Weekend Movie News 9-19-14 to 9-21-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Deadline reports that due to his schedule for the upcoming Star Trek 3, executive producer Roberto Orci has had to drop out of Lionsgate and Saban's upcoming big screen reboot of the Power Rangers. Orci recently completed the first draft of Star Trek 3 with co-writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne which he will also direct. No release date is currently set for that film, but the expectation is that the new film will land in theaters in 2016, just in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) will script the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers, which is described as a modern reinvention of the long-running franchise. In it, a group of ordinary high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. It is currently set for release on July 22, 2016.

This isn't really surprising. Once it was announced that Orci was directing star Trek 3, I knew it would only be a matter of time before this happened. I understand why he did it simply because he's having to hurry to get Star Trek 3 ready by a possible 2016 release date and doing that plus producing this film would be a lot for him. I'm still really looking forward to the film mainly because of the writers  and I hope that the studio can get someone really great to replace him.

On The Talkhouse podcast, Terry Gilliam and Rian Johnson had a conversation mostly to talk about The Zero Theorem, but eventually Gilliam turns things around and asks Johnson what he's working on, which we all know is a little franchise movie, currently dubbed Star Wars Episode VIII. When Gilliam learns what Johnson is doing, he asks what it feels like to take over something that was made famous by another filmmaker, to which Johnson responds: "I'm just starting into it, but so far, honestly, it's the most fun I've ever had writing. It’s just joyous. But also for me personally, I grew up not just watching those movies but playing with those toys, so as a little kid, the first movies I was making in my head were set in this world. A big part of it is that direct connection, almost like an automatic jacking back into childhood in a weird way. But I don't know, ask me again in a few years and we'll be able to talk about that."

"I'm figuring it out as I go," Johnson told him. "I'm kind of dancing on top of the avalanche a little bit. I'll have more perspective on it in a while. It's a balance of remembering what really inspires you about it, but I think you can probably go to the wrong place by feeling too responsible to it. You have to keep your head loose enough to tell a story you care about." "It's a balance," Johnson explains. "That's been the great thing. Kathy (Kennedy) and her whole creative team have been just so insistent that all the filmmakers they're hiring for these new movies, 'We want you to take it and turn it into something that you really care about.' We'll see how the process plays out, but so far, that's a big part of why I'm in it, because that seems to be their attitude towards it. It's really exciting."

I really like these comments from Johnson. It's nice to see someone who not only is an amazing filmmaker, but a fan of the franchise directing the film. So far Disney has done an excellent job getting talented directors who are fans of the franchise (JJ Abrams for Star Wars Episode VII and Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank for two separate Star wars spin-off films). I'm excited for Episode VII, but I'm really looking forward to Episode VIII as well.

Warner Bros. and DC entertainment have been planning a feature film based on the legendary “Task Force X," better known as Suicide Squad, for many years. Now it seems it might be close to finally happening as The Hollywood Reporter brings word this afternoon that End of Watch and Fury director David Ayer is circling the big screen adaptation of the villains-turned-heroes tale.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and The Jungle Book scribe Justin Marks was previously attached to write a script for the film, but that was reportedly put on the back burner following WB's interest in developing the upcoming Justice League film.

Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the team has included countless DC villains among its ranks, including Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bane, Killer Frost, Poison Ivy, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn. The CW's "Arrow" introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team.

This is awesome news to hear! I'm a huge fan of the Suicide Squad and to get the chance to see them on the big screen will be amazing. One of the key members of the group (Deathstroke) is my top 5 favorite comic book villains of all-time. Arrow did a great job of portraying Deathstroke and the suicide Squad separately last season (Deathstroke was the main villain of last season with the Suicide Squad being apart of a couple of episodes), but I'm really excited to see them on the big screen. I'm also proud that Warner Bros./DC has finally grown a pair to announce smaller movies like this to help them build their cinematic universe.

Columbia Pictures has released the new Red Band trailer for The Interview, the Christmas release starring James Franco, Seth Rogen, Lizzy Caplan and Randall Park. In the action-comedy, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show "Skylark Tonight." When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.

This trailer is absolutely hilarious. It'll be fun seeing Franco and Rogen on screen togehter again. This film has caused a lot of controversy (and rightfully so), but in honesty the publicity the film is getting will help it out in the long run. I'm really excited for the film and I cannot wait to see it.

Casting continues today for Magic Mike XXL, the upcoming sequel to Steven Soderbergh's 2012 hit. According to Deadline, Amber Heard is the latest to claim a (reportedly major) role opposite Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Andie MacDowell and Jada Pinkett Smith. Directed by Greg Jacobs, Magic Mike XXL features a screenplay by Reid Carolin and Tatum. The sequel plot will revolve around our favorite male exotic dancers going to a strippers' convention, and follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money. Magic Mike XXL is set to hit theaters July 1, 2015.

This is really good casting. Amber Heard is a really talented actress and I don't thiink that shes really had her shot to prove it and this movie could do it for her. From the looks of it she'll probably be the main love interest for the film. Look I'll admit that I really liked Magic Mike and I'm really looking forward to this film.
