My Review of Rosewater

So I recently watched Rosewater and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado......

Tehran-born Bahari (played by Gael García Bernal) is a broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the prime challenger to president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Mousavi's supporters rose up to protest Ahmadinejad's victory declaration hours before the polls closed, Bahari endured personal risk by sending footage of the street riots to the BBC. Bahari was arrested by police, led by a man identifying himself only as "Rosewater," (played by Kim Bodnia) who tortured and interrogated him over the next 118 days. With Bahari's wife leading an international campaign to have her husband freed, and Western media outlets keeping the story alive, Iranian authorities released Bahari on $300,000 bail and the promise he would act as a spy for the government.

This is a very powerful and emotional film. The story alone is just absolutely heart-breaking simply because of what this man went through and becuase it's based on a true story. The acting in the film is just absolutely superb and it mainly comes from Gael Garcia Bernal who gives such an amazing performance and really embraces the character and becomes Bahari. Jon Stewart who is mainly known for his political comedic satire work on his show The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central really steps out of his comfort zone and takes on this project and makes a stunning film in his directorial debut. My main problem with the film is that it could have focused on a few more things going outside of Bahari's conflict and the fact that it is Jon Stewart directing kind of overshadows the film as a whole and people are more focused on him then the film itself and I feel that the film would get more recognition if it were directed by someone else. Overall the film is emotional and takes you on so many different paths, but it is overshadowed by the director's marquee name. I give Rosewater an 8.5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Rosewater, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
