Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

There’s a new rumor hitting today via Deadline that suggests that Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, Killing Them Softly) is up for a role in the upcoming first standalone Star Wars film, Rogue One. If it pans out, Mendelsohn will join previously-announced headliner Felicity Jones in the Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) film. Official details on Rogue One are few, although the idea for the story is said to have come from John Knoll, the Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor who currently serves as chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. Kroll is executive producing the film along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce with John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) attached to co-produce. It was also recently confirmed that Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech) will be providing the score. Fans can currently check out Mendelsohn on the new Netflix series “Bloodline” where he stars alongside Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, Norbert Leo Butz, Jacinda Barrett, Jamie McShane, Enrique Murciano, Sam Shepard and Sissy Spacek. All 13 season one episodes premiered on the streaming service just days ago.
If this is comes true then this is great casting. Mendelson is a very talented and very underrated actor and I think he would be a perfect for for this film. I think he would be a perfect fit as an imperial officer or we could see him as rebel helping Felicity Jones' character. This film is shaping up to be really great and I can' wait to see it.
Just two days after the announcement of the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey Unrated Edition, director Sam Taylor-Johnson has made it official – she’s not returning for the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel. Deadline posted the following statement from the director: “Directing Fifty Shades Of Grey has been an intense and incredible journey for which I am hugely grateful. I have Universal to thank for that. I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers and crew and most especially, with Dakota and Jamie. While I will not be returning to direct the sequels, I wish nothing but success to whosoever takes on the exciting challenges of films two and three.” Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation of the E L James novel has earned an impressive $558.6 million at the worldwide box office and was made for just $40 million. However, it has not been a secret that the director clashed with James while making the film, and her departure is not much of a surprise. There is no word on who may replace her, although both Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will reprise their roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Fifty Shades of Grey also stars Jennifer Ehle, Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford, Max Martini, Rita Ora, Marcia Gay Harden and Callum Keith Rennie. A global phenomenon, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was first published in 2011 and follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan) and college student Anastasia Steele (Johnson). Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (2012) explore the couples deepening relationship. The trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the Fifty Shades trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever.
This isn't surprising news to hear. Like the article says she did not enjoy directing the film and if you don't enjoy doing something then you don't need to be doing it anymore. I'm not overly concerned who they get to direct the last two films because I could care less about the films. I'm excited to see what Sam Taylor-Johnson does next because she has a lot of potential to be one of the best female directors.
Sony Pictures Animation announced today that their still-untitled animated Smurfs movie, previously set for release August 5, 2016, will now arrive a bit later than originally anticipated. It is now the first film to claim a March 31, 2017 release. The film, which is said to mark a brand new, fully-animated take on the beloved blue creatures, is being directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet), produced by Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web, The Smurfs) and co-produced by Mary Ellen Bauder (Hotel Transylvania). “With a fully animated feature close in tone and design to Peyo’s original creation, we’re embracing everything that has made the Smurfs so special for audiences worldwide,” says Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures. “The date is a perfect match for this movie. With the kids on break, every day plays like summer, and for franchises with globalappeal like the Smurfs, audiences are ready to turn out for great entertainment.” Asbury himself took to the film’s official production blog with his own statement: I want nothing more than for this ALL-NEW ANIMATED SMURF MOVIE REBOOT to be the very best ever depiction of the Smurfs since the original Peyo comic books. Since this new film has no connection to the previous live action hybrids, we have a whole new world to create and it is critical to me and my crew that we deliver a movie that will enchant families and fans worldwide for years to come. So when my partners and I here at Sony Pictures Animation realized that rushing towards a summer 2016 release date meant having to launch production on a story that was not fully in the place we wanted it to be yet, we have decided to give ourselves a little more time to not compromise quality and deliver the truly smurftastic movie we all want to see on the big screen. Our new release date, March 31, 2017, is a perfect opportunity to be sprung with the Smurfs in Spring! The Easter date is a perfect match for this particular movie for fans around the world. Get ready to experience an all-new adventure unrelated to the first two Smurfs films. Now with more time to work with, we’re delivering the best movie possible without compromising – I could not be more happy!
