My Review of The Shape of Water

So I recently watched The Shape of Water and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Elisa (played by Sally Hawkins) is a mute, isolated woman who works as a cleaning lady in a hidden, high-security government laboratory in 1962 Baltimore. Her life changes forever when she discovers the lab's classified secret -- a mysterious, scaled creature from South America that lives in a water tank. As Elisa develops a unique bond with her new friend, she soon learns that its fate and very survival lies in the hands of a hostile government agent (played by Michael Shannon) and a marine biologist (played by Richard Jenkins).

This is an absolutely fascinating and gorgeous film. One of the big things about Guillermo del Toro is the fact that he wants to go big and be bold with every film and have a high productions value and often times it doesn't pay off, but sometimes they often do and this is one of those times. It's a film that will make you feel so many different emotions when you see certain performances from characters and it really just helps enthrall you into the story Del Toro is telling. Sally Hawkins gives the best performance if her career and she doesn't all while being a mute and just the way she shows her emotions without words is one of the remarkable things to see. Also both Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins give remarkable performances and each play their roles to perfection on both sides of the spectrum. What Del Toro does best in the film is that he is able to show you both sides of the argument on how to handle the creature and for you as an audience member to really toe the line on what you would do if you were in the situation. With being said Del Toro has given us his best film to date and it's a film that will get him nominated for his first Oscar for Best Director and the film itself will receive a lot of attention. One things that does hurt the film is that it brings in a subplot that involves Russians that doesn't fit the narrative and really took time away from Sally Hawkins's character and growing the relationship with the creature even more. Overall this is an absolutely stunning an gorgeous film that really makes you apprecite filmmaking and they are able to tell stories like this. I give The Shape of Water a 9 out of 10.
