12-10-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Is Cate Blanchett joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Variety reports that the two-time Academy Award winner has entered talks to play a mystery character in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Who might that mystery character be? It’s not hard to imagine Cate Blanchett as Asgard’s own Enchantress  or even to picture the Carol star as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. Of course, Cate Blanchett successfully pulled off playing Bob Dylan, so the possibilities are pretty much endless. Thor: Ragnarok, aimed to close out the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Asgardian trilogy, will continue the cliffhanger ending of Thor: The Dark World wherein it was revealed that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has secretly taken the Asgardian throne in guise of his adoptive father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). The story will reportedly center on a “distant planet” that is “not Asgard and not Earth.” It’s unclear what this planet might be in the context of the film, although the constant rumors (amid denials) of a Planet Hulk film are likely to feed into fan speculation. It has also been confirmed that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will play a major part in the storyline. The “Phase Three” entry recently brought aboard 2013 “Black List” screenwriter Stephany Folsom. Previously, Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle have worked on the script. Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows helmer Taika Waititi, meanwhile, is directing Thor: Ragnarok. Look for it to open in theaters on November 3, 2017 in 3D/2D theaters and IMAX.

If this comes to fruition, then this might be the best casting ever for a comic book film. Now granted we don't know who she is playing, but still adding Cate Blanchett to your film instantly gives you credibility. Cate Blanchett is easily one of the greatest actresses of all-time and getting to possibly see her in a comic book film gets me excited. I honestly don't have a clue who she will be playing nor do I know where to start. The article mentioned Captain Marvel and I think that's a great fit for her, but she is 46 and I don't know if she wants to be locked down to do multiple films over the course of 10 years, so I expect that her role will be minimal, but very important.

After weeks of teasing from director Bryan Singer, 20th Century Fox has revealed that the X-Men: Apocalypse trailer will debut tomorrow and with it revealed the first official poster for the film. You can check out the X-Men: Apocalypse poster below. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.” X-Men: Apocalypse also stars Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Lucas Till as Havok and newcomers Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Lana Condor as Jubilee. Oscar Isaac is starring as the film’s title antagonist. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Bryan Singer-directed X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse

I really like this poster. It's very simple and pretty easy to understand what this film is going to be about. I like how one side of the X has been burnt/destroyed showing a fracture amongst the X-Men with the other side clean as can be. I also like the tagline of "Only the strong will survive" really suggesting a lot of characters are going to die in this film and hopefully the trailer can give a little more insight tomorrow. This is a film I'm really looking forward to and I cannot wait for the trailer to drop.

On the heels of the quick tease, Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel! Watch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows trailer in the player below. Megan Fox and Will Arnett lead the cast for the film that also includes William Fichtner as Eric Sacks and newcomers Tyler Perry as scientist Baxter Stockman, WWE Star Sheamus as Rocksteady, Gary Anthony Williams as Bebop, Brittany Ishibashi as Karai, with Stephen Amell as the sports-themed vigilante Casey Jones and Brian Tee as Shredder. Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, and Noel Fisher will reprise their roles as Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo (Johnny Knoxville did the voice), and Michelangelo. The original film, directed by Jonathan Liebesman,  grossed more than $485 million at the worldwide box office. It also starred Danny Woodburn and Tony Shalhoub. It looks like part of the plan for Out of the Shadows involves including quite a few fan-favorite characters from throughout TMNT history. Created first as a comic book by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the turtles have been part of pop culture since their creation in 1987. In addition to a half dozen feature films, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo have been the focus of several different television series, both animated and live action. Way back at the press junket for the first film, Megan Fox told ComingSoon.net that she wanted to see Bebop and Rocksteady appear in the sequel. In the same interview, the franchise’s leading lady told us that there’s actually a Baxter Stockman cameo in the first film. With Tyler Perry stepping into the role for Out of the Shadows, it sounds like we’re going to be getting a much expanded look at the character. Directed by Earth to Echo‘s David Green, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is set for release on June 3, 2016.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this trailer. On one hand I like the fan service they did by adding Casey Jones, Baxter Stockman, Beebop and Rocksteady and actually showing all of them in action. On the other hand it just seemed like they threw a bunch of stuff together and said "here is this thing we call a trailer" I do like how they went down the more comedy route unlike the last film where they tried to be a little too serious about ninja fighting turtles. I'll have to see another trailer to really give how I feel about the film going into it next summer, but as of now I'm in the middle.

The Legend of Tarzan trailer has just debuted online! From David Yates (director of the last four Harry Potter films), the new take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ jungle hero stars Alexander Skarsgård (“True Blood,” Battleship) in the title role alongside a cast that also includes Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Djimon Hounsou. You can check out The Legend of Tarzan trailer for yourself below. The film begins years after the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash. Tarzan made his first appearance in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes. The jungle hero would go to be the focus of an additional 23 novels by the author. In the century since the character’s inception, Tarzan has been adapted into just about every medium, including dozens of different feature film iterations. Yates, meanwhile, has himself already returned to J.K. Rowling‘s Wizarding World. He’s currently directing the upcoming spinoff series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Look for that film just a few months after The Legend of Tarzan. The jungle adventure hits theaters July 1, 2016 with Beasts following on November 18, 2018.

I thought this was a pretty bad trailer. The trailer just seemed muddled and all over the place and they main thing were just random people looking up into the sky at something (presumably Tarzan), but they just looked so stupid doing it. I also didn't like the accent Margot Robbie had it just didn't seem authentic. The last 30 seconds of the trailer just seemed a little too cartoonish for my taste. I do like how they are doing the story and it'll be interesting to see how everything plays out because this cast is amazing as well as the director and I would hate for the film to be terrible with a lot of positive things going for it.

Last month, it was revealed that Matthew McConaughey was Sony Pictures and MRC’s top choice to play Randall Flag (The Man in Black) in their upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. Today, Deadline has an update, reporting that Idris Elba is the frontrunner to play Roland Deschain (The Gungslinger)! Director Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed the Academy Award-nominated A Royal Affair, is set to helm the big screen adaptation, which also has a tie-in television series in development simultaneously. Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have written the screenplay, which is said to be based primarily on the first book in the seven-volume series. Sony Pictures and MRC are teaming to make the live-action version of Stephen King’s epic tale, which focuses on the saga of the legendary Gunslinger. “I’m excited that ‘The Dark Tower’ is finally going to appear on the screen,” King previously said. “Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.” Ron Howard was initially planning to direct the first film in the series. He is now involved in producing the series through his Imagine Entertainment alongside Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins. Goldsman is also producing through Weed Road with Pinkner set to serve as executive producer. The Dark Tower is currently set for release on January 13, 2017.

I absolutely love this casting. Idris Elba is one of those actors who always brings it to every role and film he is in and I think he's going to do that for this film. I honestly don't know much about the character at all since I didn't read the book, but it does sound like a character that Idris Elba can really sink his teeth in. I think Elba and Matthew McConaughey will do great together on screen and it's a pairing that a lot of people are going to love. As I said I didn't read the book so I don't know a lot about the story, but I'm excited to see how everything turns out.
