My Review of Darkest Hour

So I recently watched Darkest Hour and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

A thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Played by Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

This is a truly great look at one of the greatest world leaders of all-time. Winston Churchill is one of those figures in history that we see as this great leader and a guy who did all of these magnificent things, but in the film we dive deeper into how he made those decisions and how much pressure was on him at the time with World War II happening in his backyard. You begin to understand him more and that's helped by the performance of Gary Oldman. He does such a wonderful job of becoming Churchill and he's almost unrecognizable in the role. The passion and energy in the role are just brought to a whole new level and it's a role that will be studied by film students for years to come and it's a performance that will get Oldman nominated at The Oscars and possibly get him his first Oscar win. The supporting cast is great in the film as well as they each bring a different dynamic into how they were an impact in Churchill's life. The biggest thing for this film is that it plays out a lot like the film Lincoln in the sense that it does mainly focus one particular event instead of the whole war in general. Also it's a film that really dives deep into World War II history and it may be boring for those that really don't want to know the deeper meaning behind certain decisions and battles in the war. Overall the film is solid, but it does follow the same basic plot line as a lot of recent bio-pics, but the performance of Oldman is enough for you to check the film out. I give Darkest Hour a 9 out of 10.
