4-20-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following three brand-new posters for the upcoming film, Universal Pictures has released the new trailer for the upcoming Jurassic World which you can check out below. Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters, Jurassic World arrives from Safety Not Guaranteed helmer Colin Trevorrow and offers a terrifying sci-fi adventure set 22 years after the events of Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 Michael Crichton adaption, Jurassic Park. According to Trevorrow, a huge part of what sparked his take on the blockbuster franchise was the image of a teenager texting, unimpressed with the T. Rex behind the glass in front of him. You can read more about Trevorrow’s thoughts on the film from earlier this year by clicking here. Jurassic World, which hits theaters on June 12, 2015, stars Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help, Spider-Man 3), Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Iron Man 3), Jake Johnson (Let’s Be Cops, “New Girl”), Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer), Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man), Vincent D’Onofrio (“Daredevil,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”), BD Wong (Jurassic Park, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Intouchables), Judy Greer (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Tomorrowland), Katie McGrath (NBC’s “Dracula,” “Merlin”), Lauren Lapkus (Blended, The To Do List) and Andy Buckley (Bridesmaids, The Other Guys).

This was an awesome trailer we got shown a lot more footage with a better understanding of the plot. It makes a lot of call back to the original film and in some ways I both like and dislike that. I dislike it because I want this film to be a film to stand on its own, but I like it because the franchise needs to reset itself and have some call backs to the original. I know the 90 second clip that was released a week and a half ago really set a let a lot of people off, but you can't judge a movie off of a 90 second clip. I'm looking forward to the film and I cannot wait to see it.

20th Century Fox production has revealed the brand-new trailer and poster for Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot which you can check out below. An origin story said to be inspired largely by the “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comics (the first arc of which was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar with Joe Kubert illustrating), Fantastic Four offers a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. “Marvel’s First Family” will include Whiplash‘s Miles Teller as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), “House of Cards” star Kate Mara as Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Fruitvale Station and Chronicle‘s Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and The Adventures of Tintin‘s Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (The Thing). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ Toby Kebbell will also star as Doctor Doom alongside Reg E. Cathey (“The Wire”) as as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. Fantastic Four features a screenplay by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and is set to hit the big screen August 7.

This was a fantastic trailer. People have been bashing this movie from the get go and I have been behind it and once everyone saw this trailer a lot of minds got changed. I think this film will be amazing. We got better knowledge of the plot and we got our first look at Doom and he looks pretty cool. I'm looking forward to this film so much more than I was and I can't wait to see it.

“Sometimes you have to say goodbye before you can say hello,” reads the tagline on the just-released poster for Cameron Crowe’s latest, the ensemble comedy-drama Aloha. Crowe, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker whose past credits include acclaimed films like Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, both writes and directs Aloha, which features a cast that includes four time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper (American Sniper, Silver Linings Playbook), fellow Oscar nominees Emma Stone (The Help, The Amazing Spider-Man), Bill Murray (Lost in Translation, St. Vincent) and Alec Baldwin (The Departed, “30 Rock”), Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris, Sherlock Holmes), John Krasinski (“The Office,” Brief Interviews with Hideous Men) and Danny McBride (This is the End, “Eastbound and Down”). In the film, a celebrated military contractor (Cooper) returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs – the US Space program in Honolulu, Hawaii – and reconnects with a long-ago love (McAdams) while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog (Stone) assigned to him. Produced by Scott Rudin and Crowe, Aloha opens in theaters on May 29.

Aloha

I think this is a pretty decent poster. I mean it's nothing special, but it pretty much shows the main players in the film and it looks like they are having fun in the sun. I'm a huge fan of Cameron Crowe and every film he does is just amazing and with the cast he has assembled for this film, this film has the chance to be really great.

Last month, it was revealed that Paramount was developing a “writer’s room” for their hit “Transformers” franchise with the goal of creating “multi-part Transformers sequels” and “potential spin-off films.” Today, Hasbro held their first quarter earnings call for 2015 where they spoke about the strategy behind this idea and when we might expect the next “Transformers” movie (via TFW2005). “Our plan right now with the studio and filmmakers, you may have read something about some writers being hired,” Brian Goldner President and CEO of Hasbro says. “We have in fact brought in [Akiva Goldsman[ to lead a group of writers to really create a strategic plan around Transformers – we think there’s any number of stories to be told. It’s a brand that’s been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the Transformers movie to happen in 2017. I Am Legend writer Akiva Goldsman is set to lead the “writer’s room” with Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura making up the other members of the development team. Goldman will reportedly not actually write any of the films but will provide oversight into the development of them as writers are hired. It was also previously reported that Michael Bay hopes to shoot the next film soon after completed work on his Benghazi drama 13 Hours,  When previously asked about coming back for more, Mark Wahlberg, who starred in the most recent entry Transformers: Age of Extinction said: “Yeah, I committed to doing a couple more. I can’t speak for Mr. Bay, but something tells me we’ll be on set soon.” “Age of Extinction” went on to gross over $1 billion at the global box office with all four films combined grossing over $3.7 billion.

This isn't surprising news. I mean look I hate the majority of the films (I actually like the first one), but these films make money so it makes sense to make more movies. I was hoping that Michael Bay wouldn't return to the franchise in any way, but apparently he's writing the new script. He may not direct it and I'd be ok with that. I'll have to see the film, but I hope its just better than the last three film.

With quite a few feature films based on the popular toy line in the works at the studio, Warner Bros. Pictures has today rebuilt its LEGO Movie franchise schedule, delaying LEGO’s Ninjago a full year, moving up The LEGO Batman Movie by several months, and shifting The LEGO Movie Sequel for release one week earlier than originally planned. Formerly set for release on September 23, 2016, LEGO’s Ninjago will now open September 22, 2017. That means that the next LEGO film to see release will be The LEGO Batman Movie. Formerly set for release on May 26, 2017, Will Arnett’s Batman minifig will now be back on the big screen February 10, 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel, then, previously set for a May 25, 2018 release, will open in theaters May 18, 2018. The new dates will see The LEGO Batman Movie opening opposite the 20th Century Fox drama The Mountain Between Us, while both LEGO’s Ninjago and The LEGO Movie Sequel are the first films to claim their respective dates. Assuming the vacated date of LEGO’s Ninjago will be another Warner Bros. animated film, Storks. On that September 23, 2016 date, Storks will have to contend with a still-unrevealed Sony Pictures Animation release. The original The LEGO Movie, released last year, was directed by Lord and Miller alongside Chris McKay and grossed an impressive $468 million at the worldwide box office. Another LEGO film, The Billion Brick Race, remains set for release on May 24, 2019. Of course, that may change down the line, so check back for updates as they become available.

All of this re-scheduling makes a lot of sense. I mean with Star Wars Episode VIII coming out on May 26th, 2017, Warner Bros. was smart enough to get away from the film because it will be a juggernaut. I have a feeling that the other films will move too once more movies get announced, but right now these are great dates for these films.
