Weekend Movie News 4-10-15 to 4-12-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Although it’s been heavily rumored for the past two months, it’s finally 100% official: The next Spider-Man will be Peter Parker and he will be roughly 15 or 16 years old. Collider got the confirmation from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who explains that he wants to take advantage of Parker’s high school life to tell Spidey stories that we haven’t yet seen on the big screen. “In terms of the age of an actor we’ll eventually cast, I don’t know,” Feige admits. “In terms of the age of what we believe Peter Parker is, I’d say 15-16 is right… [S]ome of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he’s in high school for a lot of it. We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU, which is something else we want to explore: how unique he is when now put against all these other characters.” Although Parker was only in high school for the first 28 issues of the original “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Brian Michael Bendis’s “Ultimate” take on the character was wholly set during Peter’s teen years. Feige also announced, that 2017’s Spider-Man film won’t be an origin story. “There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU,” says Feige. “You just don’t know it yet… In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.” “We’ve already designed the costume,” Feige teases, “which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.” Casting for the new Spider-Man is expected to be announced very soon as the character will debut in Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. He’ll then get his own solo film, written and directed by Drew Goddard, set for release on July 28, 2017.

It's great to finally here something official about the new Spider-Man. I like that he is going to be in his teens and that it won't tell the origin story because we've see that twice already and I think the audience gets the point. Now from people I follow (the great people over at Latino Review) have heard that there are currently four actors in the running, but no names are given. Three of the 4 are under the age of 18 and one is of legal age. Hearing that, I've come up with a couple of names that fit the description. The one that is of legal age could possibly be Timothée Chalamet who was most recently in Interstellar. As for the three underage actors I don't have the slightest clue. I'm just excited for Spider-Man to be back in Marvel's hands and I'm hoping we hear who the new Spider-Man is very soon.

TheWrap is reporting that Project Almanac director Dean Israelite is currently in talks to direct Lionsgate and Saban Films’ Power Rangers. Israelite has apparently been courted to direct a number of Hollywood tentpoles over the past few months on the basis of Project Almanac, although it only grossed $22 million domestically earlier this year after being delayed from last year. Israelite is said to be a huge fan of the Power Rangers franchise. The original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” was a hugely popular television show when it debuted in 1993, culled from reworked footage from Japan’s “Super Sentai” as it introduced North America to the concept of high school students with martial arts-based superpowers. The show has remained in production in various incarnations for the past two decades with two theatrical releases: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 and its less successful sequel Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. With a script in place by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class), the movie is already scheduled for July 22, 2016 with original creator Haim Saban acting as a producer, along with Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci. One presumes that Lionsgate is hoping to turn the Power Rangers into a theatrical franchise similar to what Paramount is doing with the similarly-popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Israelite is also attached to the long-in-development remake of the popular ’80s film War Games.

I think this guy is the perfect choice for the film. For those of you that know me well, I am a huge Power Rangers fan and I have been for very long time (my mother can attest to this) and I've been dying for a new film to come out for a very long time. I think if this guy can use the tone of Project Almanac, but with less shaky camera, then I think this film could be spectacular.

“X-Men,” “The Lord of the Rings,” and “The Hobbit” star Ian McKellen has joined the cast of Walt Disney Pictures’ Beauty and the Beast as the clock Cogsworth, reports Variety. In the March 17, 2017 release, Emma Watson and Dan Stevens will star as Belle and the Beast/Prince, respectively, and Luke Evans will play the role of Gaston. Emma Thompson has been cast as Mrs. Potts and Kevin Kline as Belle’s father, Maurice. Josh Gad was also previously reported as playing Lefou, though Disney has not confirmed that casting. The beloved tale will be retold for the big screen with a modern live-action lens and the help of transformative CG magic. Eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards for the 1991 animated classic, will score the film, which will feature new recordings of the original songs in addition to several new songs written by Menken and Sir Tim Rice. Bill Condon will direct from a script by Stephen Chbosky, and the film will be produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Production begins in May at Shepperton Studios in London.

This is terrific casting. Sir Ian McKellan is an icon in the movie world and just about any part you give him, he will knock it out of the park. I think he is perfect for this film and I can't wait to see his take on the character. So far this film has knocked the casting aspect out of the park and hopefully the story can be a home run as well and I expect more casting announcements in the near future.

The cast of the next, still-untitled Star Trek film is coming together. Following word late last month that Idris Elba is in talks to play the film’s villain, comes word, via Deadline, that Algerian actress Sofia Boutella, best known for her recent appearance as the blades-for-legs femme fatale assassin Gazalle in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, has signed on for a mystery role. The film is set to feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Justin Lin, four-time The Fast and the Furious director, is set to direct from a script by Pegg and Doug Jung. Paramount Pictures has Star Trek 3 scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release, which happens to be exactly two months to the day before the franchise’s 50th Anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap,” in which the crew of the Enterprise encounters a deadly shapeshifting salt vampire, introduced the world to “Star Trek” on September 8, 1966.

This is another terrific casting choice. From everything I've seen and heard from Sofia Boutella, she is a phenomenal person and a tremendous actress. She was terrific if Kingsman and I think she will fit in well with this movie. Right now being the huge Star Trek fan that I am, I can't come up with a part she could play. I would suspect she may be a Klingon Warrior who could give Kirk a run for his money or she could be good guy and my hope is for her to be a Vulcan and if she is then she could cause some tension in the Spock/Uhura love story.

With his latest, Furious 7, about to cross over the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office, The Conjuring‘s James Wan may be getting ready to take a step into the DC Universe. The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Wan is in talks to helm the Jason Momoa-led Aquaman solo film. Planned for a July 27, 2018 release, Aquaman is currently being developed as two separate screenplays, one by Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and another by Kurt Johnstad (300: Rise of an Empire). The character’s first comic book appearance was in 1941’s “More Fun Comics” #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Until now, the character has never made it to the big screen. Aquaman’s sole live-action appearance was as a teen on the WB’s “Smallville.” The character was planned for a spinoff series, “Mercy Reef,” but the property never made it beyond the pilot stage. Wan’s next big screen project is Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Conjuring 2, set for a June 10, 2016 release. He’s not yet a lock for Aquaman, however, as the trade cautions that his contract on the Fast and the Furious franchise may force him to return for an eighth big screen adventure. Long before his solo film, however, Momoa’s Aquaman will make his big screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016. It’s also a near certainty that he’ll be back for Justice League: Part One, arriving November 10, 2017. Aquaman then hits the following summer with Justice League: Part Two following on June 14, 2019.

I think this is a perfect choice. James Wan has now proven with Furious 7, that he is a versitile director and he can do anything. He does have a working relationship with Warner Bros. after making The Conjuring and currently working on The Conjuring 2 so it makes sense for WB to stay in house for their directors. I'm excited for this movie and I hope Wan gets the job, because I would love to see what he and Jason Mamoa can do together.
