5-6-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

A teaser poster for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar has been released and you can check it out below. Hitting theaters and IMAX on November 7, 2014, the sci-fi film stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, David Gyasi, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Timothée Chalamet, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine and Matt Damon.

Interstellar chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Against a black backdrop, the title "Interstellar" is written downward and ends above a horizon that depicts a silhouette of farm buildings. The title starts with "INTER" in white letters, and a white flare effect from the horizon upward is behind "STELLAR" in black letters.

This poster looks really good. It's a teaser poster so I wasn't expecting much. But honestly this film looks and sounds amazing and I honestly can't wait for it to come out later this year and I look for it to be a heavy Oscar contender.

Although the actor became set to headline the project earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Gerard Butler has dropped out of director Ericson Core's Point Break remake. He was to play Bodhi, the late Patrick Swayze's character in the original. Alcon Entertainment is developing the remake of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 action thriller. The new version of the film is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring.

No official reason has been given for Butler's departure, but he does have a busy upcoming slate. He'll reprise his Olympus Has Fallen role for the upcoming sequel, London Has Fallen and has plans to team with director Dean Devlin for the sci-fi actioner Geostorm. A replacement for the Bodhi role is expected to be announced shortly.Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are producing Point Break along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer, who also wrote the screenplay. RGM Media principal Devesh Chetty and investor John McMurrick, Chairman of Marloss Entertainment, will serve as executive producers.

I'm kind of disappointed to hear this news. Look was I looking forward to a Point Break remake no, but sense it's in the works I guess I have to accept it. Gerard Butler would have been a great replacement for the late Patrick Swayze and I'm sad to see him go and it'll be interesting to see who will replacement will be.

Although it's certainly no surprise given the immense popularity of the franchise, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger confirmed today during a Q2 Fiscal 2014 Earnings Conference Call that "at least three" Star Wars films are in development beyond the new trilogy of "Saga" chapters. Up until now, only two of these standalone projects were confirmed.

Referred to in the past as "origin story film[s]", these features are said to be targeting release dates that alternate with the Saga entries, suggesting that these three (presumably the first of many more) will arrive in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Although previous rumors have suggested that these adventures will follow Han Solo, Boba Fett and/or Yoda, nothing specific has as of yet been confirmed outside of Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg's involvement on the screenplay side.

J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII, meanwhile, is set to star John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow in addition to original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. It will open in wide release on December 18, 2015.

This isn't really shocking to hear. We've known since the announcement of Lucasfilm being bought by Disney that there were going to be stand-alone films now it's just time to play the waiting. I personally hope for a young Han Solo film and Yoda film to bridge the gap between Episode 3 and Episode 5. I'm not really for sure what I would want for the third film but I can't wait to see these films along with the new trilogy.

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures have released the new trailer for Tammy which you can check out below. Directed by Ben Falcone and starring Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Gary Cole, Mark Duplass, Toni Collette, Nat Faxon, Dan Aykroyd and Kathy Bates.

In the July 2 release, Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) is having a bad day. She's totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house. It's time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she's broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Susan Sarandon), is her only option—with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

This film looks absolutely hilarious. Melissa McCarthy is one of the best comics around and this looks like her best outing yet. I just honestly hope that the film is better than Identity Thief because that film was atrocious and I hope it is more like The Heat.

Last year, Universal Pictures' The Mummy lost formerly attached director Len Wiseman (Underworld) due to scheduling conflicts. He was soon replaced by Mama helmer Andres Muschietti, but The Wrap is now reporting that Muschietti has also departed the franchise reboot, this time due to creative differences. The outlet reports that Muschietti wanted a darker take on the property than the family-friendly film that Universal now has in mind.

Scripted by Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts, The Mummy is a reboot of the Universal franchise, which dates back more than eight decades. The studio originally released The Mummy in 1932 and followed it with four sequels between then and 1944, including The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Curse. In 1955, the studio spoofed the property with Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy and then left the franchise dormant until a big screen reboot in 1999. Directed by Stephen Sommers, the new The Mummy was followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.

This is bad news for the film. I mean it's ok to lose one director but when you lose a second director then there has to be serious problems. Look I honestly would like a darker tale on The Mummy and I believe that it could work out very well. If the studio wants to stay true to the 1932 film then make it dark and scary like it's supposed to be.
