6-22-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they purchased not only Star Wars but the whole lot, including Willow, Radioland Murders and that little franchise known as Indiana Jones. As the 72-year-old Harrison Ford looks less and less likely to step back into his most iconic role, rumors have swirled that Chris Pratt might become the first actor to re-interpret the lead role in features, and now AintItCool is reporting scuttlebutt they’ve heard about Lucasfilm pencilling in a release window for Indiana Jones 5 in the fourth quarter of 2018. Despite the site’s “trusted sources,” even they recommend taking the word with a grain of salt, and even if it is true it may only be internal wishful thinking, especially given the already ambitious slate of Star Wars films and TV shows the company is launching over the next several years. In a May interview with Lucasfilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy, she stressed that a new Indiana Jones adventure “will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.”

This slightly contradicts what her husband and producer on all four previous Indy films, Frank Marshall, told SlashFilm recently,  “No, there’ve been no discussions on that,” Marshall said. “We’ve had no discussions on ‘Indy 5′ to date.”  And then there are the statements that George Lucas has made in the past to multiple outlets that he is trying to crack a story, or that he had cracked a story, or rumors that the McGuffin was the Bermuda Triangle (a hot property in Hollywood right now). Lucas has stated that despite being retired from blockbusters, he might still be open to shepherding another Jones film to the screen. Given the fact that Disney and J.J. Abrams reportedly threw out many of his concepts for the new Star Wars trilogy, the maverick billionaire may be disenchanted by the idea of working within the strictures of the Mouse House.  As for the Chris Pratt rumors, it’s important to remember that not too long ago many sites were reporting Bradley Cooper as “a lock” to take over the whip and fedora from Harrison Ford. Pratt is the new box office king thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, but as he told the Nerdist Podcast recently, he’s only had one conversation about becoming archaeologist Indiana Jones. “I actually got a call today from my brother and he said it’d be cool if I did it, so I have my brother’s permission,” Pratt said jokingly. “That’s the first of many steps, none of the other steps have happened. (laughs)”

This is a pretty interesting news. I firmly believe Kathleen Kennedy when she says that an Indiana Jones film will eventually be made by Disney, but not right now. So far Kennedy has done an amazing job at keeping things under wraps and making high quality products. I think that Lucasfilm is so involved with Star Wars right now, that they haven't had time to think of Indiana Jones. I think one will be made, but we probably won't get it until 2019 or 2020 at the earliest.

Following news from director Christopher McQuarrie this past Friday that they have officially picture locked the sequel, Paramount Pictures has now brought online a new Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation trailer, which you can watch below. In Rogue Nation, Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate, an International rogue organization, as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher), the new Mission: Impossible movie stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner (Marvel’s The Avengers, Kill the Messenger), Alec Baldwin (The Departed, “30 Rock”), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World’s End), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead), Simon McBurney (The Last King of Scotland, The Theory of Everything) and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, The Red Tent) and features a screenplay by Will Staples and Drew Pearce. A Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot production, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation will hit 2D and IMAX theaters July 31.

This was an action-packed and awesome trailer. It gave us a little better portrayal of the films plot and showed us a couple new scenes. I still can't believe that that is Tom Cruise hanging off of the side of the airplane. Doing those types of stunts are what make the movie feel real and as an audience member you are put on the edge of your seat waiting ti see what happens. I love the franchise and this could be the best entry yet.

Despite many a rumor that another solo Hulk film would be coming down the pipeline in a few years, the jolly green gamma monster has been contained to appearances in the “Avengers” films along with a brief cameo in Iron Man 3. It has previously been reported that previous contracts with Universal have hindered Marvel Studios in developing another solo Hulk movie, but in a new report on Forbes, the true details have finally surfaced. The outlet writes that Universal no longer holds the production rights for the character, but instead still controls distribution rights on a solo Hulk movie. Should Marvel wish to make a movie about the character, then Universal Studios would be given the option of ‘First Refusal,’ wherein Disney would gain the rights to distribute the film if Universal decided they did not want to. As Forbes points out, however, there are a number of factors that lead into why Marvel wouldn’t want to make another solo Hulk movie that have nothing to do with being cooperative with another studio; namely, the cost of budgeting production and marketing for such a film coupled with the poor box office receipts of the previous films, plus he seems to work better as a commodity found only in “Avengers” movies. Marvel has proven with their Spider-Man deal that they’re willing and able to co-operate in order to tell the stories they want to, provided it is beneficial on their end. Even though there has been a consistent denial on the matter, rumors and desires for a Planet Hulk movie won’t go away. Perhaps now, like Banner himself, they’ll find peace. What would you like to see in a solo Hulk film or would you prefer he stayed contained in The Avengers movies?

