Weekend Movie News 3-6-15 to 3-8-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Walt Disney Pictures has debuted a brand-new poster for the upcoming Tomorrowland which you can check below. In addition, a new trailer for the film will debut on Monday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time which will be followed by a live Q&A with director Brad Bird and producer Damon Lindelof on the film’s Facebook page. From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world – and them – forever. Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, Tomorrowland promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of. The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson. Tomorrowland opens in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2015.

Tomorrowland

This is a pretty cool poster. It gives us a better look at both George Clooney's and Britt Robertson's characters and Tomorrowland itself. Its more of vibrant poster than the teaser poster. The one good thing about a new trailer which we'll see tomorrow and I can't wait to see what it shows us.

Back in September, Jeremy Renner teased that there were “whispers” that he might appear in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that he will in fact reprise his role of Hawkeye in the sequel. Though the character wasn’t present for the original “Civil War” storyline in the source material, he was critical of Tony Stark’s position after the fact, so expect him to join the ranks of Steve Rogers and company. The cast for Captain America: Civil War continues to grow, in what Anthony Mackie calls “Avengers 3.8.” In addition to Renner, “Civil War” will feature Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mackie as The Falcon, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chadwick Boseman in his MCU debut as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl in a mystery role, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, and the brand-new Spider-Man. Set to be directed once again by the Russo Brothers, Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016. Jeremy Renner can next be seen as Hawkeye in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

This is great news to hear. Jeremy Renner has done a fantastic job with the character of Hawkeye eventhough he has been underused in the entire MCU so to hear that he will be in what could possibly be the biggest Marvel movie of all-time gets me really excited. There have been rumors circulating that Hawkeye was going to be killed off in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but now with this report is looking unlikely he will be killed. Now it could still come true as Marvel has not officially states that Hawkeye would be returning for Captain America: Civil War so we'll just have to wait and see.

Speaking of Jeremy Renner, he is joining Amy Adams in the big screen adaptation of Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life, says The Hollywood Reporter. Renner and Adams previously appeared together in David O. Russell’s American Hustle. Based on an award-winning short story by Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author Ted Chiang, Story of Your Life is said to be a mind-bending science fiction thriller with a powerful, emotional twist. After aliens land around the globe, a linguist (Adams) is recruited by the US government in a race to decipher their intentions on Earth. As she learns to communicate with the aliens, she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit. According to the trade, Renner will play a physics professor paired by the government with the linguist to help communicate with the aliens. Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Blade Runner sequel) is directing the adaptation. Eric Heisserer wrote the script for the film, which is being produced by Glen Basner’s FilmNation, David Linde’s Lava Bear Films and 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Levine. Paramount Pictures will distribute the movie in the U.S.

This is terrific casting. As I said before Jeremy Renner has done an amazing job as Hawkeye and he's done quite well for himself outside of the MCU. He's a two-time Academy award nominated actor so getting someone of his talent for any movie is a good thing. The film also sounds really interesting and it will give us our first look at how director Denis Villeneuve handles a sci-fi film before starting on Blade Runner 2. The film sounds interesting and I really love everyone that is involved and I cannot wait to see it.

Pre-production continues on Warner Bros.’ upcoming Suicide Squad film and yesterday director David Ayer tweeted an image of actress Cara Delevingne, who will play Enchantress, visiting the set. Following that, Delevingne had some high praise for the film, saying: @Caradelevingne @DavidAyerMovies this movie is going to blow people's brains out! LITERALLY! #SuicideSquad. Delevingne will appear alongside Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the group was retooled into its current iteration by John Ostrander in 1989. The team has included countless DC villains (and heroes) among its ranks throughout the years. It’s also been a staple of recent DC media, “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team. Written and directed by Ayer, Suicide Squad is setting up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension. Following two months of pre-production, the film will shoot from April until September for a planned August 5, 2016 release.

These are some pretty confident comments. Look the cast and director for the film are amazing choices,. but this is an unproven property and it's too early to tell if this film will literally blow people's minds. I think with everyone that is involved the film will no doubt be amazing, but right now we just have to temper expectations. Now they could also be referencing the fact that in every member of the Suicide Squad's head is a chip that be remotely activated to blow your head clean off so it could be a nod to that but right now who knows.

The Weinstein Company has just released the trailer for their upcoming action thriller No Escape (formerly The Coup), starring Owen Wilson (Inherent Vice, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb), Lake Bell (In a World…, Million Dollar Arm), and Pierce Brosnan (The November Man, How to Make Love Like an Englishman) and you can check it out below. No Escape centers on an American businessman (Wilson) as he and his family settle into their new home in Southeast Asia. Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city. No Escape is directed by John Erick Dowdle (Devil, As Above, So Below) and was written together with his brother, Drew Dowdle. Look for it to hit theaters on September 2.

This was actually a pretty cool trailer. It's great to see Pierce Brosnan back in an action movie and it's very surprising to see Owen Wilson in one as well. He actually looks like a guy who could hold his own. The film sounds amazing and this trailer really made me peak my interest about this film and I can't wait to see it and I'm excited to see how Owen Wilson handles being in a genre that he's not used to being in.
