3-12-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Straight from The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Bob Iger has delivered a bombshell of an announcement revealing that the first upcoming “Star Wars” standalone film, set to be written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards, is officially titled Rogue One and will star Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones. It will begin shooting this summer in London and debut in theaters on December 16, 2016. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII and that it will open in theaters May 26, 2017 – forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce the film. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, will debut in theaters on December 18, 2015.

I love everything about this. First we already knew that Rian Johnson was directing Episode VIII and writing the script for Episode IX, but we now we have official confirmation from the man himself Bob Iger who has done a fantastic job as the president of Disney. As for Rogue One I absolutely love the title as it fits in with thew universe and it gives us a little idea of what the film will be about. The release date for Episode VIII is great as well because Star Wars is finally coming back to Summer and it is going to destroy the summer box office, but it will be very interesting to see how they market the film simply because of it coming out 5 months after the first spin-off film.

In one of the biggest non-surprises of the decade, it was officially announced today that Frozen 2 is in the works at Walt Disney Animation Studios with the first film’s directors, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, and producer Peter Del Vecho returning. The news was announced at Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders this morning by Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company; John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and actor Josh Gad, who provides the voice of Olaf from Frozen. “We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters,” said John Lasseter. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.” A release date and production details are on ice for now. A short film set in the world of the popular animated movie, Frozen Fever, is attached to Cinderella, which opens in theaters tonight. Frozen was released in November 2013 and went on to gross over $1.2 billion at the global box office and win two Academy Awards.

This is not surprising news whatsoever. Look Disney is in the business to make money and Frozen made well over $1 billion, it became the highest grossing Disney movie of all-time and it is currently number 6 at the all-time worldwide box office so making a sequel is a no-brainer. I really love Frozen for what it is was worth eventhough I hate the soundtrack now after it has been played over and over and over again. With the sequel there will be more annoying songs, but the film will be pretty spectacular.

20th Century Fox has revealed the first poster for Paper Towns, the new YA movie based on the novel by “The Fault in Our Stars” author John Green and starring Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne. You can check out the poster below. Paper Towns is a coming-of-age story centering on Quentin and his enigmatic neighbor Margo, who loved mysteries so much she became one. After taking him on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears–leaving behind cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. The search leads Quentin and his quick-witted friends on an exhilarating adventure that is equal parts hilarious and moving. Ultimately, to track down Margo, Quentin must find a deeper understanding of true friendship–and true love. Directed by Jake Schreier (Robot & Frank), the film also stars Austin Abrams, Halston Sage and Justice Smith. The screenplay was written by Scott Neustadter and  Michael H. Weber. Paper Towns opens in theaters on July 24.

Paper Towns

This is a pretty cool poster. It doesn't give away much, but it does give off the lovey-dovey, but serious tone. I honestly know nothing about the film other than what it says in the plot description, but I have a friend who has read the book and they have told me great things about it and I'm actually looking forward to it. I loved the first novel by John Green to be made into a film called The Fault in Our Stars and I really loved the film and hopefully this one can be just as great.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Paramount’s recently-announced continuation of The Ring series, titled Rings, is expected to be a prequel about the origin of Samara’s reign of terror. The film reportedly takes place before the creation of the unmarked tape which terrorized the characters of The Ring and The Ring Two. This begs the question of whether this is a pure retelling of Samara’s tragic childhood, as we experienced briefly via flashback in The Ring? It can also be presumed that the recently-cast Matilda Lutz will potentially be playing a teenaged Samara. The Japanese Ringu films, from which The Ring franchise sprang, concluded their four-film cycle with 2000’s prequel titled Ring 0: Birthday, which takes place 30 years before the original film and tells the story of how Samara’s counterpart Sadako was murdered at age 19 and became cursed.  Released in 2002, Gore Verbinksi’s The Ring was an English-language remake of Hideo Nakata’s 1998 supernatural thriller, Ringu, which told the story of a videotape of ghostly imagery that causes anyone who watches it to die seven days later. Ringu was followed by three Japanese sequels, while the Verbinski version received its own 2005 sequel directed by Nakata, The Ring Two. F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) is directing Rings, with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman rewriting the current sequel draft by David Loucka. It is set for a release this November 13, 2015.

To be brutally honest I could care less about this news. Look the first Ring film was ok for what it was worth, but the sequels we're just god-awful and I don't think that the film needs a prequel especially after this long after the first film came out. Plus seeing Akiva Goldsman attached to write the film makes me cringe. He has wrote some great movies, but I will always blame him for ruining Batman with Batman & Robin, but he is an Academy Award winning writer so he does have some credibility. Overall I could care less about this film.

Production has officially wrapped on the upcoming franchise entry Mission: Impossible V. Helmed by McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher), Mission: Impossible V also stars Jeremy Renner (Marvel’s The Avengers, Kill the Messenger), Alec Baldwin (The Departed, “30 Rock”), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World’s End), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead) Simon McBurney (The Last King of Scotland, The Theory of Everything) and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, The Red Tent) and features a screenplay by Will Staples and Drew Pearce. An official plot synopsis for Mission: Impossible V has not, as of yet, been released, but McQuarrie recently teased on social media that we’ll be getting the film’s full title along with a trailer “very, very soon”. A Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot production, Mission: Impossible V will hit 2D and IMAX theaters July 31, opening opposite Tarsem Singh’s sci-fi thriller Self/less and Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama Southpaw.

This is great news to hear. Like I always say you never really get comfortable with a film coming out until it is either filming or it has officially wrapped production and this film has done it. Now that the film is done it's time for a trailer. Originally this was suppose to come out around Christmas so I could see a trailer coming out  in the next couple of weeks, but now that the film is just a little over 4 months away be prepared for a couple of trailers to come out in the next couple of months with the first one coming out possibly by the end of next week at the latest.
