3-19-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Although a Fraggle Rock film has been in the planning stages for some time, it looks like the big screen adaptation of the Jim Henson series is finally moving forward with Variety reporting that the project has found a headliner in none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt! Gordon-Levitt will produce and star for New Regency, The Henson Co. and Lisa Henson. "The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations,” says the star, whose specific role in the film currently remains a mystery, “first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock’. They’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.” The original series, which premiered on HBO in 1983, featured a world populated by a mix of human characters and Fraggle Rock puppets. Initial plans for the movie had the core characters Gogo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red leaving their home in Fraggle Rock and interacting with humans. Gordon-Levitt can next be seen in several upcoming projects later this year, including Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, Oliver Stone’s Snowden and the still-untitled Christmas comedy from director Jonathan Levine that will also star Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie and Lizzy Caplan.

This is fantastic casting. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most talented actors on the planet and he is an Academy Award caliber actor and adding him to any film is a great idea. I'm also a huge fan of Fraggle Rock. I used to watch it as a kid and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only question is what type of film it will be and I'm thinking it will be a CGI animated film that will be suits the story. I'm excited for the film and I cannot wait to see the film.

Following a bit of a tease yesterday, comedian T.J. Miller has confirmed on Twitter that he will be playing the role of Weasel in Twentieth Century Fox’s upcoming Deadpool movie. "@nottjmiller Yes yes y'all.  Weasel in the house.  #Vancouver" Created by Fabian Nicieza and Joe Madureira, Weasel has served as Deadpool’s friend, sidekick, and arms dealer in the source material since his debut in 1993. He would later go on to be an enemy of the Merc with a Mouth as the character “The House.” Set to appear alongside Miller are Ryan Reynolds in the title role along with Ed Skrein, Gina Carano, and Morena Baccarin. The film will also feature the mutant Colossus, though Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not appear as the character. Tim Miller is set to direct the movie from a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool is currently scheduled for a release on February 12, 2016.

This makes so much sense. If you know about the character of Weasel then you know that T.J. Miller is perfect for the part. Weasel is Deadpool's best friend who also has a crazy side and with this they could build towards the character being a villain in future Deadpool films. T.J. Miller is a very underrated actor and I'm glad to see him get a chance to shine. He is also very funny and I cannot wait to see what he brings to the character.

It’s finally chimichanga time for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise spinoff Deadpool as production begins in Vancouver on the feature film starring Ryan Reynolds as the “merc with a mouth”. Just after T.J. Miller was announced to play Weasel, comes confirmation that Morena Baccarin will be playing “Vanessa,” who is almost certainly the comics’ Vanessa Geraldine Carlysle, also known as the shapeshifting mutant Copycat. Created by Fabian Nicieza and Joe Madureira, Copycat made her comic book debut in the same issue as Deadpool, “New Mutants” #98, although fans didn’t know it at the time. The shapeshifting former love of Deadpool was secretly infiltrating X-Force disguised as Domino with a mission to kill the mutant team’s leader, Cable. It wasn’t until several years later, during Marvel’s “Flashback Month,” that Copycat’s full origin story was revealed in the pages of “Deadpool” #-1. Also starring Ed Skrein and Gina Carano, Deadpool will also feature the mutant Colossus, though Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not appear as the character. Tim Miller is set to direct the movie from a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool is currently scheduled for a release on February 12, 2016.

This is not surprising news whatsoever. It's been speculated for a long-time and it's finally good to get a confirmation. It also makes sense for Baccarin to play this character simply because every film has to have a love interest and Copycat is Deadpool's love interest. I really enjoy Baccarin on Gotham and I can't wait to see her in the film.

20th Century Fox has revealed the first trailer along with some new stills for Paper Towns, the YA movie based on the novel by “The Fault in Our Stars” author John Green and starring Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne and you can check it out below. Paper Towns is a coming-of-age story centering on Quentin and his enigmatic neighbor Margo, who loved mysteries so much she became one. After taking him on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears–leaving behind cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. The search leads Quentin and his quick-witted friends on an exhilarating adventure that is equal parts hilarious and moving. Ultimately, to track down Margo, Quentin must find a deeper understanding of true friendship–and true love. Directed by Jake Schreier (Robot & Frank), the film also stars Austin Abrams, Halston Sage and Justice Smith. The screenplay was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. Paper Towns opens in theaters on July 24.

This was a pretty cool trailer. It looks like this film will have a lot of humorous moments as well as some heartfelt ones. I haven't read the book, but from what I hear it's actually pretty great. I really loved The Fault in Our Stars (never thought I would say that) and I think this film has the potential to bed better than that. Right now we just have to wait and see.

Relativity and EuropaCorp have revealed the teaser trailer for The Transporter Refueled, the latest (but Jason Statham-less) installment in the hit action franchise and you can check it out below. The producers of Lucy and the Taken trilogy bring you the next adrenaline-fueled installment of The Transporter series starring newcomer Ed Skrein as Frank Martin, the most highly-skilled transporter money can buy. The stakes are greater and technology better, but the same three simple rules apply: never change the deal, no names and never open the package. When Frank is hired by cunning femme fatale Anna and her three stunning sidekicks, he quickly discovers he’s been played. Anna and her cohorts have kidnapped his father (Ray Stevenson) in order to coerce Frank into helping them take down a ruthless group of Russian human traffickers. Fueled by revenge, he will break all his rules and stop at nothing to rescue his father in this action-packed thrill ride across the French Riviera. The Transporter Refueled explodes into theaters on June 19.

This was a pretty decent trailer. Look I'm not the biggest fan of the Transporter franchise, but this film looks pretty interesting. From what I have seen of the films it will be very odd not seeing Jason Statham in the film. It looks like this will be an over-the-top action film that you will stuff popcorn in your mouth for.
