6-4-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following the Chronicle and Fantastic Four director’s unexpected absence from this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm Ltd. revealed last month that Josh Trank would not be directing the upcoming, still untitled second Star Wars Anthology film as was originally planned. Now, in a new interview with The LA Times, Trank shares his side of what happened, claiming that he simply wants to pursue a smaller kind of project. “I knew that this was going to be questioned,” says Trank, “and it was going to come under skepticism as to why I left ‘Star Wars’. And it was hard. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life… I want to do something original after this, because I’ve been living under public scrutiny, as you’ve seen, for the last four years of my life and it’s not healthy for me right now in my life. I want to do something that’s below the radar.” Trank also says that, despite online rumors, he remains closely connected with creatives like Lucasfilm VP of development Kiri Hart. “[T]hey all understood it because this whole experience for me has been very psychologically hard,” he continues. “…It feels sometimes like I’m living in a Paddy Chayefsky script or something like that. Every misconception that could possibly be made about this has been made to a hilariously satirical degree. And it’s people who haven’t met me before. If they met me – I don’t know, I feel like I’m a pretty harmless person.” The Star Wars Anthology film, tentatively planned for release in 2018, is still without a helmer. Trank’s Fantastic Four, meanwhile, will arrive in theaters August 7.

I really don't like or believe these comments. Now could he be saying what actually happened yeah, but we won't ever find out the whole story. I personally think that while this guy is a great director, he does have some personal issues that he needs to fix. I also think that some blame needs to go to Disney on this hiring. I mean the man has only done one film (Chronicle) and is working on finishing a comic-book movie reboot and he hasn't he proven himself enough to take on a Star Wars film. I think they announced his hiring too early and they should've waited until after Fantastic Four was released sort of like what they did with Gareth Edwards after Godzilla was a smash hit.

Paramount Pictures has now brought online the new Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation trailer, which you can watch in the player below.  In Rogue Nation, Ethan and the team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate – an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher), the new Mission: Impossible movie stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner (Marvel’s The Avengers, Kill the Messenger), Alec Baldwin (The Departed, “30 Rock”), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World’s End), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead), Simon McBurney (The Last King of Scotland, The Theory of Everything) and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, The Red Tent) and features a screenplay by Will Staples and Drew Pearce. A Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot production, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation will hit 2D and IMAX theaters July 31.

This was a fun and exciting trailer. It showed a little bit more of the film and it gave us a better look at to what the story is about. But to me the things that stood out were the scenes from the first trailer like Tom Cruise hanging off of the side of the plane (which he actually did that stunt himself). I'm a big fan of the Mission Impossible franchise and I'm looking forward to this film.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for their climbing adventure film Everest which you can behold in all its glory below. Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. The epic adventure stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal. Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Contraband) and produced by Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, as well as Nicky Kentish Barnes and Kormákur. Universal and Cross Creek Pictures’ presentation of Everest—in association with Walden Media—is adapted for the screen by William Nicholson (Gladiator) and Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire). The film was shot on location in Nepal on the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K. Everest will open in 3D/2D theaters and IMAX 3D on September 18.

This was an intense and action-packed trailer. The story that is being told in the film is both tragic and amazing all at the same time of what this crew did and sacrificed just to reach their ultimate goal. I know a lot of the stuff that is going to happen in the film and I'm really looking forward to seeing how some scenes will be handled. The film has a talented cast and visually it looks absolutely beautiful and I cannot wait to see the film.

The Peanuts Movie

I really love this poster. I am huge fan of The Peanuts and knowing that a 3D animated film is coming out for them gets me excited. The poster is great simply because it shows us all of our favorite characters from the tv specials and the comic strips. II'm not for sure what the film will be about, but we may get a new trailer either tomorrow or sometime in the next week and hopefully we'll find out more then. I'm excited for the film and I cannot wait to see it.

DreamWorks Pictures and Fox 2000 Pictures have just released the first poster for Bridge of Spies, the upcoming dramatic thriller directed by three-time Academy Award-winner Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia). Set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015. Bridge of Spies also stars three-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, a KGB agent defended by Donovan; Scott Shepherd as CIA operative Hoffman; Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan as James’ wife, Mary; Sebastian Koch as East German lawyer Vogel; and Academy Award nominee Alan Alda as Thomas Watters, a partner at Donovan’s law firm. Fox 2000 Pictures co-financed Bridge of Spies with DreamWorks in association with Participant Media, and will distribute internationally. Disney will handle domestic distribution. In addition to directing, Spielberg is producing the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger, with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Matt Charman and three-time Academy Award winners Ethan Coen & Joel Coen.

Bridge of Spies

I really like the poster. If I had to complain about something ti would be Tom Hanks's head just sitting there smack dab in the middle of the poster. If you remove his face and just show both the American flag and the Russian flag, I think it would have more of an impact. I know it's just a poster and having a film with both Hanks and Spielberg together is always a good thing and this film has a lot of Oscar potential and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
