5-27-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

With X-Men: Days of Future Past currently proving its massive box office draw, 20th Century Fox is already getting things ready to prepare for the next film, X-Men: Apocalypse, set to hit the big screen May 27, 2016. In a conversation with The Daily Beast, producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg dropped an interesting detail about the planned eighth entry in Fox's big screen X-Universe, claiming that it, too, would feature "original" cast members. "It will focus primarily on the 'First Class' cast," he says, "but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too."

I really glad to hear this news. Now would I have liked to have seen a film based around the original cast again yes, but Fox has to look towards the future and this is the way to go. If you have seen X-Men: Days of Future Past then you know one older cast member that will be in the X-Men: Apocalypse. But overall I'm excited to hear the news.

Although it sounded last week like Gravity and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban helmer Alfonso Cuaron was planning on returning to the Wizarding World for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Global Post today has an update straight from Cuaron himself who now reveals that he'll be passing on the director's chair this time around. "I have a lot of love for that universe," Cuaron says, "and I tremendously admire J.K. Rowling, but today, for the present, projects based around lots of visual effects don't attract me. I'm coming out of a five-year process of doing visual effects and now I sort of want to clean my palate of that a little bit."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, based on J.K. Rowling's world of witches and wizards and inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, will follow the adventures of the book's fictitious author, Newt Scamander. The first in a planned trilogy set in the Wizarding World, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted "Harry Potter" fans. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the "Harry Potter" books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry's gets underway. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set for release on November 18, 2016.

I'm a little disappointed in the news. I love Cuaron's work (if you haven't seen Children of Men go watch it now) but I understand what he's  saying. Look he's been doing a lot of visually stunning films over the past few years and I can see why he wants to take a break from it. He''l be back he just doesn't want to get burnt out on it to the point where he''l never do one again.

Plans for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight are back on track, according to a story today at Showbiz 411. They report that the Django Unchained helmer is currently working on a rewrite of the western and has plans to put it before cameras this November with the same cast from the screenplay's recent live-reading. That's Zoe Bell, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, James Remar, Tim Roth, Kurt Russell and Amber Tamblyn.

Although confirmation of the involvement of the above talent is still likely some time off, it appears that Christoph Waltz (who was rumored in January to have had a part written specifically for him) will not be appearing. He won Academy Awards for his performances in both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.

This is great news. I know the script was leaked and if I was Tarantino I would be pissed off as well. But now that things have cooled down I'm glad to see the project back on track. Tarantino is my favorite director of all-time and I'm really excited for this film.

Johnny Depp has plans to play one of history's most famous magicians. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Depp will take on the role of Harry Houdini in Lionsgate's upcoming The Secret Life of Houdini, to be directed by Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest, RED 2).

First announced in 2009, the big screen project is to be based on the 2006 book of the same name by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. Published in 2006, it is officially described as follows: Since his death eighty-eight years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and bestselling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth. Drawing from millions of pages of research, they describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy.

"The Secret Life of Houdini" traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame—his legacy later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

Seriously? Look I'm all for a Houdini film, but not with Johnny Depp. His career has really gone south and Hasn't really had a great film since Sweeney Todd. If he makes this film as a cooky character then he'll have another bomb on his hands, but if he takes it serious and actually tries then the film will be great.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the indie hit of 2002, has a sequel in the works. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the original, will return alongside star John Corbett for a story that catches up on on Toula and Ian more than a decade into their marriage. Currently without an official title or an attached director, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is said to revolve around a new wedding that reunites the extended family of the original.

I'm not surprised about this news. I absolutely loved My Big Fat Greek Weeding and I'm glad we are getting a sequel. Now so may say that the film is to little to late, but in all honesty this is the right amount of time to revisit the characters and how the marriage has gone over the past 12 years.
