4-9-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Though The Flash is racing around on The CW every Tuesday night, Warner Bros. continues to develop a feature film version of the character to tie into their larger DC Cinematic Universe and they’ve just taken a big step forward. Deadline reports that The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in the process of writing a treatment for the scarlet speedster’s big screen adaptation. It’s unclear if the pair will direct the feature, though it remains a possibility. Last year it was revealed that We Need to Talk About Kevin and The Perks of Being a Wallflower star Ezra Miller had been cast in the role of The Flash for the upcoming Justice League Part One, and potentially next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, though which version of the character it will be has yet to be confirmed. The Flash is currently set for release March 23, 2018, just six weeks ahead of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 on May 4, 2018. Currently Grant Gustin plays The Flash in the hit CW series, but the character has previously been played by the likes of John Wesley Shipp in the 1990 series and Kyle Gallner in “Smallville.” Adam Brody was previously cast in the role for Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller’s defunct Justice League film.

This is great news to hear. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are two of the most talented directors and writers on the planet and they've had a very successful partnership with Warner Bros. so it's no surprise that they were brought on for a DC film. as of now they are not confirmed to direct, but all indications seem to point towards them directing the film and I would be ok with that. I think they'll right a fun and entertaining script and I can't wait to see it.

Although the character was previously glimpsed on a promotional banner released late last year, EW today provides us with the first photographic look at Ant-Man‘s foe Yellowjacket and you can check out the image below. In the film, the man under the Yellowjacket suit is Corey Stoll’s Darren Cross. In the comics, Yellowjacket was initially an alternate superhero identity for Hank Pym, the costume having made its first appearance in “The Avengers” #59. Because of the severe mental stress he was under, Yellowjacket actually manifested itself as the darker side of Pym, leading to the character’s infamous turn to spousal abuse. Later on, a criminal named Rita DeMara stole the suit and became at first a supervillain and, later on, a sort of antihero, eventually traveling to the 30th century and teaming up with a very different Guardians of the Galaxy team. “Hank Pym’s Ant-Man suit doesn’t have a single weapon,” director Peyton Reed tells EW, “whereas Yellowjacket is armed with plasma cannons.” Ant-Man follows con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) who, armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Also starring Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Abby Ryder Fortson, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, Wood Harris, John Slattery, Gregg Turkington and T.I., Ant-Man hits theaters on July 17, 2015.

This is a pretty cool look. We got a very small glimpse of Yellowjacket in the Ant-Man trailer but not good enough for a picture. He looks amazing and he has everything thing that I expected from the character. I think Cory Stoll is going to knock the part of the park and I cannot wait to see how he does with the role.

I really like hearing this. One of the reasons why I like hearing this is because it allows me to prepare ahead of time for the annual live blog that I do. Now I know the dates of the 88th, 89th and 90th Academy Awards. I know I'm a nerd for this but I don't care. I'm just curious who the host will be for these 3 shows. I'm personally rooting for Kevin Hart to host next year's show.

As was speculated the last time he revealed concept art for X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer has revealed to Empire that actor Ben Hardy is indeed playing Angel in the upcoming film. “Ben Hardy is Angel – I shall confirm it for you!” said Singer. “But he’s not a very nice Angel! And that’s all I’ll say…” In addition, two more pieces of concept art have debuted online showing the character with his wings extended and hidden and you can check it out below. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Rose Byrne will reprise their roles along with Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan Kodi Smit-McPhee and Lana Condor as young versions of Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee. Evan Peters is also expected to make a return appearance as Quicksilver with Oscar Isaac making his debut as the title villain, Apocalypse. The film is being written by Simon Kinberg from a treatment by Mike Dougherty, Dan Harris and Kinberg. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, cameras will start rolling on the next adventure in Montreal beginning in April. Once again under the direction of Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.

This is a great photo. I think Angel's outfit looks amazing and it's a lot better than the onw that Ben Foster wore in X-Men: The Last Stand. I'm glad they are bringing ANgel back because he does plays a key part in the comic storyline and I'm hoping they go with that storyline in the movie because I think it could work well. Everything I've heard and seen from this movie gets me excited and I cannot wait to see it.

Fox Searchlight has just released the trailer for their upcoming Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, the adaptation of Jesse Andrews’ 2012 bestseller that proved to be a standout at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, winning both Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. You can check out our own Edward Douglas’ very positive thoughts on the film right here and find the trailer in the player below! Blending comedy and drama, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl tells the story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life.  He even describes his constant companion Earl (RJ Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a ‘co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Olivia Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer – he slowly discovers how worthwhile the true bonds of friendship can be. Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon from a screenplay adapted by Andrews himself,  Me and Earl and the Dying Girl arrives in theaters on June 12.

This was a pretty powerful and emotional trailer. It reminds me a lot of The Fault in Our Stars, but ten times better. The film got a lot of praise at Sundance and some think that it is a lock to be nominated for Best Picture at next year's Oscars and might possibly win the award. Right now it's way too early to tell, but I think it has a good shot. I think the story is brilliant and I cannot wait to see it.
