4-23-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

With Furious 7 already having earned $1.158 billion at the worldwide box office, it’s no surprise that Vin Diesel just took to the stage at CinemaCon and announced that Furious 8 is coming to theaters on April 14, 2017. Furious 7 marks Universal’s first film to achieve $1 billion during its initial release, with 1993’s Jurassic Park having reached $1.044 billion after the 3D re-release in 2013. Furious 7 has earned an estimated $857.9 million overseas and an estimated $300.5 million in North America. Furious 7’s 17 day climb to $1 billion marked a new record for the fastest film to reach that milestone (The Avengers, Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 crossed $1 billion in 19 days). The only original live-action film franchise to achieve this magnitude of box office success, Furious 7 has propelled the “Fast & Furious” series past $3 billion worldwide. Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Furious 7. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell. Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell return to produce the film written by Chris Morgan.

This is great, but not surprising news to hear. I mean each entry in the franchise has made more and more money each and every time and with the success of Furious 7 this film is a no-brainer. With the way the sent off Paul Walker's character and with the tagline of "One Last Ride" being thrown around a lot of people thought this should and was the last film. I think with how Furious 7 developed, we'll get to see more of Lucas Black's character in the future. I'm really excited to hear this and the fact that we are getting it in two years is amazing.

Following the news from earlier today about the candidates set to play the live-action Spider-Man, Sony Pictures has officially announced that an animated film starring the wall crawler is in development. On July 20, 2018, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors of The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 and 22 Jump Street, are taking Spider-Man back to his graphic roots with the first-of-its-kind animated Spider-Man feature, it was announced today at CinemaCon by Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing. Lord & Miller are masterminding the project, writing the treatment and producing the film. As previously announced, Spider-Man will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, a live-action film being produced by Kevin Feige at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. The animated film from Lord & Miller, dated July 20, 2018, has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Pascal also serving as producers. Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

This is really interesting news. I say that because I'm questioning why we are getting an animated Spider-Man film coming out a year after the new Spider-Man reboot. Now granted it's not connected with the MCU, but it's still weird. There is absolutely no need for this film if it's not connected because you will begin to confuse everyone with two Spider-Man's running around. Personally I think that this film shouldn't be happening, but I'm curious to see how everything plays out and I'll be curious to see if it will eventually connected to the MCU.

If there’s one thing that the X-Men villain Apocalypse is known for, it’s his four horsemen made up of former members of the hero team. The group was previously teased in the post-credit scene of last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and in a recent interview with IGN, Oscar Isaac (who will play the titular villain) opened up about the recruitment of the horsemen as seen in the film. “Without giving anything away, the recruitment of the Four Horsemen is very cool,” he said. “It’s very interesting the way that he does that. You know the idea of – the way that cult leaders do – they find people that are in need of something and try to fulfill that thing in them – as it relates to every one of the Horseman….On an individual level he’s able to reveal the true power of his Horsemen and what’s true to them. And I think to reveal the weakness – how weak we’ve become. Because this is an ancient entity. So to come to – I think 1983 – and say, ‘How did the world become so weak? How did we allow ourselves to become to weak and to enslave ourselves.’ I think that’s where he’s coming from.” The Star Wars: The Force Awakens star was also asked if he was excited about playing a character with a number of different forms, to which he replied:“Absolutely. And at the same time figuring out what the limits are and how it relates to how he moves and what it costs him. That’s always a fun thing. So to be able to sit with [writer/producer] Simon Kinberg and – as a fan – just go through it and be like, ‘Well what about this!?! You know, this is something that he does in the comics and is there a way to incorporate this? Or if he has this power suddenly how do we make that not come out of nowhere?’ So it’s really fun to map that thing out. But yes, the nature of how his powers manifest themselves is to a certain extent quite open to interpretation. Because there are so many and they are so vast.” Isaac will star opposite an enormous ensemble in the film, including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Rose Byrne as their “First Class” characters. In addition, “Apocalypse” will see the return of Evan Peters as Quicksilver and newcomers Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and Olivia Munn as Psylocke. The film is written by Simon Kinberg from a treatment by Mike Dougherty, Dan Harris and Kinberg. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Bryan Singer-directed X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.

