1-5-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

One month ago, Marvel Studios confirmed the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange and though the film won’t hit theaters until November 2016, the actor is already preparing for his appearance as the Sorcerer Supreme. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Cumberbatch was asked if taking on this part was a risk, to which he replied: “I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing. I’ve got a few things to get under my belt first.” When asked if he would be heading out to the Himalayas to film for the movie, a place Cumberbatch is no stranger to in reality, the actor said: “Ahh … you’ll have to wait and see. I’m not going to be eked out on any spoilers or reveals now. It’s quite a way off but I’m very excited about that spiritual dimension, obviously. It’s something that’s been a huge part of my life.” Cumberbatch was also asked if he had read the Doctor Strange comics while growing up, and though he revealed he hadn’t, the actor confirmed that “You can bet your bottom dollar I’m reading them now, avidly.” Scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange is scripted by Jon Spaihts and directed by Scott Derrickson. It is said to follow the story of neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

I really like these comments. For the record I wasn't in the camp that wanted Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange (I actually preferred Patrick Dempsey or even an Ethan Hawke), but I still enjoy the casting of Cumberbatch. Now to these comments I really like to see someone very passionate about a project and I'm excited to see what Cumberbatch can do in this film and other Marvel films.

Back in October, it was revealed that Scarlett Johansson had been offered the lead role in DreamWorks’ live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell and now Variety brings word that the actress has accepted the role! Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders will helm the feature from a script by William Wheeler, based on the series by Masamune Shirow. Produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul and with the backing of Steven Spielberg, the rights to Shirow’s original 1989 complex futuristic thriller, about the members of a covert ops unit that takes on technology-related crime, were picked up several years ago with plans to use the latest 3D technology to film it. In Japan, the huge success of the comics led to a number of anime film adaptations, a TV series and a series of video games with DreamWorks releasing the second anime film in North America. Johansson’s involvement in the film does raise questions about her place in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow. Though she is set to appear in this summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, could production on Ghost in the Shell prevent her involvement in Captain America: Civil War? It’s unclear at this point, though production on “Civil War” is set to begin this spring in Atlanta, Georgia, targeting a May 2016 release.

This is pretty underwhelming casting. Don't get me wrong Scarlett Johansson is an amazing actress and she is one of the few female action stars in the business. That being said this was a predictable choice because as I said before there are only a handful female action stars in Hollywood. I wish they would've went with a Margot Robbie, but I guess after hearing she was going to be in Suicide Squad that kind of squashed her chances. I'm not to familiar with the anime film, but I'm really excited to see how it turns out.

Earlier today, 20th Century announced that they had broken the global box office record with $5.5 million grossed in 2014 and they celebrated by dating a number of new movies including one anticipated sequel, a spin-off to the company’s most successful superhero franchise, another sequel to an upcoming reboot and much more. The big news was the announcement that they would be going into production on the much-rumored Gambit spin–off movie introducing Channing Tatum as the X-Men’s popular cajun energy manipulator, giving it a release date of October 7, 2016. (Currently, Universal has the musical comedy Monster High and Ben Affleck’s Live by Night are on that date). The third Untitled Planet of the Apes Movie, the sequel to last summer’s major blockbuster Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was moved to July 14, 2017, giving them another year to work on that, while The Fantastic Four 2, the sequel to this summer’s reboot of the Marvel superhero team, was moved from that date up to June 2, 2017. Another anticipated movie is the big screen adaptation of the hit video game Assassin’s Creed, which will now be released on December 21, 2016, the Wednesday before Christmas. Other release dates announced include Hugh Jackman’s turn as PT Barnum in The Greatest Showman on Earth, directed by Michael Gracey, which will be released on Christmas Day, December 25, 2016. (Four days after Assassin’s Creed.) The comedy Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates from “Funny or Die” director Jake Szymanski will get a wide release on July 29, 2016, and the adaptation of Charles Martin’s romantic drama The Mountain Between Us, starring Rosamund Pike and Charlie Hunnam, will come out on February 10, 2017.

These are all very interesting release dates. First with the Gambit movie it's going to be interesting to see a superhero film come out in October. I mean we already have films in the future using March and February now the only months not to have these yet are January (which will never happen) and September (which could be a very opportunistic month for studios to take chances. As for the release date of the third Planet of the Apes film I am really disappointed by it, but I'm not surprised. I really enjoyed the first two films (especially the last one) and I was really looking forward to the next one coming out in 2016, but I understand for it two reasons. One being that it continues with releasing these films 3 years apart (Rise in 2011 and Dawn in 2014) so it makes sense. The final one that I want to talk about is the Assassin's Creed movie which has had so many push-backs. I mean it was supposed to hit theaters this upcoming May and then it was pushed back to August of this year and then it was moved to 2016 and ow we finally have a release date which is a year and a half after its original date. I'm staring to get scared for the movie, but I'm still holding put hope for it, but I am very skeptical at this point.

20th Century Fox previously released a more holiday-themed teaser trailer for Blue Sky Studios’ Peanuts movie, and now we have a slightly more Woodstock-oriented version which you can check out below. For the first time ever, Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the gang we know and love from Charles Schulz’s timeless “Peanuts” comic strip will be making their big-screen debut; like they’ve never been seen before in a CG-animated feature film in 3D. The most popular and influential comic strip of all time, “Peanuts” was read every day by 355 million people in 75 countries. In addition to the famous strip, “Peanuts” holiday television specials such as “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” have won Emmy’s and continue to be among the highest rated prime time TV specials. Peanuts lands in theaters on November 6.

This was a really nice little trailer. Now granted it's not a whole lot different than the previous trailer, but I'm fine with a studio doing this because they aren't giving anything away about the film and for me I really like that. A lot of you know that I really enjoy The Peanuts and I'm really looking forward to the film (it's one of my most anticipated for the second half of the year and probably one of the top 10 for the entire year combined). The animation looks great and I cannot wait to see the film.

Following a brief break for the holiday season, cameras are once again rolling on the set of Spectre, the 24th entry in EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s James Bond franchise. As you can see from the just-released photo below, it appears that chilly things are in store for 007. Directed by the Academy Award winning Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty), Spectre stars Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Munich), Ben Wishaw (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, I’m Not There), Naomie Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, 28 Weeks Later), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Invisible Woman), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds), Monica Bellucci (Irreversible, Malena), David Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Man with the Iron Fists), Léa Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds, Blue is the Warmest Color), Andrew Scott (Locke, “Sherlock”) and Rory Kinnear (Quantum of Solace, The Imitation Game).  In the movie, a cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE. SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion), as Bond fans know, is a fictional global terrorist organization featured in Ian Fleming’s novels, as well as the films and video games based on those novels. The organization was led by the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, although the cast is definitely playing it coy about whether or not Blofeld will actually appear in the new film. Spectre, written by John Logan and Neal Purvis & Robert Wade, hits theaters on November 6, 2015.

I really like this photo for a couple of reasons. One being that it's nice to see that this film is actually filming and that it is officially going to happen. I say that because some people hear a film is coming and then it doesn't they wonder why and it's because they never got started filming. another reason is because I'm curious as to what will be going on in this location and scene. All I know is that I am extremely excited for this movie.
