Weekend Movie News 6-26-15 to 6-28-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

An international trailer for Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Ant-Man has made its way online and features some brand-new footage from the July 17 release! In addition, a few more photos have been released which you can check out in the gallery below. Also, if you want to learn more about Ant-Man’s history, be sure to check out Ant-Man: Origins and Evolutions! Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd (This is 40, They Came Together), Evangeline Lilly (“LOST,” The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) and Michael Douglas (The Game, And So It Goes) and brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Also starring are Corey Stoll (“The Strain,” “House of Cards”), Judy Greer (“Archer,” Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Martin Donovan (Inherent Vice, Insomnia), Wood Harris (Dredd, Remember the Titans), John Slattery (“Mad Men,” Iron Man 2), Gregg Turkington (“Gravity Falls,” The Comedy), and Abby Ryder Fortson (“Togetherness,” “The Whispers”), Ant-Man features a script by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Paul Rudd and Adam McKay and is directed by Peyton Reed.

This was a pretty cool trailer. One reason why I loved it is because of the Japanese narration and that's probably the hardest I've laughed in a while. As for the trailer I really liked seeing the new scenes and it didn't give away too much other than an important line that helps fans recognize that this is in the MCU. So the buzz on the movie is amazing and I'm getting really excited to see the film. July 17th can honestly can't get here any quicker.

Seems like Tyrese Gibson is taking a page from his fellow Furious 7 star Vin Diesel and is now teasing fans on social media about a potential role in a comic book movie, namely as Green Lantern in the DC Cinematic Universe with this Instagram post:

Not only is that a fan depiction of Gibson as John Stewart, but it’s him paired alongside fan art of Chris Pine as Hal Jordan. This lines up with recent rumors that say Pine negotiating to play Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman was, in fact, a smokescreen to block the fact that Warner Bros. wants him as Green Lantern, and that there will be more than one central Lantern. “There are certain things I can’t speak on,” Tyrese told Entertainment Tonight. “But I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.” Gibson has played supporting roles as soldier Robert Epps in Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise as well as the part of Roman Pearce in four of the seven Fast & Furious movies, including the most recent seventh entry which has brought in over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. “Listen, these muscles are here and they’re ready to be used,” he pitched. “There are lot of people, domestically and internationally, who’s got love with your boy. I’m coming into this thing with some fans and some box office receipts behind my name and I say that proudly and humbly. I just think I deserve a shot at suiting up and becoming the Green Lantern.” Gibson would not be the first recording artist-turned-actor to be considered for the role of John Stewart, as hip hop star Common was cast in 2007 for George Miller’s aborted Justice League: Mortal film. So can we look forward to seeing Gibson onstage at Hall H for Comic-Con International next month? “You never know,” Tyrese said. “I might be there on the other side of an announcement. You never know.” While it is unknown if any members of the Green Lantern Corps will make an appearance in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, they will play a central role in director Zack Snyder’s two-part Justice League film, part one of which is scheduled to open on November 10, 2017 with part two following on June 14, 2019, with a solo Green Lantern movie the following year.

This is a pretty interesting post. Now grated it is fan art and it has nothing to do Warner Bros. and a decision still hasn't been made (that we know of), but it is still pretty cool to see. I personally think that Tyrese Gibson is a great choice to play the John Stewart version of Green Lantern and the same goes for Chris Pine playing the Hal Jordan version. I think these two can work well together on screen and they would be terrific choices. Like Tyrese said we may end up finding out at Comic-Con in two weeks becasue from everything I've heard from the Ace Scooper Umberto Gonzalez aka El Mayimbe from Heroichollywood.com (which you should definitely check out) DC is going to be bringing out the big guns and will pretty much announce everything that needs to be announced including who will be the Green Lantern(s). All we can do as of now though is wait.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has won a bidding war for BuzzFeed author Ken Bensinger’s new chronicle of the FIFA sports corruption scandal “Houses of Deceit,” with Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (Argo, Good Will Hunting) lined up to produce and director Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) behind the camera. Bensinger’s book chronicles the American side of the scandal, at the center of which is Chuck Blazer, a soccer executive who along with other FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Executive Committee members accepted bribes from Moroccan and South African officials to gain World Cup hosting privileges in 1998 and 2010. Blazer helped popularize the sport in the U.S. but also became known for taking a large percentage of sponsorship and TV money and living a life of extreme excess, all the while informing on other executives for the FBI. Having recently directed Affleck in the Warner Bros. thriller The Accountant, O’Connor will co-write the screenplay with frequent collaborator Anthony Tambakis. There is no word on who will take the juicy role of Blazer in the film, though the man’s girth and big white beard will no doubt preclude Affleck from taking the part, especially given his duties as Batman in the DC Cinematic Universe. Guymon Casady and Darin Friedman of Entertainment 360 are also producing the film along with Affleck’s Pearl Street Films partner Matt Damon. Meanwhile, the Tim Roth-led film about the founding of FIFA (funded by FIFA to the tune of roughly $30 million), titled United Passions, recently became another black mark on the organization, grossing a beyond-embarrassing $918 dollars domestically and less than $200,000 worldwide. O’Connor’s next film, the Natalie Portman-led western Jane Got a Gun, will open on September 4, while The Accountant (currently in post-production) is set for a January 29, 2016 bow. Affleck will be seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice two months later on March 25 and is currently in pre-production on his next directorial outing, Live By Night, which is in line for an October 7, 2016 release.

