9-17-14/9-18-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

MGM and Paramount's upcoming Timur Bekmambetov-directed remake of Ben-Hur has cast "Boardwalk Empire" star Jack Huston in the title role. Deadline has the news, reporting that Huston will join Morgan Freeman, who signed on for the project last week. Set for a release on February 26, 2016, the new take on Ben-Hur was originally scripted by Keith Clarke (The Way Back), with revisions by Academy Award-winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). It is based on Lew Wallace's 1880 epic novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of The Christ." The film is said to return to the heart of the epic novel with a focus on the nature of faith. The story follows a falsely-accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him. Both must come to choose between retribution or forgiveness.

This is really surprising to hear. There were talks that Tom Hiddelston was going to play the title character and I thought he would have been perfect for the role. I'm not really that excited to hear the name Jack Huston. I haven't watched Boardwalk Empire, but I have heard that he is pretty darn good in the show. maybe he can bring that talent to the film and maybe it will be good.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new trailer for director David Dobkin's The Judge which you can watch below. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shephard, Billy Bob Thornton, Ken Howard, Emma Tremblay, Balthazar Getty, David Krumholtz, Sarah Lancaster, Grace Zabriskie and Denis O'Hare, The Judge stars Downey as big city lawyer Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home where his estranged father, the town’s judge (Duvall), is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before. The Judge opens in theaters October 10, 2014.

I really like this trailer. This trailer is very different than the first one. The first one is dark and depressing, but this one looks a little more upbeat but with more emotion. The film looks really good and the star-studded cast really makes the film one to watch. I'm really looking forward to the film.

Talk of a third "Ghostbusters" film has been going on for decades now, and very recently the idea of a reboot was put out into the world when it was revealed that The Heat director Paul Feig was the top choice for an all-female reboot of the series. Speaking in London (via The Belfast Telegraph), series co-creator Dan Aykroyd talked about what kind of decisions are being made about the series which he seems to think could be transformed into mega franchise not unlike "The Avengers." "My whole thinking on Ghostbusters now is it's beyond just a sequel, a prequel, another movie, another TV Show. I'm thinking now, what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What's Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox? Everybody, all of us on the team there now, the executives, the creatives, myself, Ivan (Reitman), we're thinking more in terms of what do we build this thing into in the next ten years? Just not another movie or another TV show, but what's the totality of it? What's the whole mythology from the beginning of their lives to the end of their lives? Ghostbusters at 9-years-old, Ghostbusters in high school."

He was also asked about the idea of the all-female Ghostbusters female, to which he replied: "It's like taking on the model of Marvel, that type of thing, where you take all the elements that were in these movies and you put them out there as different ideas, so we'll see. I think a third movie with females or a fourth movie with females is definitely a possibility. Again though, we need to write it."

Aykroyd's comments are a little ambitious. Don't get me wrong it's great to have this idea, but it could be too much at once. I honestly don't think that a Ghostbuster cinematic universe would actually go over well. Let's try to get a Ghostbusters sequel/reboot off the ground and hope it has some success before making huge plane.

Just a few hours after star Ryan Reynolds opened up about the reaction to the Deadpool leaked footage, 20th Century Fox has announced they are moving forward with the film and have given it a February 12, 2016 release date, just three months before the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Ryan Reynolds is expected to star with director Tim Miller at the helm and a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

In addition, Fox has shuffled a few more release dates, moving the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin’s Creed off of its August 7, 2015 release. It is now without a release date. The upcoming reboot of The Fantastic Four, from Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan, has also moved from its June 19, 2015 release to the just vacated August 7. Finally, the John Green adaptation Paper Towns has moved from July 31, 2015 to more than a month earlier on June 19.

This news is possibly the best news since Ben Affleck was cast as Batman. I'm a fan of the Deadpool character and me and a bunch of my close friends have been dying for a Deadpool film. After the awful interpretation of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine who was played by Ryan Reynolds (he had nothing to do with how horrible the character was). Now the big question is what will it be rated. If you know the character he kinda has a fowl-mouth and he is pretty violent. If it's like the test footage that was released a month ago then the film has a chance to be amazing.

As for the other news, it's not really looking good for Assassin's Creed film. This is the second time the film has been moved back so it might be in trouble. Also Fantastic Four getting moved back may be a blessing in disguise. I say that because it's opening exactly one year after Guardians of the Galaxy and it's going to go up against Goosebumps! which will have a different audience so it could catch lightning in a bottle.

It's been a busy week of casting for MGM and Paramount's upcoming Timur Bekmambetov-directed remake of Ben-Hur. Following word last night of "Boardwalk Empire" star Jack Huston landing the title role, comes word, via Variety, that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Toby Kebbell is eyeing the antagonistic role of Messala. If he signs on, he'll also join Morgan Freeman in the cast.

This is awesome casting. Toby Kebbell is an amazing actor and he's one of the best at motion capture. Now he probably won't be doing mo-cap, but it'll be awesome to see him on screen and showcasing his talent. This movie is shaping up to be really good and I can't wait to see the film.

The trailer is now online for director Tim Burton's upcoming Big Eyes! Check it out in the player below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies. Big Eyes, set for release on December 25, stars Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman and Terence Stamp, and offers a biopic of artist Margaret Keane, the painter whose distinctive creations featuring big-eyed children became one of art's first mass-market success stories in the 1950s. Big Eyes covers Keane's personal awakening at the onset of the feminist movement, leading to a lawsuit she filed against her husband Walter, who claimed credit for her works. He lived the high life while she toiled in relative anonymity in the Bay Area.

This is a pretty cool trailer. It's really interesting to see art history and this film has a really talented cast. This film will attract a lot of attention come Oscar season and this could be the resurgence that Tim Burton needs to get his career back on track.