These are some really great comments. I always love it when an actor is passionate about the character they are playing and want to get to know them better. As a fan of the comics, I am really interested to see the Age of Apocalypse storyline come to the big screen and as a spoiler the horseman of death in the comics has been several different people most notably Gambit, Wolverine, Archangel and Pyslocke. Now Channing Tatum has pretty much shot the down the idea of Gambit appearing in the film before his stand alone film hits theaters in October 2016. Hugh Jackman is said to have more of a cameo than a leading role so the only person that is left is Psylocke who will be played by the recently announce Olivia Munn, so it's safe to say that she will be one of Apoclypse's horseman or it could be Archangel who is being played by Ben Hardy. All I know is that I love the comic storyline and after X-Men: Days of Future Past, I am really excited to see this film.

A key supporting character in the franchise, Baxter Stockman is set to appear in next summer’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Variety has the news, reporting that Tyler Perry will play Stockman, who, in the mythology of the TMNT comics and various television series, invents the robotic, turtle-hunting Mousers. Stockman first appeared in the original Mirage Comics as an African American scientist, although the character had his race changed for his repeated appearances in the popular 1987 animated series. More recent animated versions of the character have returned Stockman to his original ethnicity. When ComingSoon.net sat down with Megan Fox to chat about the first film, the actress revealed that Stockman actually has a cameo. Played by K. Todd Freeman, the character can be glimpsed briefly in a flashback sequence. Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form are returning to produce the upcoming sequel which features a script by returning screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. Fox will reprise her role of April O’Neil along with William Fichtner as Eric Sacks and the debut of Stephen Amell as masked vigilante Casey Jones. The original film also starred Will Arnett, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Noel Fisher, Danny Woodburn, Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub. It grossed more than $485 million at the worldwide box office. Set to be directed by Earth to Echo‘s David Green, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is set for release on June 3, 2016.

I never thought I would say this, but this is actually good casting. Now let me be honest I'm not a huge fan of Tyler Perry, but after the performance he gave in Gone Girl, I actually think he has a lot of talent and he can showcase it if he's in the right film. Is this film one of those films no, but he could still do a good job. I think he has the personality to do good in the role, but it can also have the chance to be really bad. With him being Stockman I have a feeling he'll be the main villain in the film, but who knows especially with the recent announcement that Bebop and Rocksteady will be in the film.

Universal Pictures announced today at CinemaCon that the studio has set release dates for the two sequels to Fifty Shades of Grey, which opened in theaters earlier this year on February 13. Fifty Shades Darker will hit theaters on February 10, 2017 and Fifty Shades Freed is coming on February 9, 2018. It was revealed just yesterday that the screenplay for Fifty Shades Darker will be written by author E L James’ husband, Niall Leonard. In related news, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment also announced that a Fifty Shades Darker tease will be available exclusively on the upcoming release of Fifty Shades of Grey on Digital HD on Friday, May 1st and on Blu-ray on Friday, May 8th. A global phenomenon, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was first published in 2011 and follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). “Fifty Shades Darker” (2011) and a third book, “Fifty Shades Freed” (2012), explore the couple’s deepening relationship. The trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the “”Fifty Shades”” trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever. The first film, scripted by Saving Mr. Banks‘ Kelly Marcel, was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) and has earned an impressive $568 million at the worldwide box office. It’s no secret, however, that James clashed with Marcel and Taylor-Johnson creatively over their approach to Fifty Shades of Grey and it was announced that neither would be returning for the sequel.

Look I'll be really honest with everyone I don't care. I hated the first film and now with the writer's husband working on the screenplay I hate this idea even more. Granted they did make a lot of money (don't know why) and I know a lot of people weren't happy with the film. For E.L. James (the author) to get mad at someone who took her horribly written books and made money with sort of cinematic idea just makes me laugh because she has no room to talk for basically writing the book based off of her fan fiction of Twilight (yes that is very true). The next two films will probably be just as bad if not worse and I could care less.