This is a great choice. Now I love the decision of bringing on Ben Affleck as a producer because the last film he produced won Best Picture at The Oscars (i.e. Argo). On the other hand I think he should be directing the film becasue he is equally talented as a director. Don't get me wrong Gavin O'Connor is a tremendous director, but I think Ben Affleck would've been a better choice to direct the film. I think Affleck will end up choosing to star in the film himself and long time ago that would've be a deathwish, but he is now a proven actor and I think this movie is a good fit for him he does star in the film. The film sounds really great and I can't wait to see it on the big screen.

Though production on the third Star Trek film (possibly titled “Star Trek Beyond”) just began this week, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Paramount Pictures is already looking toward the future of the franchise. Having renegotiated their contracts for the third film, stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have been given options for a fourth “Star Trek,” though they are the only members of the principal cast given the option at this time. Co-stars Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho reportedly did not sign sequel options, though this does not preclude them from signing a new deal should a fourth film materialize. Star Trek 3 is set to feature the return of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, along with Idris Elba as the film’s villain and Sofia Boutella in a mystery role. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Justin Lin, four-time The Fast and the Furious director, is set to direct from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Paramount Pictures has Star Trek 3 scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release, which happens to be exactly two months to the day before the franchise’s 50th Anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap,” in which the crew of the Enterprise encounters a deadly shapeshifting salt vampire, introduced the world to “Star Trek” on September 8, 1966.

This is great news to hear. What this news basically means is that these moved faster through negotiations than the others and now that these two are on board Paramount can begin moving forward with the rest of the cast. Plus a fourth film may not even happen, but this reassures that if it does then these two are signed on to come back for a fourth film. Marvel has been doing this for years and to be honest just about every studio is doing it so this is nothing new. I personally hope that if a fourth film happens then the rest of the cast comes back becasue this cast already has a strong bond and I would hate to see it go away.

Luc Besson, along with his frequent screenwriting partner Robert Mark Kamen, have formed their own mini-empire with formula action series like Taken and The Transporter, but now that those two franchises have more or less run their course (the Jason Statham-less Transporter Refueled seems unlikely to set the world on fire), Besson’s EuropaCorp is looking to make little franchise babies out of two of their recent female-led shoot ‘em ups Lucy and Colombiana. This surprising news comes from Allocine (via The Playlist), who got the extensive roster of upcoming EuropaCorp productions, which included Lucy 2 and Colombiana 2 as being “In Development.” It is surprising because 2014’s Lucy ends in such a way that leaves very little room for a conventional sequel, with *spoiler warning* Scarlett Johansson’s title character becoming a non-corporeal omniscient god-like force within the computer realm. *end spoilers* Even Besson admitted to the Taiwanese press last summer, “I don’t see how we can do [a sequel]. It’s not made for that. If I find something good enough, maybe I will, but for now I don’t even think about it.” Despite Besson’s best artistic intentions, Lucy went on to gross an astounding $458 million on a $40 million budget, which pretty much is the universe telling the filmmaker at gunpoint that he’s making a sequel. Just to put it into context, the Will Smith-led threequel MIB 3 took in $624 million on a $225 million budget. Which one sounds more profitable? If Besson can crack a decent (or decent enough) script, Johansson should earn a healthy payday. On the other end of the spectrum is Colombiana, which at only $60 million worldwide on a $40 million budget probably only barely eked out a profit after home video, cable and other ancillary outlets. The female assassin film scored poor reviews as well, despite good notices for star Zoe Saldana, so one could speculate that her upcoming run in James Cameron’s Avatar sequels and currently-filming Star Trek 3 will boost her international profile enough to make a sequel a safe bet.  The EuropaCorp roster also includes two other promising-sounding action flicks in the Kamen-penned kung-fu epic Warrior’s Gate, starring Dave Bautista, as well as the Besson-helmed French comic book adaptation Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (listed simply as “Valerian”).

This is pretty surprising news to hear. On the Colombiana side of things it's been awhile since I've watched the film so I can't honestly remember anything about it so I can't really talk about the film or its sequel. As for Lucy the story did end in a way that it really doesn't need a sequel. Now it did make a big profit so it is understandable on a money standpoint. I personally didn't like Lucy, but some people did and hopefully the sequel can impress me more.
