10-7-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Last week, Robert Downey Jr. seemed to indicate that he might continue on as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future, despite the facts that his current contract only includes Avengers: Age of Ultron and the upcoming Avengers 3 and that he was quoted as saying one month ago today, "No, there’s no plan for a fourth 'Iron Man.'"

All that aside, Downey made an appearance on today's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" where he was once again asked about the possibility, and this time seemed to reveal it's in the cards. "I know there's going to be a bunch more Marvel movies," he said. "And they have big ideas of how to do it best and we're in the middle of negotiation..."  Ellen quickly prompted, "So, yes?" leading Downey to reply "Okay, yes!"

Downey also took part in a Reddit AMA this today where he offered this very cryptic teaser: "Sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered." Downey can next be seen as Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015.

This is really great news to hear. I'm a huge fan of the MCU and all of its films especially the Iron man films and I'm dying to see a 4th film. Now it isn't official until Marvel makes an announcement, but the person who would know the most about the 4th film would be Tony Stark/Iron Man. All we can do is play the wait and see game.

Announced for development in July, Boston Strong, Lionsgate's narrative account of the 2013 Boston Marathon has, according to Variety, found a lead in Boston native Casey Affleck. There's no confirmation of exactly who Affleck will be playing, but the film is specifically inspired by the true story of Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the tragedy who, despite losing both his legs that day, aided the manhunt that helped catch the perpetrators.

Bauman's book, "Stronger," (co-written with Bret Whitter), will serve as the primary source material for newcomer John Pollono's screenplay. That book, published earlier this year, is officially described as follows: Jeff Bauman woke up on Tuesday, April 16th 2013 and he had no legs. Just thirty hours prior, Jeff was surrounded by revelry at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. The first bomb went off at his feet as he awaited his girlfriend's finish. When Jeff awoke days later from hours of surgery, rather than take stock of his now completely altered life, Jeff ripped out his breathing tube and tried to speak. He couldn't. Jeff asked for a pad and paper and he wrote down seven words, "Saw the guy. Looked right at me," setting off one of the biggest manhunts in the country's history and beginning his own brave road to recovery. In his memoir, Jeff will inspire millions by writing about his experiences that early spring day and his ongoing mission to walk again. Jeff will show the terrorists that they accomplished nothing with their act of cowardice and prove to the entire world what Boston Strong really means.

This is amazing casting. Casey Affleck is often overshadowed by his older brother (Ben Affleck for those that didn't know), but I feel that Casey is the better actor and he is very underrated. I also want to say that who better to play a Boston native in a film about The Boston Marathon Tragedy than a Boston native who was deeply affected by this catastrophic event. The memoir sounds really interesting and I cannot wait to see it on the big screen.

Sony Pictures has plans to develop the characters of the Robin Hood legend into a multi-film shared cinematic universe, says a story today at The Hollywood Reporter. According to the outlet, the original pitch, titled Hood, will establish Robin alongside Merry Men like Will Scarlett and Little John, the plan being to potentially then give them solo spinoff films further down the road. Likened to Marvel's The Avengers in terms of scope with a story tone compared to the Mission: Impossible and The Fast and the Furious franchises, Hood arrives from the Lore pair of screenwriters Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott. Michael De Luca will oversee Hood for Sony.

This is really interesting news. First off do we really need a Robin Hood cinematic universe... no, but the studio thinks it could do well so why not. Now it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out and hopefully it can be successful becuase I'm a big fan of Robin Hood in general. But a thank you needs to be given to Marvel for giving the idea to every studio that a cinematic universe is the way to go when it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Although we learned last month that Matt Damon is planning on returning to the Bourne franchise alongside The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer Paul Greengrass, The Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner today assures CraveOnline that we haven't seen the last of his Aaron Cross. "It’s still moving," Renner says of the project, which has four-time Fast and Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin attached to direct. "We have our director, who’s actually run off to do the 'True Detective' series right now, and then, while that’s happening, they’re finishing writing the script. I know Greengrass and Damon… well, I've heard have maybe cracked an idea. A reason to continue the 'Bourne' series, which is fantastic. They have created a very exciting universe, and hopefully in my mind I'd love for us to do something together. If not on the next one, sometime very soon. I think that would be really great. I know I want it. I feel like the fans want it as well."

Assuming both projects stay on the schedule, it sounds like a potential Jason Bourne/Aaron Cross crossover film will happen a bit farther down the line, if at all. That shouldn't stop fans from having some fun speculating, however, and Renner is ready to do just that. "I think you pit them against each other," he says, explaining his basic pitch for a crossover film, "and then they go together against the bad guy. We realize that we're not the enemy. I mean, I think a thousand people can come up with that scenario, but I think you do both. I think that could be really interesting. Mind you, there have been NO talks, whatsoever, creatively about that. So that's just the fanboy in me, I suppose."

A fifth Bourne film is set to be released on July 16, 2016, but no official confirmation has been made as of yet in terms of who will be starring.

These are pretty great comments, but what is he suppose to say. First off I do believe that a crossover film will happen, but probably not until 2019 at the earliest. Now as for another Aaron Cross "Bourne film" I don't know when or if we'll ever see a film with him being the star again. I say that simply becuase other projects will come up and both Jeremy Renner and Justin Lin are in high demand (to star and direct respectively) and I don't know how much longer they'll wait for this project to get going.

The film set to hit theaters on October 31, Open Road Films has today debuted a new poster for writer/director Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmad and you can check out the poster below. Nightcrawler offers a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.

This is an amazing poster. It really does capture the true essence of what the film is about and it's actually pretty haunting. The film sounds and looks amazing and I'm really looking forward to the film and this may be the film that Jake Gyllenhaal could be nominated for an Oscar and put him over the hump.
