Weekend Movie News 6-5-15 to 6-7-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

DreamWorks Pictures and Fox 2000 Pictures have debuted the trailer for Bridge of Spies, the upcoming dramatic thriller directed by three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia). You can watch the trailer below. Set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015. Bridge of Spies also stars three-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, a KGB agent defended by Donovan; Scott Shepherd as CIA operative Hoffman; Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan as James’ wife, Mary; Sebastian Koch as East German lawyer Vogel; and Academy Award nominee Alan Alda as Thomas Watters, a partner at Donovan’s law firm. Fox 2000 Pictures co-financed Bridge of Spies with DreamWorks in association with Participant Media, and will distribute internationally. Disney will handle domestic distribution. In addition to directing, Spielberg is producing the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger, with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Matt Charman and three-time Academy Award winners Ethan Coen & Joel Coen.

This was a great trailer. It was intense and it looks like this film will be keeping all of us on the edge of our seats throughout the entire film. Look putting this group together of Spielberg, Hanks and the Coen Brothers just screams Oscar contender and I look for it to be one when that time comes. I expect this film to be amazing and I personally think it will be amazing.

Roadside Attractions has today debuted the trailer for their upcoming post-apocalyptic tale Z for Zachariah, starring Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Children of Men) and Chris Pine (Star Trek, Into the Woods). Check it out below. Directed by Craig Zobel (Compliance) and written by Nissar Modi (Breaking at the Edge), Z for Zachariah takes place in the wake of a nuclear war, following a young woman (Robbie), who survives on her own. Fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, she then discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being (Ejiofor). A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger (Pine) enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel. Z for Zachariah is set for a limited theatrical release August 21.

This was an amazing trailer. From the looks of the trailer, this isn't going to be your typical post-apocalyptic film. Margot Robbie has completely transformed herself and this will be a breakout role for her. I also think that she'll play really well off of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine and I cannot wait to check out this film.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate is taking the express route to Sherwood Forest by hiring hot TV helmer Otto Bathurst (“Peaky Blinders,” “Black Mirror,” “Hustle”) to direct their latest franchise hopeful, Robin Hood: Origins. Described as an origin story in the vein of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, this new take on the folk hero find’s Robin Hood returning from The Crusades to discover a Sherwood Forest rife with corruption and evil. Teaming with a band of outlaws, he takes matters into his own hands to set things right, with very little merry-making along the way. The gritty script for Robin Hood: Origins hails from Joby Harold, who recently penned Guy Ritchie’s revisionist take on Camelot titled Knights of the Roundtable. The film will be produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson along with Harold and Tory Tunnell’s Safe House Prods. Lionsgate has good reason to put this project on the fast track, as Disney has their own Pirates of the Caribbean-esque take on the legend titled Nottingham & Hood, Sony is developing an entire Robin Hood shared universe and Warner Bros. has their long-gestating futuristic urban version titled Hood, which has circled the likes of The Wachowskis and Will Smith.

This is a great choice for the film. Now granted he hasn't done anything gritty just yet in his career, but everyone has to start somewhere. Robin Hood has such a rich and lavish history and there are so many stories you can tell with his character. As the article says a lot of studios are cashing in on the character so it looks as if we are going to get at least 4 Robin Hood movies in the next few years.

Though the film was recently delayed eight months, pre-production continues on Lionsgate’s reboot of the TV series “Power Rangers” which has Project Almanac‘s Dean Israelite set to direct. IGN recently caught up with Israelite and asked him about the project, the script for which he had high praise. “I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way. It had this wonderful character that’s essential to going on a fantastic adventure. I was instantly drawn to it. I remember it as a kid. I grew up with it in South Africa. When I opened the script I had no idea how it was going to be updated, and I was really impressed by it. So I put a really big presentation together, because I needed to win the job. There were a lot of guys going out for it and saw the potential in it, so I put a really big presentation together and was lucky enough to get the job. We’re in sort of a soft pre-production right now, doing a lot of design work and reimagining the world. It’s really cool and exciting.” Israelite also revealed they’re in the beginnings of casting for the film and with shooting set to begin soon, we can begin to expect announcements coming up “in the next few months.”

Screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) wrote the screenplay for Power Rangers, which is described as a modern reinvention of the long-running franchise. In it, a group of ordinary high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. Original creator Haim Saban is acting as producer along with Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur. Saban’s “Power Rangers” franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” hit series that launched in 1993. Following its introduction, “Power Rangers” quickly became the most-watched children’s television program in the United States and remains one of the top-rated and longest running boys live-action series in television history. The series follows the adventures of a group of ordinary teens who “morph” into superheroes and save the world from evil. It is seen in more than 150 markets around the world, translated into numerous languages and is a mainstay in the most prominent international children’s programming blocks.  20th Century Fox previously released two feature films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie in 1997. Power Rangers is set for release on January 13, 2017.

This is great news to hear. When I was younger I was a huge fan of the Power Rangers and I have been dying to see a reboot of the franchise onto the big screen. The previous two films weren't the greatest in the world, but I loved them as a kid. After seeing the short film based on the power rangers was released (if you haven't seen in then you need to check it out on YouTube the link is here) and to hear that while it'll stay playful, but be mature is a great thing to hear and with that hopefully the film will get taken seriously.

Two more names have been added to Paramount Pictures’ planned Transformers writers room as Deadline reports that Black Hawk Down scribe Ken Nolan will join “Black List” screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet in the studio’s new approach to the franchise. The room, which is set to begin work on Monday, is designed to serve as a franchise braintrust and has Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, A Beautiful Mind) leading the charge and a roster that also includes “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman, the Iron Man writing pair of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, “Fringe” and “Lost” scribe Jeff Pinkner, X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk‘s Zak Penn, Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari, who did production re-writes on Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man, repeat “Black List” scribe Christina Hodson, and Lindsey Beer, a science major at Stanford, who has written original specs in the sci-fi and fantasy genre. “We’ve got a work space that is beautifully production designed to be immersive with a strong sense of the franchise history,” Goldsman tells Deadline. “We will look at the toys, the TV shows, the merchandise, everything that has been generated by Hasbro, from popular to forgotten iterations, and establish a mythological time line. It has been designed with a lot of visual help, toys, robots, sketches and writers and artists. After that super saturation, the writers will figure out not one, but numerous films that will extend the universe… If one of the writers discovers an affinity for ‘Beast Wars,’ they can drive forward on treatments that will have been fleshed out by the whole room.” A potential Beast Wars film isn’t the only title that has been name-dropped recently. Last week, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner hinted that a spinoff film following Bumblebee may be in the cards. It has also been reported that another possible feature is Transformers One, a prequel film set on the planet Cybertron, briefly seen in the first film of the series. “The whole process of the story room was really delightful,” Goldsman continues, “and we are seeing it more in movies as this moves toward serialized storytelling. There are good rooms around town, including the Monsters Room at Universal, the Star Wars room, and of course, at Marvel. We’re trying to beg, borrow and steal from the best of them, and gathered a group of folks interested in developing and broadening this franchise.” Age of Extinction grossed over $1 billion at the global box office with all four films combined grossing over $3.7 billion.

These are two great names to add to a writing team. These guys know how to write good material and I think they can bring a lot of great ideas to a Transformers film. One of the films mentioned is a possible Beast Wars film and I would go absolutely insane for a Beast Wars film and with this team of writers anything is possible. I think Paramount is doing the right thing by getting all of these talented writers and I cannot wait to see what they come up with.
