6-15-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that English director Rupert Wyatt has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to helm the X-Men solo reboot/spin-off movie Gambit, which will star Channing Tatum as the title anti-hero Remy LeBeau.  Wyatt is best known to genre fans for resurrecting Fox’s stagnant “Planet of the Apes” franchise with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but even more appropriately he helmed last year’s The Gambler, which ties into Gambit’s affinity for playing cards. High-profile helmers Bennett Miller and Darren Aronofsky were previously approached for the project but passed.  Tatum recently spoke about playing the The Ragin’ Cajun, describing the film as an unconventional origin story and the character of Remy himself as, “kind of a tortured soul and he’s not a good guy. But he’s not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!” With a screenplay by Josh Zetumer (RoboCop), Gambit will be produced by Tatum and his creative partner Reid Carolin, along with “X-Men” franchise stewards Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. It is scheduled for release October 7, 2016.

This is a great choice for the film. I absolutely love what Wyatt did by reviving the Planet of the Apes franchisee and eventhough The Gambler was a setback, I still think he can so an amazing job with this character and film. Gambit is one of the most interesting characters in the comic book world and I think the crew that Fox has gotten together can work really well and I can't wait to see the film.

Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) has joined the cast of the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One! Variety has the news, reporting that Whitaker will join a cast that currentl includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman), and Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises). What’s more, the outlet also reports that Whitaker is in negotiations to join the cast of The Crow remake. The first in the “Star Wars Anthology” series of spin-off films, Rogue One will follow a rogue band of resistance fighters united to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy.  “It’s the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good,” director Gareth Edwards said at Star Wars Celebration. John Knoll, the Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor who currently serves as chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic, is executive producing the film along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce with John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) attached to co-produce. It was also recently confirmed that Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech) will be providing the score. Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is set for release on December 16, 2016.

This is terrific casting. Forrest Whitaker is one of the most versatile actors working in Hollywood as he can play both a bad guy (as seen in his Oscar winning performance in The Last King of Scotland) and the good guy (as seen in The Butler). Plus the fact he is an Oscar winner give the film a little more credibility. I've been looking forward to this film for a long time for a plethora of reasons and everything so far indicates this film is going to be amazing.

With the original film having brought in more than $758 million worldwide, Walt Disney Pictures is developing a Maleficent sequel! Deadline has the news, reporting that the studio has hired Linda Woolverton, who scripted the first film, to work on the followup, which is also being planned to once again star Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie in the title role. Jolie’s involvement as an actor is not a guarantee, however, at this stage. Maleficent, released in 2014, was directed by Robert Stromberg and tells the previously-untold story of the iconic villain from Disney’s 1959 animated classic, Sleeping Beauty. A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well. The original action adventure also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

This is isn't surprising news. Maleficent, despite mixed reviews still made a lot of money and it is a no-brainer for a sequel to be in the works. The sequel however will only work if Angelina Jolie returns, because she was really great as Maleficent and I don't think a sequel will feel the same without her. Like I said the first film had a lot of problems, but I still think a sequel can work.

Just last week, word broke that, following the tremendous box office success of Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 2, another sequel is in the works. Today, the studio has officially set Pitch Perfect 3 for release on July 21, 2017! Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are already confirmed to headline the returning cast. Pitch Perfect 2, which also stars Brittany Snow, Katey Sagal, Anna Camp, Alexis Knapp, Adam DeVine, Hailee Steinfeld, Ester Dean, Kelley Jakle and Hana Mae Lee, took the honor of highest-grossing movie-musical opening of all time. Its worldwide box office gross currently stands at more than $259 million. Kay Cannon, who scripted the first two franchise entries, is working on the script for the third film. An Emmy-nominated writer and actress with a heavy improv background, Cannon is also known for her work on NBC’s “30 Rock” and Fox’s “New Girl.” The only other film currently scheduled for that July 21, 2017 release date is Luc Besson’s science fiction adventure Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, set to star Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. Pitch Perfect 3 will be produced by series fixtures Paul Brooks of Gold Circle Entertainment and Max Handelman & Elizabeth Banks of Brownstone Productions.

This is a really great date. Like I said last week, a third film in the franchise is a no-brainer after all of the financial success the second film is having right now. The date is also interesting because this third film will have a release date in the middle of the summer which in recent years has been home to action-packed blockbuster films. This shows that the studio has confidence that the film can compete with anyone. I love the confidence and hopefully it pays off in the long run.

It appears to be one step forward, two steps back today for the upcoming remake of The Crow. This morning brought word that, in addition to securing a role in the upcoming Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker is in talks to play a role in new big screen take on the James O’Barr comic book. Now, though, Variety has revealed that The Crow has lost leading man Jack Huston due to scheduling issues. “Jack Huston is unfortunately unavailable to continue with us on ‘The Crow,'” says director Corin Hardy. “‘The Crow’ is an amazing project, and I am grateful that we have the time and patience to get it right. We look forward to unveiling our new lead and starting to film over the next several weeks.” The Crow was originally published as a four issue miniseries in 1989 and was later adapted into a film version by director Alex Proyas. The 1994 film starred Brandon Lee as protagonist Eric Draven. Tragically, Lee died in an accident during production. However, the role was recast for several sequels and even a short-lived television series. In the comics, too, O’Barr’s character has been sequelized in quite a few different stories and formats. Huston isn’t the first lead to exit the project. Luke Evans was formerly attached to play Draven, but officially departed the film earlier this year. The film features a script by Cliff Dorfman. O’Barr is also set to work as a creative consultant on the film. No release date has, as of yet, been announced, although it sounds like filmmaking will move forward as planned with a new lead already being targeted.

This is a pretty tough pill to swallow if you are working on the film. I mean it's great news to hear that Forrest Whitaker is probably going to join the cast and I think he'll play Officer Albricht (played by Ernie Hudson in the first film). As for Jack Huston it's pretty disappointing simply because you have went through so many actors that you are scrambling to find someone to replace him. I have been clamoring for Jared Leto to play Eric Draven, but since he's tied up with Suicide Squad and possibly future Batman films he probably won't be able to do the franchise. I think they should go after some of the guys who were in talks before like Tom Hiddleston or Ryan Reynolds going with the former more then the latter. Right now I don't know what to think and if they can't lock someone down then I think they don't need to make a rebooted film.
