1-15-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

TheWrap brings word today that not only has actor Tom Hardy had to drop out out of Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie due to scheduling conflicts, but that David Ayer is eyeing his End of Watch star Jake Gyllenhaal to replace him in the role of Rick Flagg. This would have marked Hardy’s second appearance on the big screen as a DC Comics character, having previously played Bane in 2012′s The Dark Knight Rises. He can next be seen in theaters in Child 44 on April 17 and Mad Max: Fury Road on May 15. Gyllenhaal has previously been courted for other comic book roles including Doctor Strange and The Green Hornet when director Kevin Smith was attached to the project. Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad will star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film is set to hit theaters on August 5, 2016.

This is really interesting news. I was really looking forward for seeing Tom Hardy in this role and to see him to work with David Ayer, but I can understand why Tom Hardy is leaving the film. As for Jake Gyllenhaal replacing him I'm all for it. Gyllenhaal is a very talented actor and he has a great relationship with David Ayer so it makes sense for him to appear in this film.

Following his nomination this morning Best Supporting Actor in Whiplash, J.K. Simmons spoke briefly with MTV, revealing a major surprise concerning his role in the upcoming Kong: Skull Island. He says that the film will take place in Detroit in 1971! (That is, of course, in addition to its setting on an fiction island off the coast of Sumatra). What’s more, the production is planning to take place in Detroit. “When it first came to my attention, ‘There’s interest in you for a new ‘King Kong,’ I thought, ‘Okay… Why?’” Simmons explains, “But then I met with Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who’s going to be directing it and John Gatins, who’s writing and Tom [Hiddleston]. Jordan was just so passionate and so smart. It’s such an intersting, new take on it. It’s set in Detroit in 1971, which is where I grew up. We’re going to shoot it in Detroit during baseball season, so I’ll be able to go to Tigers games! There’s a lot to like about this movie!” In addition to Simmons and Hiddleston, it was recently revealed that Michael Keaton (who himself was nominated today for his leading role in Birdman) is being sought for a role. His casting doesn’t appear to be 100% confirmed quite yet as it remains to be seen how the Kong: Skull Island shooting schedule will stack up against yesterday’s news that Keaton will headline John Lee Hancock’s McDonalds “origin story,” The Founder. Set for release on March 10, 2017, Kong: Skull Island aims to fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline. Thomas Tull (Godzilla, The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Warcraft) will produce and Alex Garcia (Godzilla) will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures.

This is really interesting. Detroit is a very interesting choice for a location for this film. Now granted it will also have island shots, but as for an american city I wish they would've went to New York (as in previous Kong films) or a San Francisco or Los Angeles are great places, but it will be interesting to see how Detroit plays into the story.

Following the teases earlier today from screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have arrived with additional quotes about Captain America: Civil War. Speaking at a press event in Beijing with Sina.com (via CBM), the pair revealed that Scarlett Johansson will in fact return as Black Widow for Captain America: Civil War. “We’ve been preparing for the movie since the one debuted last year,” Anthony said. “So, we’ve been working on it for a long time now. We’re very happy how it’s coming along. Captain America 3 is gonna be called Captain America: Civil War and it’s going to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson will be back, Winter Soldier will be back, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will also be joining us in the next film.” Johansson’s inclusion in the film adds yet another high profile member of the MCU to the cast that is also set to include Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Chadwick Boseman in his MCU debut as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl in a mystery role, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, and potentially Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.

This is great news to hear. This solo franchise is perfect for Scarlett Johansson and the Black Widow character. She did an amazing job in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and once we see more of Black Widow's story in The Avengers: Age of Ultron that she will play an crucial part in Captain America: Civil War.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new trailer for their upcoming comedy Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart and you can check it out below. When millionaire hedge fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is nailed for fraud and bound for a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him 30 days to get his affairs in order. Desperate, he turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart) to prep him for a life behind bars. But despite James’ one-percenter assumptions, Darnell is a hard-working small business owner who has never received a parking ticket, let alone been to prison. Together, the two men do whatever it takes for James to “get hard” and, in the process, discover how wrong they were about a lot of things – including each other. Directed by Etan Cohen and co-starring Alison Brie, Edwina Findley and Craig T. Nelson, Get Hard hits theaters on March 27, 2015.

This was an ok trailer. It showed a few new scenes, but a lot of  it was repeated from the first trailer. One problem that I had with it is that I didn't really laugh except for a couple of times. These two are the funniest people in Hollywood and I feel that this film might be a cash-grab just because of who these two are, but I'm hoping that the film is really great and funny.

Apparently the mildly-anticipated action sequel Beverly Hills Cop 4 is not as far along as many would like, at least according to Axel Foley himself, Eddie Murphy, who talked to Rolling Stone about the potential project while promoting his new reggae single “Oh Jah Jah.” “Nah, they still trying to get that script right,” Murphy said of the fourquel. “I’m not doing a ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ unless they have a really incredible script. I’ve read a couple things that look like they can make some paper. But I’m not doing a sh*tty movie just to make some paper. The sh*t got to be right.” Right or not, Paramount’s plans seem a lot firmer than Murphy’s, as MLive reports Michigan Film Office spokeswoman Michelle Grinnell’s insistence that, to paraphrase Glenn Frey, the heat is STILL on. “Paramount’s plans for this project in Michigan have not changed,” Grinnell wrote, reiterating her previous statement a month ago that Beverly Hills Cop 4 was, “still looking like this spring for principal (filming/production).” Production was expected to take place primarily in Detroit last fall for a March 25, 2016 release, until unspecified delays occurred, possibly due to the script work Murphy refers to. Brett Ratner is still attached as director, with Jerry Bruckheimer returning as producer after sitting out the third film. Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) wrote the current draft of the screenplay. Having a good script is a valid point, especially after the disastrous reception of 1994′s Beverly Hills Cop III, which Murphy admitted on a 2006 episode of “Inside the Actor’s Studio” was “atrocious” and responsible for the two-decade banishment of the character. In May of 2013, CBS passed on a pilot for a “Beverly Hills Cop” TV show featuring Murphy as now-Chief of Police Axel Foley and starring Brandon T. Jackson as his son, but it spurred interest in a fourth film.

This is pretty shocking. The film for a long time has had a release date for 2016 and by the looks of it we won't get the film by then. I wasn't too excited about a Beverly Hills Cop 4 and hearing this makes me even more skeptical about the film.
