1-8-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following his critically-acclaimed performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, Michael Keaton appears to be planning a trip to a mysterious island off the coast of Sumatra. Deadline brings word that Keaton is in talks to join the cast of Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island, set to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla). Keaton would join the already-announced Tom Hiddleston (Marvel’s The Avengers, Only Lovers Left Alive) and J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Whiplash). Set for release on March 10, 2017, Kong: Skull Island aims to fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline. Keaton, who also starred last year in RoboCop and Need for Speed, will next headline Thomas McCarthy’s Spotlight and lend his voice to the DreamWorks Animation spinoff feature Minions. Thomas Tull (Godzilla, The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Warcraft) will produce and Alex Garcia (Godzilla) will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures.

If this casting becomes true then it is great casting. Michael Keaton is now in a resurgence of his career and its all because of his fantastic work in Birdman (for which I think he'll not only get nominated of Best Actor  at The Oscars, but he will win the Oscar). This film is already assembling a great cast and I'm really curious to see what role he'll be playing and I'm really looking forward to this film.

The long yellow brick road to Broadway musical Wicked finding its way to the silver screen has just gotten one step closer as producer Marc Platt (Into the Woods) told Film Divider that the movie is eyeing a 2016 release. Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (The Hours) will direct. The site previously-reported that Vue Cinemas’ CEO Tim Richards mentioned the film as a highlight of the 2016 release calendar, and Daldry’s name has been in the mix since 2012, but Platt responded with a resounding “yes” to the rumor, adding that, “it’s not set in stone. The process of developing that movie has begun, we’re working on it, and whether it makes 2016 or not, I’m not so sure.” “2016 is the goal, but I don’t know whether we’ll make that goal or not,” Platt continued. “We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high. We’re going to scrutinise our work on the screenplay and our prep on the movie, and when we feel like it’s ready, okay. We’re not going to shoot a release date is what I’m saying. It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush. It took 27 years to make ‘Into the Woods’ into a film from its original stage production, and 30 years with ‘Les Mis.’ Some things take time for a reason.” Platt also confirmed that Winnie Holzman, best known for writing the book for Stephen Schwartz’s musical, is in the process of fashioning her work into a screenplay for the Wicked movie. Prior to becoming a globally touring smash as well as one of the longest-running shows on Broadway, Platt was originally developing Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” for the big screen until Universal Pictures decided to take it to The Great White Way first in 2003. An alternate retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wizard of Oz,” Wicked follows two opposing witches–Elphaba and Glinda the Good– from their first meeting in college to Elphaba’s ultimate downfall and transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West.

If this comes true then this is great news. I've the stage show of Wicked before and I was completely blown away by it and I've always wondered what it would look like on the big screen and now I may be getting that chance. I think besides the original Wizard of Oz that this is the best part of the overall story. I think 2016 is a great year to release it and I'm really curious to see who gets cast in the film.

The next chapter in Blumhouse Productions, Platinum Dunes and Universal Pictures’ dystopic thriller franchise has a release date! The Purge 3 is officially set to hit theaters on Friday, July 1, 2016. Although it’s light on plot specifics, the following official description has also been released: Expanding upon the explosive universe introduced in the sleeper hits that have earned $200 million at the worldwide box office, Universal Pictures’ The Purge 3 reveals the next terrifying chapter of 12 hours of anarchy that is sanctioned annually by the New Founders of America. The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy helmer James DeMonaco is set to return for the third entry, which will open opposite Warner Bros. Pictures’ David Yates helmed Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation, Tarzan, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, Christoph Waltz, Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie,  and the Steven Spielberg directed take on Roald Dahl’s The BFG, starring Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill.

I really like this release date. Both the films in the franchise have taken the summer by storm with the first film being a massive hit. I honestly didn't like the first film, but I was really surprised by the second film that came out just last year. It's going to have a some good competition that weekend, but I have no doubt it is going to do well at the box office.

I really like these photos. A lot of these things we saw in the trailer that came out on Tuesday, but a couple are new and I really like them. All of the photos give us a more i-depth look at the film and it's really nice to see these photos. As I've been saying I'm looking forward to this film eventhough it has went through a lot of problems.

Deadline brings word that Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon is set to play the female lead in the upcoming satirical sci-fi film Downsizing, reuniting the star with Election helmer Alexander Payne. Downsizing, already set to star Matt Damon, tells the high concept story of a man (Damon) and his wife (Witherspoon) who, deciding that their lives have gotten out of hand, decide to voluntarily have themselves shrunk down. Unfortunately for the man, his wife backs out at the last minute. Witherspoon, who is in theaters now in both Jean-Marc Vallée’s Wild and in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, actually joined an earlier attempt at Downsizing back in 2009 when Paul Giamatti was attached to play the lead. Although only 5’1″ in real life, Witherspoon has some acting experience being larger than life: she voiced the 49 1/2 foot tall Ginormica in DreamWorks Animation’s 2009 animated family adventure Monsters vs. Aliens. Payne, who most recently directed Nebraska, scripted Downsizing with Jim Taylor, with whom he also wrote Sideways and About Schmidt. Plans call for production to begin on Downsizing following Damon’s soon-to-shoot return to the Bourne franchise. Sacha Baron Cohen (Hugo, The Dictator) was also previously cast for a dual role back in 2009. Whether or not the plan is still to have him appear remains to be seen, but check back for details as soon as they become available.

This is great casting Reese Witherspoon is an Academy Award winning actress and I think any movie you put her in is going to be good as evident by the two films (The Good Lie and Wild) that she put out this year. The film has a really interesting concept and I'm really curious to see Alexander Payne direct a sci-fi film of sorts.
