10-6-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Some things never change, and for Marvel's first family, The Fantastic Four, one of those things is their costumes, which remained mostly unchanged since their creation in 1961. Michael B. Jordan, who will take on the role of Johnny Storm in next year's reboot, has been very vocal about differences in the upcoming film from its source material and now he's got another thing to add to that list: the costumes.Speaking with ABC News, the actor teased the new look, which he referred to as "containment suits" as opposed to the expected "spandex." "It's a new look. We are all in containment suits," he said. "The costume process definitely took some time to get in and out of that thing, especially since I was bulking up. It was a little more snug during filming. We got through it man. It was a process, but we did it. It was hard work."

Jordan is joined by Jamie Bell, Kate Mara and Miles Teller who will play the titular team in the upcoming film. Toby Kebbell will also appear as Victor Von Doom along with Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. Directed by Josh Trank, The Fantastic Four is set for release on August 7, 2015.

This is pretty neat news. I'm really glad that they are changing up the costumes for the new movie. Now I don't mind the change, but I'd really like it if they kept some elements of the original costumes mixed in with the new costumes.

Since we're at least three years away from the release of an "Avengers 3," go ahead and take this one with a heaping grain of salt and remember it's all just rumors at this point. Ten days ago, a rumor popped up that Marvel's Avengers 3 was going to be so big it would have to be split into two films, ala The Hunger Games: Mockingjay or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Badass Digest, however, was quick to point out that this was impossible due to the very tight contracts Marvel has with its actors. Now, BAD is back with an interesting tidbit on this scenario which they say is closer to the truth than originally thought. The site reports that Avengers 3 won't be "split" into two movies so much as it will serve as a sort of springboard into something else, something bigger, and whatever that something else is could keep some of Marvel's biggest players out of Avengers 3.

As the site notes, Robert Downey Jr.'s new contract with Marvel stipulates his appearance in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3, so he'll be present for this third outing, but the likes of Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and The Hulk could all be benched for the third film while the studio waits to use them in this "something else."The site speculates that the scenario Marvel Studios could be planning is an Avengers 3 filled with Iron Man and other secondary characters, such as the new additions in Phase Three, followed by an "all-franchise crossover" that brings all the Marvel characters from the films and television together into one place. Avengers: Age of Ultron will debut in theaters May 1, 2015, while Avengers 3 is currently without a release date.

This is very interesting news. Now the notion of The Avengers 3 being split into two films is a dumb assumption being that there is no Avengers 3 script. But the studio could make it a two part movie without having to split anything. Now with this news it does make a little more sense, but I'm still not buying it simply because why would you take Iron Man away from Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye who he works well with. If they do this then the one idea nobody seems to be talking about is the fact that Tony Stark/Iron Man could appear in The Avengers 3 Part 1 and then be killed off as a cliffhanger leading into Part 2. All I know is that we'll have to wait and see.

The first character poster for Peter Jackson's Middle-earth finale, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, has been released today and you can check it out in the gallery viewer below for a look at Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins, brandishing his sword, Sting. The "Defining Chapter" hits theaters December 17. The film's massive cast includes Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Orlando Bloom, John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt and Aidan Turner. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies concludes the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins, who joins the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

This is a pretty great poster. You can see the fear in Bilbo's eyes as he is facing a threatening enemy. I'm a huge fan of The Lord of The Rings trilogy as well as the first two Hobbit films and I'm really looking forward to this film.

A third chapter in the dystopic thriller franchise is on the way today as Deadline confirms that The Purge: Anarchy helmer James DeMonaco will return for third entry in Blumhouse Productions, Platinum Dunes and Universal Pictures' The Purge series. Details for the plot of the third film have yet to be revealed, but it will once again return audiences to a world wherein, for one night out of the year, all crime --including murder -- is made legal. The Purge: Anarchy has grossed an estimated $108 million worldwide with the original turning in more than $89 million. Although the film hasn't officially been set for any release date as of yet, the franchise's marketing tagline of referring to the Purge as "an annual tradition," means that we're likely to see a third film in theaters sometime in 2015.

I'm really glad to hear this news. I really didn't like The Purge, but I did enjoy The Purge: Anarchy and I'm actually looking forward to the third film. It also makes sense for the film to be coming out in 2015 so that the studio can build off of the momentum it's gained so far and I hope they bring back some of the cast members that survived the previous film.

The Griswolds have slightly changed their Vacation plans. Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have moved the upcoming comedy reboot/sequel from November 13, 2015 to October 9, 2015. Starring Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Day, Skyler Gisondo, Steele Stebbins, Keegan-Michael Key, Regina Hall, Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, the Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley film will offer a new version of the vacation adventures of the quirky dad and his family. The movie will follow an adult Rusty Griswold (Helms), who now has his own family misadventures on the road.  The new date has Vacation opening opposite Kidnap, the Luis Prieto thriller that stars Halle Berry, and Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book.

I'm kind of indifferent about the news. On one hand it's a great move simply because it shows that production is ahead of schedule and the film will be hear earlier. On the other hand it's going to be facing tough competition, but it would counter-programming for that weekend. It was also in a good spot on its original date with it only going against another Friday the 13th reboot. Like I've said before I'm curious to see how the film turns out and hopefully it meets my expectations.