This actually makes a lot of sense. This is the same type of deal that Marvel has with Sony when it pertains to Spider-Man. It also makes sense for Marvel not to make a new Hulk film because the past two films honestly haven't been that great and they haven't made the right amount of money for any studio to put faith into a solo Hulk film. I would love to see a solo Hulk with Mark Ruffalo, but I don't think it will happen and to me Hulk is more of a supporting character in the MCU than a having his own film. The only reason why they made a solo Hulk film in the first place back in 2008 was so that they could reestablish the character after the god-awful 2003 Hulk film directed by Ang Lee. S in the end Marvel has no reason to make a solo Hulk film.

Unlike a lot of other actors playing a role in a comic book movie, who will get a condensed info packet from production with a few comic book pages in it so they can pretend to be an expert to appease fans, Jesse Eisenberg is honest: He doesn’t know from comic books. The actor doesn’t (and shouldn’t) see that as a handicap, and he has gone on record to MTV about the nature of fan expectations around his portrayal of Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  “The expectations that I have are never the same expectations that an audience has,” Eisenberg said. “I don’t have expectations for myself to adhere to a comic book character, but a lot of people are interested in how I would coincide with the comic book character. But it couldn’t be farther from my mind, because I’m just playing a role… It’s a really great character that’s written by this guy, Chris Terrio, he’s a phenomenal writer… He loves my character in the same way I love my character. He put a lot of work into it. It’s a great character, there’s an emotional core to the character. It’s not this silly, villainous character. This is a real depiction of a person who thinks these things. So the challenge is to make it seem real.” As Eisenberg’s Luthor says in the trailer, “We know better now, don’t we? Devils don’t come from hell beneath us, no, they come from the sky.” That indicates the level of acrimony he has for Superman, which is understandable considering the mess the hero made in Man of Steel. We also know that this Luthor will be the post-John Byrne era white collar criminal one (not the sewer-dwelling Gene Hackman version) based on all those LexCorp Easter eggs in that previous film, and that he’ll be bald. Any further word on this new interpretation and the stakes involved will have to wait for the panel at San Diego Comic-Con International.

“No, that’s an entirely different thing,” Eisenberg says of Hackman’s portrayal of Luther from the 1978 Richard Donner film. “Also the tone of that movie is so different, that movie wouldn’t be made that way now. The way we expect movies to be now, which is for the best probably, we expect there to be some kind of psychological accuracy. That the person is coming from a place that’s probably diagnosable in some ways. This is not [a winking, knowing movie], this is a real depiction of a person who thinks these things.” In January, the actor stated that he relished playing the character and would like to reprise it, saying “I would love to. It’s a great group and director, and the most ideal character to play.” With rumors that he’ll crop up in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad likely to be confirmed sooner than later, it’s a good bet that no matter what Eisenberg’s doing with the iconic arch villain he’s here to stay.  Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Jena Malone, Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

I really love these comments. I'm glad Jesse Eisenberg was honest in saying that he didn't read about the character in comic books because he honestly doesn't have to. The thing about it is, we as fans put so many high expectations on comic book film that we often get disappointed because the characters and film didn't meet our expectations. If we just sit back and enjoy a movie for what it is then more people can have a good time watching them. I also like the fact that this version of Lex Luthor will be more serious than previous incarnations. Not to bash Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey for their portrayals, but they were the same type of silly villain that we see in a lot of movies. It's time that we actually saw a more serious take on the character.

Production is getting ready to move forward on a new, currently untitled Jason Bourne film that will feature the return of Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon to the title role with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer Paul Greengrass back in the director’s chair. Now, it seems that another familiar franchise character will also be back. Deadline is reporting that Julia Stiles is set to reprise her role as CIA Agent Nicky Parsons. Stiles played the part in the first three films in the franchise, but she did not return for the Jeremy Renner-led The Bourne Legacy. Little is known about the plot of the new film, although it has been confirmed that it will not feature a crossover between Damon’s Bourne and Renner’s Aaron Cross. Stiles, nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Lumen Ann Pierce on Showtime’s “Dexter,” recently played a supporting role in David O. Russel’s acclaimed drama, Silver Linings Playbook. Frank Marshall will again produce the new film alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment. Greengrass, Damon and Greg Goodman also produce. Production should begin shortly on Bourne 5 as the film is slated to hit the big screen July 29, 2016.

This is great news to hear. Julia Stiles is a really talented actress and her character really stood out in the previous Bourne films. I think bringing her back shows that Paul Greengrass wants to bring the franchise back to what is was before Bourne Legacy and bringing previous cast members back is a great start.
