11-12-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Details are beginning to come together surrounding director Bryan Singer's next foray into 20th Century Fox's cinematic X-Universe, X-Men: Apocalypse. Today, The Hollywood Reporter claims that the script has a heavy focus on the romance between Michael Fassbender's Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique. According to the outlet, that plot is "front and center" to the storyline. Coupling this information with what we learned in September about the dynamic between Mystique and Nicholas Hoult's Beast, it sounds like a safe bet that we'll see some kind of romantic triangle. Also set to star James McAvoy (with more cast expected to be announced soon), X-Men: Apocalypse is scripted by Simon Kinberg, Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, cameras will start rolling on X-Men: Apocalypse in Montreal beginning April, 2015 for a May 27, 2016 release.

I really don't like this news. I don't like it when comic book movies put love stories in film and make them the central theme of the film (take The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for example). If they do go this route then I hope it's a small side story that just fills in to move the story along, but as a central theme it won't work.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word this afternoon that Academy Award-winning writer Mark Boal, who won in 2010 for The Hurt Locker and was nominated again for Zero Dark Thirty in 2013, has been brought on to work on the script for Sony's adaptation of the hit video game series Uncharted, of which Boal is reportedly a fan. Boal isn't the first screenwriter to tackle the project as Oscar nominee David O. Russell wrote a draft when he was originally attached and has been followed with scripts by Doctor Strange's Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, Safe House's David Guggenheim, and Cormac and Marianne Wibberley of National Treasure fame.

Based on the action-adventure video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the story follows a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is escalated when creatures -- actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis -- begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure's true secrets. The Seth Gordon-directed Uncharted is scheduled to be released on June 10, 2016.

This is fantastic news. Now granted the film has wen through a few other writers bedsides Boal, but I'm confident that he'll stay on board. He's an Academy Award winning writer and he could do wonders for this film. I'm a huge fan of the games and I'm really excited to see the film.

News broke late last month that Warner Bros. Pictures was looking for a female director to take on the Wonder Woman movie, and now we know who they were eyeing. According to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures is in negotiations with Michelle MacLaren to direct the June 23, 2017 release, starring Gal Gadot. Charles Roven will produce. Gadot will first appear as Wonder Woman in director Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, hitting theaters on March 25, 2016. MacLaren was a director and producer of "Breaking Bad" and has directed episodes of "Games of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead" as well.

If this is true then this is an amazing choice. This woman has three of the most watched shows in the history of television and she seems like the perfect choice to direct a Wonder Woman film. I honestly feel like that this could be like Thor: The Dark World which was directed by Alan Taylor who also directed Game of Thrones. I've been waiting for a Wonder Woman film for a while and if this news is true then I'm even more excited for this film.

With the announcement that James Wan was leaving the blockbuster street racing franchise after Furious 7 to tend his own series with The Conjuring 2 at Warner Bros--now scheduled for June 10, 2016--it seems the slot is open for a director to helm the next Dominic Toretto outing. According to Deadline, the man for the job might just be Justin Lin, who bowed out of the series after directing the most recent four films before Wan took over. While it can be chalked up to rumor right now, Deadline seems certain that Universal is gearing up for talks with Lin to direct back-to-back installments for what will become the series finale for the Fast gang. The multiple installments would be shot simultaneously, not unlike the multi-part finales of "Harry Potter," "Twilight," "The Hunger Games" and forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War.

This would all have to happen after Lin completes his commitment to lens the first two episodes of HBO's second series of "True Detective," not to mention the $100-million-dollar 3D Shaolin Temple remake which was announced back in January. Lin was previously attached to make the second Aaron Cross "Bourne" movie for Universal, before that project was delayed in favor of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass returning to the franchise. Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Furious 7. The new chapter of the hugely successful series also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. Directed by James Wan, the April 3, 2015 release also features Jason Statham, Tony Jaa, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, Djimon Hounsou, John Brotherton and a cameo by Iggy Azaela.

If true I really like this news. Justin Lin has really turned the franchise around and its made people excited for the teams next journey. James Wan was a great choice for 7, but since he can't really come back then going back to the well with Lin is a great idea. I also like the idea of filming two films back-to-back  because it's cheaper and it also keeps everyone together. I'm really excited for Furious 7 and I can't wait to see what the franchise has to offer from here on out.

20th Century Fox has debuted a new trailer for director Shawn Levy's Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Dan Stevens, Rebel Wilson and Ben Kingsley. Check it out in the player below, courtesy of Fandango! Get ready for the wildest and most adventure-filled "Night at the Museum" ever as Larry (Ben Stiller) spans the globe, uniting favorite and new characters while embarking on an epic quest to save the magic before it is gone forever. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb opens in theaters on December 19.

This was a pretty nice trailer. The trailer really capitalizes on Robin Williams tragic death and that really turned me off. I really enjoyed the past two films and I'm looking forward to the film simply because of Robin Williams and nothing else so I guess the trailer did its job.
