So I recently watched Chappie and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado.........
In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie (played and voiced by Sharlto Copley), is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful, destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.
This film is a complete disappointment. This film had a lot of potential and from the trailer I thought the film would be a mix of Short Circuit and RoboCop and it turns out to be neither of those films. Neil Bloomkamp is one of the most talented directors in the business and when he came out with District 9 everyone thought he would be the next big thing, but instead he's had two back-to-back teriible movies and I'm starting to really get worried about him directing the next Alien film. Another thing that made me pretty upset with the film is that it focused on two musicians who can't act worth a crap and barely use stars like Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver. The two who can't act are named Ninja and Yolandi (those are their names in the movie and in real life) and they are apart of the band Die Antwoord who are Johannesburg, South Africa natives just like director Neil Bloomkamp. The film is pretty much an advertisement for their band as their music is used throughout the entire film and they even got to wear their own merchandise in the film. Plus there is a 30 to 45 minute stretch where the film just focuses on them and Chappie and they are on-screen as much as Chappie is. The film does have a pretty heartfelt story and when they are on-screen Patel, Jackman and weaver give really great performances. Overall this film is a complete disappointment and I regret spending money on seeing it. I give Chappie a 2.5 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Chappie, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
