Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

It’s official! Academy Award-winning actor Eddie Redmayne has been cast as Newt Scamander in Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-anticipated wizarding world adventure Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “Eddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today’s most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors,” says Silverman. “We are thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable performance as Newt Scamander, the central character in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.'” Redmayne will play J.K. Rowling’s creation, Newt Scamander, the Wizarding World’s preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures, ultimately leading to his penning the Hogwarts School textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Making her screenwriting debut on the film, Rowling has developed the character of Scamander and his primer — taken from her globally beloved Harry Potter series — to further explore the unique wizarding world she has crafted in print and bring it to life on screen. David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films is helming the new film. “Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity,” he says. “I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in J.K. Rowling’s wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way.” The film is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster Harry Potter features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise. Eddie Redmayne won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2014 biopic The Theory of Everything. His portrayal of Stephen Hawking in that film also brought him Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards. In 2012, Redmayne starred as Marius in Tom Hooper’s screen adaptation of the hit musical Les Misérables, with Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. In 2010, Redmayne won a Tony Award for his performance in “Red,” which marked his Broadway debut. On screen, he next stars in Hooper’s true-life drama The Danish Girl, due out this November. Warner Bros. Pictures has slated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.
This is fantastic casting. I always say it's never wrong to hire talent and getting an Academy Award winning actor to headline your film is not a bad idea. It makes a lot of sense because he is British and he is a talented actor (which every Harry Potter film has had a great cast). I think he'll do a great job in the role and I can't wait to see what he does with the role and film.
A Big Trouble in Little China remake is on the way today with The Wrap reporting that San Andreas star Dwayne Johnson will headline as Jack Burton, the role iconically played by Kurt Russell in the 1986 original. Directed by John Carpenter, the original Big Trouble in Little China was scripted by Gary Goldman and David Z. Weinstein, who envisioned the story as a period western. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai‘s W.D. Richter was brought in to update the story to present day. It ultimately ended up following Burton, an American trucker who, after paying a visit to his friend in San Francisco’s Chinatown, finds himself drawn into a supernatural showdown with the forces of evil. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, best known for writing X-Men: First Class, will develop the script for the new film, which will be produced by Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Johnson himself. According to the outlet, the original film is one of Johnson’s all-time favorites. Johnson headlines San Andreas, in theaters now, opposite Alexandra Daddario, Paul Giamatti and Carla Gugino. Directed by Brad Peyton, the film opened at number one this past weekend and has already grossed more than $114 million worldwide.
This is not a surprise to hear and this is great casting. Look every film that you know and love will eventually get remade and this one is no surprise. I also really love the casting of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson because as I've said before he is the number 1 action star in the world and putting him in this remake is a really brilliant idea. I'm a fan of the original film and I can't wait to see an updated vision of the film.
Lionsgate has debuted a new teaser poster for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 teasing the downfall of ruthless President Snow (Donald Sutherland), which you can check out below. With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Peter Craig and Danny Strong and features a cast including Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone with Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland reprising their original roles from The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The lineup is joined by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 co-stars Academy Award-winner Julianne Moore, Mahershala Ali, Natalie Dormer, Wes Chatham, Elden Henson and Evan Ross. The film will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX3D theaters on November 20, 2015.
This is a really deep and dark poster and that is a good thing. This goes along with the teaser poster that were released for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and I love how the studio is connecting everything with the movies. With the poster getting released the teaser trailer will probably be released sometime this week and it makes sense for that since we are 5 months away from the films release.
Cult horror filmmaker Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) has made a video announcement via his Facebook page that his long held-up cannibal opus The Green Inferno will finally see release thanks to Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, which will open the film in theaters on September 25! That’s over a year after it’s original intended release date of September 5, 2014 which was halted by Open Road Films in the wake of financial difficulties incurred by its production company, Worldview Entertainment. The film follows a group of student activists who travel from New York City to the Amazon to save the rainforest. However, once they arrive in this vast green landscape, they soon discover that they are not alone and that no good deed goes unpunished. Directed and co-written by Roth with Guillermo Amoedo, The Green Inferno stars Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Daryl Sabara and Kirby Bliss Blanton. Roth also has the home invasion thriller Knock Knock starring Keanu Reeves, which currently has no U.S. release date but is scheduled to open in the UK on June 26.
This is great news to hear. I'm a huge fan of Eli Roth and the first trailer for this film got me hooked instantly and I was really upset that the film wasn't getting it's original release date. But I have to give props to Blumhouse for getting behind the project and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this film turns out and I hope my expectations are met.
Although Sofia Coppola was previously attached to direct Universal Pictures and Working Title Films’ upcoming adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale The Little Mermaid, Deadline today reports that the Lost in Translation helmer has exited the project due to creative differences. Edward Scissorhands scribe Caroline Thompson is currently rewriting The Little Mermaid, which was previously drafted by Fifty Shades of Grey and Saving Mr. Banks screenwriter Kelly Marcel. Before that, Brick Lane and Shame‘s Abi Morgan did a pass at the screenplay. Andersen’s story, which follows a young mermaid who gives up her life in the sea for a human prince, was first published in 1837 and has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen. The new version was initially said to have been inspired by a children’s puppet theatre production of the classic at London’s Little Angel Theatre Company.
I'm pretty sad about this news. Sofia Coppola is a talented director and I would've loved to have seen her vision of The Little Mermaid. I'm really curious to see who Universal will get to replace Coppola and who they will get to star in the film. It will be really interesting to see this type based on the theater production because it is vastly different than the Disney film.
