3-9-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Walt Disney Pictures has brought online the new trailer for the upcoming Tomorrowland which you can watch below. From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world – and them – forever. Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, Tomorrowland promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of. The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson. Tomorrowland is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Bernard Bellew, Jeff Jensen and Brigham Taylor serving as executive producers. Tomorrowland opens in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2015.

This was an awesome trailer. It was action-packed it gave us a better look at the movie and all I can say is that there is no way that this film can fail. It looks just absolutely beautiful and this could be Disney's best original film of all-time. I love the cast that's involved and I'm a fan of Brad Bird and I honestly think that this is his audition for a Star Wars movie in the near future.

When he’s sick with a cold, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn does what any major Hollywood filmmaker would do: Sit in bed and answer questions from the internet. Gunn took to his Facebook page and agreed to answer fan queries, the biggest shocker being that Marvel Studios will apparently have no presence at this July’s San Diego Comic-Con. Fan Stephania Besco asked, “Will you be at San Diego Comic Con this year?” to which Gunn replied, “I’m not sure. Marvel isn’t going so I’m not sure I will either.” Another fan on Twitter suggested that Gunn might be lying (regarding another topic), to which he replied: Although disappointing to SDCC pass holders, this is perfectly reasonable as Marvel parent company Disney is holding their biennial D23 Expo in August, and as in 2013, Marvel (as well as Lucasfilm) will likely have a huge presence there.

This isn't shocking news. In all honesty Marvel doesn't need to be at comic-con. They put on their own event back in October and that was a complete success and plus Disney has D23 so going to comic-con is actually a complete waste of time. I would like to see them their, but I not surprised that they won't be there.

New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow Pictures’ action-thriller San Andreas, starring Dwayne Johnson, has dropped an Earth-shattering poster (via The Rock’s Twitter account), which you can check out below. After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning, and when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started. Directed by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), San Andreas also stars Carla Gugino, Kylie Minogue, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt and Art Parkinson. It will be released in theaters on May 29.

San Andreas

I really like this poster. Now granted it's full of cgi images but still it gives you a sense of danger. I've been a little worried about the film simply because it reeks of one of the 90's disaster movies like Twister and Volcano. Now granted I like those movies, but I want this film to be more than that and I don't want this film to end being like Into the Storm, but with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the film I think that this film can be great.

A surprise move on the part of Sony Pictures, Deadline has just revealed that development is underway on a new Ghostbusters film separate from the one that Paul Feig is directing. According to the outlet, Captain America: The Winter Soldier helmers Joe and Anthony Russo are tentatively planning to helm with Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce providing the screenplay. What’s more, Channing Tatum will produce and likely star with the plot following an idea Tatum has been developing with Dan Aykroyd! “We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Ivan Reitman tells the outlet. “This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.” Described as a “counterpart” to Feig’s Ghostbusters, details are currently few and we’re not quite sure yet whether this new film will be branching out of the world of the reboot or whether it will have ties back to Reitman’s original two Ghostbusters features. The news does arrive simultaneously with the announcement of Ghostcorps, a new company from Reitman and Aykroyd being established at Sony with an aim to explore Ghostbusters merchandising opportunities, including potential films, television tie-ins, and more. Feig’s take on the property is said to be targeting a scarier tone that will not maintain any continuity with the original film or its 1989 sequel (or the surprisingly continuity-heavy animated series “The Real Ghostbusters,” for that matter). Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon are set to headline the July 22, 2016 release.

This is pretty interesting news. It's interesting because of there being a new male led ghostbusters film after we were just told the female reboot would start it's own franchise. My question is why not just scrap the female idea and just reboot Ghostubusters with a male cast instead. Right now Sony is so desperate that they'll do anything. I do like the idea of Channing Tatum and The Russo Brothers working together and they could come up with some pretty cool stuff. I fully expect Jonah Hill to be in this with the possibility of Craig Robinson as well and the fourth member can be whoever. I like the idea eventhough it doesn't make much sense.

Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ new big-screen, 3D adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved classic The Jungle Book, marking the feature film directorial debut of Andy Serkis. Blending live action and performance capture, the film features an impressive roster of stars, including Oscar winners Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett and Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch. The story follows the upbringing of the human child Mowgli, raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own. All but one: the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins. The actors performing the roles of the story’s central animal characters are: Cumberbatch as the tiger, Shere Khan; Cate Blanchett as Kaa, the snake; Christian Bale as the panther, Bagheera; Serkis himself as Baloo, the bear; Peter Mullan (Hercules, War Horse) as the leader of the wolf pack, Akela; Tom Hollander (the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Pride & Prejudice) as the scavenging hyena, Tabaqui; Naomie Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Skyfall) as Nisha, the female wolf, who adopts the baby Mowgli as one of her cubs; Eddie Marsan (Snow White and the Huntsman, Sherlock Holmes) as Nisha’s mate, Vihaan; and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Mowgli’s Brother Wolf. On the human side, young actor Rohan Chand (The Hundred-Foot Journey, Lone Survivor) will play the boy raised by wolves, Mowgli. The film is being produced by Steve Kloves, who wrote seven of the blockbuster Harry Potter films, and Jonathan Cavendish (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason), with Nikki Penny (Gravity) serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by Callie Kloves, based on the stories by Kipling.Among those collaborating with Serkis behind the scenes are production designer Gary Freeman (Cinderella), Oscar-winning editor Mark Sanger (Gravity) and Oscar-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Elizabeth: The Golden Age). The film is slated for release on October 6, 2017.

This is great news to hear. Out of the two Jungle Book movies coming out in the next couple of years I most excited for this one for a plethora of different reasons. It's Andy Serkis's directorial debut and the cast in the film is amazing that this film could actually contend for some Oscars when it's released. I'm a fan of The original Jungle Book and I cannot wait to see this film.
