Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

Walt Disney Animation Studios has debuted the first teaser trailer from their animated feature Zootopia, which you can watch below. The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. The comedy-adventure is directed by Byron Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph, “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”). Zootopia opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.
This was a really nice teaser. This is one of Disney's more unknown and obscure films to date, but with the way Disney Animation (not Pixar) has put out good quality films the past three years (2012- Wreck-It-Ralph, 2013- Frozen and 2014- Big Hero 6) I think this film can be just as good as those films. The added plus that the film comes out my birthday doesn't gauge my excitement, but it doesn't hurt either.
A sequel to Village Roadshow’s The Equalizer is on the way. Columbia Pictures has officially set a 2017 release date for the follow up to director Antoine Fuqua’s 2014 adaptation of the 1980s television series. The Equalizer 2 will hit the big screen September 29, 2017. That’s almost exactly three years after the first film opened. In the first film, Denzel Washington stars as McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer. Washington should definitely be returning for The Equalizer 2, although no director or additional cast has, as of yet, been confirmed. Washington is currently reteaming with Fuqua, however, for The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the John Sturges western classic that, in turn, was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. The Equalizer 2 is the first film to claim that September 29, 2017 date.
This isn't surprising news to hear. The first film made over $192 million on a $55 million dollar budget so this is a no-brainer for the studio. I would think that both Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua will return, but it's untelling at the current moment. I wasn't a big fan of the tv show, but I enjoyed the film and I'm excited to see how the sequel builds on what the first film created.
The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that Academy Award-winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming feature The Hateful Eight will premiere in 70mm on December 25, 2015. The exclusive 2-week roadshow opening will be featured in glorious 70mm in select theaters nationwide. Following the 2-week engagement, the film will open with a theatrical digital release nationwide on January 8, 2016, while continuing to be shown in 70mm as well. TWC and Tarantino’s presentation of The Hateful Eight will mark the widest 70mm release that the industry has seen in over twenty years. In 2012, TWC distributed Paul Thomas Anderson’s acclaimed film The Master in this rare but celebrated shooting format. Beloved by filmmakers and cinephiles for its wide-scope and high-resolution image quality, 70mm stock captures nearly twice the landscape of the more common 35mm and digital styles. Because of its unique quality and its importance to the art of filmmaking, Quentin, TWC, and a number of other major Hollywood directors and studios have negotiated deals with Kodak to continue production of 70mm and other film formats despite their higher costs and complexity of use. Commented TWC President of Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment Erik Lomis: “Our long relationship with Quentin Tarantino is one of the cornerstones of this company, so it’s incredibly special to us to be releasing his latest film in such a spectacular way on 70mm – we can’t think of a finer Christmas gift to be giving movie lovers and Tarantino fans this year.”
The lead cast for The Hateful Eight will include: Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained), Kurt Russell (Escape From New York), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle), Walton Goggins (“Justified”), Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs), Michael Madsen (Kill Bill), and Bruce Dern (Nebraska). Written and directed by Tarantino, The Hateful Eight is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Georgia Kacandes are executive producing, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producing. In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all...
This is great news to hear on both parts. One it's great to hear that Tarantino is getting the opportunity to present in his film in this format because he his a big supporter of using film instead of going digital (If you don't know the difference check out the documentary Side by Side). I'm also glad to hear that the film will get it's Christmas release date and that makes for a fun Christmas weekend with The Hateful Eight going up against The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. It does however mean that a lot of people won't get to see it until early 2016, but with the Christmas date it will still be eligible for next year's Oscars. for those that don't know I am a huge fan of Tarantino and every film he makes is nothing, but a masterpiece and I think this one can one of his best yet.
Gramercy Pictures has just announced that their upcoming action sequel London Has Fallen will be hitting theaters a little later than originally planned. Although the Olympus Has Fallen follow-up had set an October 2 release date, the film will now arrive on the big screen January 22, 2016. The move comes on the heels of 20th Century Fox’s recent decision to release Ridley Scott’s The Martian on October 2, more than a month earlier than it was initially scheduled. Directed by Babak Najafi from a script by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt, Christian Gudegast, and Chad St. John, London Has Fallen is a sequel to director Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen, which earned $161 million worldwide during its theatrical release in 2013. The sequel stars Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell, Robert Forster, Jackie Earle Haley, Charlotte Riley, Sean O’Bryan, Alon Aboutboul and Waleed Zuaiter. London Has Fallen begins after the British Prime Minister passes away. His funeral then becomes a target of a terrorist organization to destroy some of the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. The only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of the President of the United States (Eckhart) and his formidable Secret Service head (Butler), and an English MI-6 agent (Riley) who rightly trusts no one. The new release date will have London Has Fallen facing off against the action adventure Criminal (starring Gary Oldman, Ryan Reynolds, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner, Alice Eve and Gal Gadot), director Kevin Reynold’s Risen (starring Tom Felton, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Firth and Cliff Curtis) and the horror thriller The Boy (starring Lauren Cohan, Jim Norton, Diana Hardcastle, Ben Robson, Rupert Evans and James Russell).
This isn't surprising news to hear. The Martian is going to be a specticle and London Has Fallen will probably get demolished at the box office. I am concerned that they decided to move back all the way to January 2016. The dates I think they could've compete on in 2015 would be September 11th and October 30th. I could probably understand not using September 11th, but the Halloween date is open for film like this to do pretty well at the box office. The January 22nd release date is pretty crowded, but the film could very well succeed and we'll just have to wait and see.
Amy Poehler (Inside Out) is in negotiations to join Will Ferrell in New Line comedy The House, reports Variety. The two previously worked together on Blades of Glory. Ferrell is also producing the film, scripted by the Neighbors pair of Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. Cohen is also attached to helm, marking his feature film directing debut. The House is said to follow Ferrell’s character and his wife (Poehler) who, after losing their daughter’s college fund, decide that they can earn some money back by opening an illegal casino in their basement. In addition to Ferrell, Adam McKay will produce The House through their Gary Sanchez Productions. Good Universe is also producing with Jessica Elbaum and Chris Henchy set to serve as executive producers. Richard Brener, Sam Brown and Michael Disco, meanwhile, will oversee for New Line. The House will shoot this August, aiming for a likely 2016 release.
This is terrific casting. Amy Poehler is not only one of the funniest females, but one of the funniest actors working in Hollywood today. I think teaming her up with Will Ferrell is a terrific idea and this could end up one of the funniest films of this decade. The plot sounds really interesting and I can't wait to check it out.
