My Review of Midnight Special

So I recently watched Midnight Special and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

The government and a group of religious extremists pursue a man (played by Michael Shannon) and his son (played by Jaeden Lieberher), a young boy who possesses special powers.

This was a really fun film. Sci-Fi movies today aren't the greatest in the world mainly because they often put way too much thought into the overall plot and it tends to lose audience members. This film doesn't do that as it takes a simple approach, but it looks at the broader picture without making it a big deal. The performances are just spectacualr and Michael Shannon is the real standout and he is just an absolutely amazing actor and he proves it in this film. Most of the film at times feels like Close Encounters of Third Kind, but there is also a few bits and pieces of other sci-fi films and it really does a nice job of honoring what had come before it. Jeff Nichols is a fascinating director and he did a masterful job of crafting this story into what it was and it wouldn't be shocking to see him direct a big blockbuster in the near future. There are times where the film gets predictable, but there is enough intrigue to where there are surprises spread throughout the film. You also don't generally see excellent visual effects in small budget films like this, but the effects are just breathtakingly awesome. Overall this is a great small budget sci-fi film with some spectacular performances and a great story, but there are some predictable moments that can take you out of the film. I give Midnight Special a 8.5 out of 10.
