6-29-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It’s official! Star Trek Beyond is, as previously rumored, the official title of the next big screen adventure of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701! Director Justin Lin confirmed the title today. The new film, now in production, will feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with Idris Elba as the film’s villain and Sofia Boutella in a mystery role. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Lin, four-time The Fast and the Furious director, is set to direct from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Paramount Pictures has Star Trek Beyond scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release, which happens to be exactly two months to the day before the franchise’s 50th Anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap,” in which the crew of the Enterprise encounters a deadly shapeshifting salt vampire, introduced the world to “Star Trek” on September 8, 1966.

I think this is a great title. Now this title has been rumored for a long time, but I'm glad that it is officially confirmed. I think it really fits as a title for the franchise simply because it has a plethora of meaning such as beyond the stars or to travel to the beyond/unknown where no man has gone before. I've the rebooted films in the franchise so far and I think with Justin Lin at the helm this film will be the best one yet.

After quite a bit of fan speculation, writer and director James Gunn officially revealed the title of his much-anticipated follow-up to last year’s Marvel Studios cosmic adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. The May 5, 2017 will be called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.  “Yes, the official title of the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Gunn just posted to his official Facebook page. “Kevin Feige recently let the title slip while doing Ant-Man press, which I’m really happy about because God knows I’ve let more than one thing slip accidentally while chattering away on this FB page. Also, hats off to some intrepid fans who figured out the title a couple of days after I posted the cover page. More than one person guessed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ – I wanted so badly to give you props at the time, but knew I had to wait.” Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will once again feature Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper as unlikely heroes who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. “For Kevin to mess up,” Gunn also jokes at the end of his announcement. “Haha.” Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be one of three Marvel Studios films getting released in 2017. It will be followed by a new Spider-Man film on July 28 (starring Tom Holland and directed by Jon Watts) and Thor: Ragnarok on November 3.

This is a really smart, clever and great titles. Of course it is a play on the soundtrack from the first film Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and it's nice to see Marvel using that to their advantage. This film can go in a lot of different ways and I'm curious to see how Marvel will build off of the success that the first film unexpectedly was. I love the tile and the first film and I can't wait for the sequel.

While Black Panther’s world of Wakanda as well as his enemy Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) were introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Birth.Movies.Death. talked to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about how T’Challa himself, as played by Chadwick Boseman, will emerge onscreen in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. “It is a role that he is still in the beginning phases of taking on, it’s a mantle he is only beginning to take on because his father is older,” says Feige of the transfer of the traditional Black Panther role from T’Challa’s father T’Chaka. “The reason we introduced him in ‘Civil War’ is because we needed a third party. We needed fresh eyes who wasn’t embedded with the Avengers and who has a very different point of view than either Tony or Steve. We said, ‘We need somebody like Black Panther… why don’t we just use Black Panther?’ That’s how it went in the development process.” Although technologically far advanced, Wakandans have up until this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe kept to themselves, and they have also kept their most prized resource vibranium out of reach until a certain homicidal cyborg named Ultron took things into his own hands. Turns out, the Earth-shattering events in Sokovia during the Age of Ultron finale will play a pivotal role in Black Panther taking his place on the world stage. Feige adds: “Today, pre-‘Civil War,’ post-‘Ultron’ I think he and his father are saying, ‘A bunch of vibranium just got out of here and wreaked a lot of havoc. Maybe we can’t stay behind these borders anymore, maybe we have to stick our heads out and make at least an attempt to be a part of the rest of the world right now, while at the same time protecting our people.’ That’s sort of where we meet him in ‘Civil War.'” Captain America: Civil War will open in theaters on May 6, 2016 while the Black Panther solo film is set to bow on July 6, 2018.

I love these comments. First off I want ot give kudos to Kevin Feige for being the genius he is and having the ability to plan out these films over such a long period of time. It's also funny now after The Avengers: Age of Ultron, that there are a lot of things that while I did recognize, they didn't connect with me at the moment they were introduced in the film. I think this is a really great starting point for the character and it will also not show an origin story and I think that it good for the character becasue you won't have to waste any time on that. He'll get a small origin story in his solo film, but at the point we've already been introduced to the character that we don't need an origin story.

Though Marvel Studios is set to deliver their second film of the year in just a few weeks with Ant-Man, fans’ eyes are eagerly pointed toward their upcoming plans for Spider-Man. We spoke with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige this weekend about the upcoming film, but in his interview with Birth.Movies.Death, Feige mentioned a unique influence for the planned reboot: John Hughes. “It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige said. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.” Feige also went on to mention that Spider-Man’s “deep bench of rogues” is an advantage for them moving forward, saying currently they’re interested in using villains that fans haven’t seen before on the big screen. Tom Holland (The Impossible, In the Heart of the Sea) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in their next Spider-Man film, which will be directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car). The film is set to hit theaters on July 28. 2017.

I'm a little indifferent about these comments. On one hand I love the idea of using different villains that we haven't seen on the big screen yet such as Vulture, Kraven, Mysterio, Carnage, Hobgoblin or a better version of Venom, Rhino (also a longer version) and Electro. On the other hand making superhero in vain of John Hughes just doesn't sound right. I'm a huge John Hughes fan and Feige is right when he says only John Hughes can make a John Hughes film so I don't think anyone else can do it. No offense to Jon Watts, but this will be a tough task. I just want a really good Spider-Man film (which we haven't had since 2005 with Spider-Man 2) and I hope that this film can do the trick.

When it was first established in 1993, the DC Comics imprint Vertigo was created to showcase more adult-oriented titles featuring violence, sexuality and other themes that could not be presented as overtly in the family-friendly DC books. Now Deadline is reporting that a similar differentiation is going on within the DC movieverse as well, with all Vertigo titles now falling under the auspices of New Line Cinema. This means that superhero stories associated with DC proper (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Justice league, etc) will remain at Warner Bros. while New Line’s chief executive Toby Emmerich and production president Richard Brener will oversee Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” series. This will hopefully give Gordon-Levitt the freedom to make a Sandman movie in keeping with the more mature subject matter the classic comics series dealt with and not cohere to a formula superhero pattern, similar to how the Marvel Knights label was formed for R-rated fare like Punisher: War Zone. “Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing sh-t up,” Gordon-Levitt stated earlier this month. “[Sandman] has nothing to do with that and it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said ‘Don’t have him punch anybody.’ Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does. It’s going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary cliches. So, that’s why it’s taking a lot time to write, but it’s going to be really good.”

I really love hearing this news. It goes along with the rumor that the DCCU films will be made by Warner Bros. and other films not in the universe will be made by New Line. It's also a great business decision because you are able to make more mature films and you don't have to worry about connecting them to any story in the DCCU unless you absolutely want to. I think this is something that is ahead of the game because Marvel hasn't does this other than making R rated tv shows for Netflix. If they did this then we could see a Daredevil, Punisher, Blade or Ghost Rider film that will be gritty and mature. Sandman is a film I've been looking forward to for a long time and I can't wait to see it.
