11-10-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

On the heels of a report that Jared Leto is in contention for the role of The Joker in Warner Bros.' upcoming Suicide Squad film, Collider reports that Margot Robbie has joined the cast in the role of Harley Quinn. Robbie has been in the mix for a role in the film for a few weeks now, along with the likes of Tom Hardy and Will Smith, though it was unknown at the time what her role would be. A previous report on the film stated that the line-up for “Task Force X” in the movie would include the super strong Blockbuster, the self-replicating Multiplex, the speedster Jaculi, the illusion-casting Mindboggler, the original Captain Boomerang George Harkness, the animal mimicker Vixen, and Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot; however, with both The Joker and Harley Quinn reportedly being involved, it's safe to say the script for Suicide Squad has been written to include additional characters from the DCU.

Harley Quinn has been a staple member of the Suicide Squad since DC Comics relaunched with "The New 52" back in 2011 and even retained her membership on the team after that series was cancelled and resurrected as "The New Suicide Squad." As for her sweetheart "Mister J," it's unclear what part The Joker would have in the film as the character has never been a member of the Suicide Squad due to his unpredictable tendencies, but given the nature of Harley Quinn's origin it's probably best to include the two of them in the film. Set to be directed by David Ayer, and potentially featuring the return of Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, Suicide Squad is set for release on August 5, 2016.

If this is true then this is perfect casting. Now when it was rumored about a month ago that she was in the running to be in the film I predicted that Margot Robbie would be Harley Quinn. Now this news come out and it's looking very likely that she'll take the role. If Leto is cast as The Joker and this news is true then this will be a powerful tandem on the big screen and I hope that both are true.

Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes recently passed $700 million at the worldwide box office and is now positioning leading man Andy Serkis for a potential Academy Award nomination for his role as Caesar. Reeves announced regarding the next chapter in the franchise, currently planned for release on July 29, 2016. "The first one is sort of how [Caesar] goes from humble beginnings to becoming a revolutionary," says Reeves. "In 'Dawn,' he really rose to occasion of becoming a leader in really challenging and difficult times. The notion of what we're after with the third is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal figure in ape history. He almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status... We're trying to play out those themes and continue to sort of explore it in this universe. Exploring human nature under the guise of apes."

Reeves also explained that Serkis' "outsider" take on Caesar is of vital importance to the arc of the character and is something that will certainly carry over to the third big screen chapter (or ninth, depending on your point of view). "A thing I always found very moving was the concept of a character that was [an outsider]," Reeves adds. "Andy [Serkis] told me the way he played him and the thing that really moved me was that [Caesar] was really all about being an outsider. [He] said that [he] felt [he] was human until the one day it was made clear that that [he isn't]. [He] said it felt like heartbreak. Like, 'Oh, I'm not one of them!' Then he's thrown in with the apes, but he's not one of them either. He's an outsider to both. That was very moving to me because he's an outsider to both but connected to both. He is the unique character in this story to be able to connect between the human and the ape world."

These are pretty cool comments. One of the reasons why i love these new Planet of the Apes movies is because the main character is so human eventhough he's an ape. I'm really anxious to see the next film and where the story goes next.

Details are beginning to materialize regarding Josh Trank's upcoming The Fantastic Four with star Toby Kebbell today spilling the beans about the altered origins of his iconic comic book villain, Doctor Doom. "The thing I really concentrated on for Doctor Doom -- or just "Doom," as we've got him -- was the voice," Kebell told ComingSoon.net during an interview to promote the upcoming Blu-ray of his recent Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. "Even on the animated series, they never got his voice what I imagined it to be when I read the comics as a little boy… What I spent the majority of my time doing was not just being a fan, but being a bit of pedant and making sure I got exactly what I always wanted to see. " Kebbell got a bit more specific with Collider, revealing that there's no Victor Von Doom (or Van Damme, for that matter). Instead, he's playing an iteration named Victor Domashev who, an "anti-social programmer," posts under the online handle "Doom". Also starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan and Tim Blake Nelson, The Fantastic Four hits the big screen August 7, 2015. Check back for more information as it becomes available and look for our full interview with Kebbell closer to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes's Blu-ray release on December 9.

This is really big news. I really like when comic book films stay true to the comics with a few wrinkles added in, but this is completely changing the character. Dr. Doom is such a pivotal character in the Marvel universe and to change his name is just not sitting well with me.

The Untitled Oliver Stone/Edward Snowden Project is now set to court controversy as Open Road Films and Endgame Entertainment are partnering for the U.S. release, with rumored front-runner Joseph Gordon-Levitt now confirmed to play the NSA whistleblower. Written and directed by three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK), the script is based on the books "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" by Luke Harding and "Time of the Octopus" by Anatoly Kucherena. The latter book mainly deals with former information analyst Snowden's time in Russia hoping to get asylum while the United States was demanding his extradition to potentially face jail time for leaking classified information.

The film is being produced by Moritz Borman and Eric Kopeloff, with production scheduled to kick-off in Munich in January 2015. "After working with Oliver on 'W' I am thrilled to be back in business with him, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the filmmmaking team and Endgame Entertainment, on this exciting project," stated Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg, Borman added: "Oliver and I were overwhelmed by the reaction to the screenplay from all quarters but, in the end, the enthusiasm from Tom & Jim and the distribution case they made, convinced us that the film would be in the perfect hands. This film needs an independent in the true sense, where political pressures will not come into play."

This is great news. I always like to see films get production companies to help back them and make the film. Now this film is going to cause a lot of controversy simply because of Snowden did. But putting all of that aside putting Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Oliver Stone together could work out tremendously and I hope it does.

Disney has a full slate, with 21 tent-pole movies being released in the next three years via Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar as well as the trusty Disney brand, and it looks like two of their previously "Untitled Disney Animation" slots have now been filled with Zootopia and Moana, both of which will be released in 3D. Zootopia will bow nationwide on March 4, 2016, and centers on a fast-talking fox on the run after being framed for a crime he didn't commit. He teams with the self-righteous rabbit cop who's chasing him to unlock a bigger conspiracy. It is being directed by Byron Howard (Tangled) and written by Jared Bush.

This is really great news both films have really solid release dates and will offer counter-programming from the other films coming out on those dates with them (Zootopia has to go against Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Moana currently has no competition). Both films sound really interesting and I cannot wait to see them.