I'm not excited for this news whatsoever. I say that because I could care less about these films. The Smurfs movies have all been terrible and I don't expect this one to be any different. Now granted these are going to be a new apart of a new reboot, but I still expect these to be crap. It's not going up against anything as of right now, but it could still make a lot of money at the box office.
In various stages of development for quite some time, it appears that a live-action adaptation of the anime classic Robotech is finally on the way! Sony Pictures has just announced that they have secured the big screen rights to the property with, in their words, “the intention of moving quickly toward production of a future global franchise”! “Robotech” debuted in the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions. A peculiar science fiction amalgamation, the show re-edited and re-wrote the dialogue of three Japanese anime series (“The Super Dimension Fortress Macross,” “Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross” and “Genesis Climber MOSPEADA”) to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series. A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots. Immortals and 300 franchise producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are developing Robotech with Michael Gordon (300, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra) set to provide the screenplay. This team will “bring their modern sensibility to the tentpole, reintroducing today’s audiences to the Robotech universe.”
The project will be overseen at Sony Pictures by Doug Belgrad, Michael De Luca, and Matthew Milam. Frank Agrama of Harmony Gold, which is the original intellectualproperty rights holder, will executive produce with Michael Gordon and Jehan Agrama. “‘Robotech’ is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” says De Luca. “That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, ‘Robotech’ offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.” “When the rights to ‘Robotech’ became available we jumped,” adds Nunnari. “Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today’s world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals AND powerful themes. The characters in ‘Robotech’ wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.” “I’m thrilled to be back in business with Sony Pictures and Gianni and I look forward to working with the studio on this global franchise-driven opportunity,” says Canton. “‘Robotech’ is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.” “Patience is a virtue,” continues Agrama. “We at Harmony Gold have waited 30 years for the chips to fall in place. Finally they have, and finally our dreams have come true. I am sure that our fans and the public at large will be flabbergasted with what they will hear and see on the screen. Thank you Gianni, Mark, Ralph and above all, all of the Columbia Pictures people involved.” The deal on behalf of Harmony Gold and the producers was negotiated by Ralph P Brescia of Bloom Hergott.
This is great news to hear. Granted I wasn't alive in the 1980's to see the original series, but I have seen the re-runs during Toonami on Cartoon Network back in the day. I think the property fits well to the big-screen and it could be a really good mix of Pacific Rim and Transformers. I'm excited to hear the news and I can't wait to see who they get to direct the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, five-time Academy Award-nominee Amy Adams (Big Eyes) is set to star in the thriller Nocturnal Animals opposite Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) in what will be the second feature film from fashion designer-turned-director Tom Ford (A Single Man). Apparently Joaquin Phoenix (Her, Inherent Vice) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass, Avengers: Age of Ultron) are also said to be circling the adaptation of Austin Wright’s 1993 novel “Tony and Susan.” The book tells the tale of a the title woman who receives a novel manuscript from her ex-husband of 20-years called “Nocturnal Animals,” which details a family vacation turned deadly, leading Susan to recall dark truths about herself and her first marriage. Smokehouse Pictures partners George Clooney and Grant Heslov, who won the Best Picture Oscar for Argo, will produce Nocturnal Animals. They have a first-look deal at Sony, although no studio is currently attached. Amy Adams just finished reprising her role as Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s 2016 blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and is set to reunite with American Hustle co-star Jeremy Renner in the sci-fi drama Story of Your Life. Gyllenhaal has the adventure Everest, boxing film Southpaw and the drama Demolition all in post-production.
This is fantastic casting. Amy Adams is an Academy Award nominated actress and Jake Gyllenhaal has the talent to win an Oscar. I think putting them togehter with the speculated Joaquin Phoenix and Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a great idea. The film sounds really interesting and I can't wait ti see it.
