Predators. Black is no stranger to the Predator franchise either, having starred in the original film as Hawkins after having been brought on to help rework the 1987 film. He will direct the film from Dekker’s script, the story for which the pair created together. No release date has been set for the movie.

This is pretty great news to hear. Predator is one of those franchises that was really popular in the 1980's as somewhat of a copy of the Alien franchise and then it attempted to come back to the forefront 20 years later and it just failed. I think that a true sequel is necessary for the franchise to be successful. I think Shane Black is the perfect fit for the franchise because he's been there and done that so I think going to back to the well is a good move for his career. The franchise has a lot of potential to be a great franchise today and I can't wait to see if this film finally gets made.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie was in talks to helm the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6, and the director has taken to Twitter to confirm that he will return. It was previously reported that production on the film could begin as early as August 2016. McQuarrie will write and direct the film, which will see the return of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. This also marks the first time a director has helmed more than one film in the franchise. Brian De Palma directed the first Mission: Impossible, which was followed by sequels directed by John Woo, J.J, Abrams and Brad Bird. Christopher McQuarrie scripted Rogue Nation alongside Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). Released on July 31, the film went on to gross more than $682 million at the worldwide box office. Also starring Jeremy Renner (Marvel’s The Avengers, Kill the Messenger), Alec Baldwin (The Departed, “30 Rock”), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World’s End), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead), Simon McBurney (The Last King of Scotland, The Theory of Everything) and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, The Red Tent), Rogue Nation is slated to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray December 15.

This is great news to hear. As I mentioned before when it was rumored that this could happen, I'm excited for this. Christopher McQuarrie was the perfect fit for the franchise and I'm glad that he is coming back. I think he just brings a different dynamic to these films and I think he can continue the trend of each film being better than the last (except I think 3 is better than 4). The franchise is just absolute crazy one thanks to the stunts Tom Cruise does and I'm anxious to see which stunts he pulls off in Mission Impossible 6

Universal Pictures has debuted a new Ride Along 2 trailer, which you can check out below. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube lead the returning lineup of Ride Along 2, the sequel to the blockbuster action-comedy that gave us the 2014’s most popular comedy duo. The film earned $153.9 million worldwide last year on a budget of just $25 million. Joining Hart and Cube for the next chapter of the series are director Tim Story, as well as Cube’s fellow producers — Will Packer, Matt Alvarez and Larry Brezner — who will produce alongside Cube. Also set to star in Ride Along 2 are Ken Jeong (“Community,” The Hangover Trilogy), Benjamin Bratt (Despicable Me 2, “Law & Order”), Olivia Munn (“The Newsroom,” X-Men: Apocalypse), Bruce McGill (Collateral, “Rizzoli & Isles”), Tika Sumpter (Ride Along, Salt) and Sherri Shepherd (“The View,” Precious). Scripted by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi and based on characters created by Greg Coolidge, Ride Along 2 is executive produced by Nicolas Stern, Ron Muhammad, Scott Bernstein, Chris Bender and JC Spink. Ride Along 2 hits theaters on January 15, 2016.

I actually liked the trailer. The first film to me wasn't great at all and it almost made my list of least favorite films of 2014 and I wasn't looking forward to a sequel when it was announced, but this trailer was pretty good. I laughed quite a bit more than I expected and this looks to be a lot funnier than the first film. I'm a fan of both Ice Cube and Kevin Hart and they have tremendous chemistry together and I'm anxious to see how this film does compared to the first film.

Sony Pictures Classics (via Entertainment Weekly) has revealed a new trailer for the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light, opening in theaters on March 25, 2016. You can check out the I Saw the Light trailer below. I Saw the Light is the story of the legendary country western singer Hank Williams, who in his brief life created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life. Written and directed by Marc Abraham, I Saw the Light is based on Colin Escott’s award-winning biography and stars Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olsen, Bradley Whitford, David Krumholtz and Cherry Jones. RatPac Entertainment’s Brett Ratner and Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert produced the film, with G. Marq Roswell and Abraham. James Packer of RatPac Entertainment and Jason Cloth of Creative Wealth Media Finance executive produced. Notable director of photography Dante Spinotti is the cinematographer for the film.

This was a fantastic trailer. I'm not the biggest Hank Williams Sr. fan, but this get me really interested to see this film and learn more about him. Tom Hiddelston was an odd choice for the role, but seeing the trailer shows me he was the right choice and a fun fact is that he does his own singing and while it may not be the best possible version, it's still good enough for the film. I'm hoping they go a little darker for the film because Hank Williams did have a dark lifestyle and maybe this could top another classic country music bio-pic in Walk the Line.

20th Century Fox has released an all-new international poster for the long-awaited film adaptation of Deadpool and it does a good job of showing off the Merc with a Mouth’s assets. You can check it out below. Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Reynolds stars as the title character alongside T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat and Ed Skrein as Ajax. The film will also feature the mutant Colossus, though Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not appear as the character. Reynolds has also expressed a desire that Hugh Jackman might cameo as Wolverine, though it remains unconfirmed as to whether or not he will actually appear. Tim Miller is directing the movie from a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Confirmed to be rated R, Deadpool is scheduled for a release on February 12, 2016.

Deadpool

I really love this poster. Deadpool is one of the funniest characters in comic book history and the tagline on the poster is just perfect. The last line is just too funny and something that we've never seen on a poster before and only a Deadpool movie can get away with it. This is one of the films that is flying under the radar as of now and everything I've seen so far just gets me excited to see it and I don't know if I can't wait longer for this film to come out.

Deadline reports that FOX has closed a development deal with Sylvester Stallone to executive produce Rambo: New Blood, a television continuation of the long-running film series. The show would focus on Stallone’s John Rambo and his son J.R., described as an ex-Navy SEAL for the series, and will be written by Die Hard and The Fugitive screenwriter Jeb Stuart. Though unconfirmed, Stallone is expected to reprise his role as John Rambo. Entertainment One and Avi Lerner’s Millennium Films will produce the series, which has put the previously-reported fifth film, Rambo: Last Blood, on hold. The film series began in 1982 with First Blood, adapted from the novel by David Morrell, with modest success. It was followed by Rambo: First Blood Part II in 1985, which remains the highest-grossing film in the series with over $300 million at the global box office. Rambo III was released in 1988 and the character would take a twenty year break before returning in 2008’s Rambo. Development on the television adaptation of Rambo began back in 2013, though reports circulated at the time that Stallone would not be involved. This also marks the second foray of the character on the small screen as an animated series, Rambo: The Force of Freedom, aired briefly in 1986.

I'm really sad to hear this news. I love the Rambo franchise and the last film was just so brutal and violent that I want to see a new film and if it can top the last film. I think a tv show is a way to go, but this franchise is meant to be on the big screen and I'm really disappointed that the fifth film is on hold. Hopefully the tv show is successful enough for the fifth film to be made.
