4-8-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

As production nears, Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad has pulled its cast together for a read-through. Although Jared Leto (The Joker) is noticeably absent (he’s currently on tour), the above image, Tweeted by writer and director David Ayer, reveals a few surprise additions to the film’s ensemble cast such as Neighbors star Ike Barinholtz and Flags of Our Fathers’ Adam Beach. You can check out the photo below. Suicide Squad is set to star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Plastique and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film will hit theaters on August 5, 2016. Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the group was retooled into its current iteration as villains working off their sentence by John Ostrander. The team has included countless DC villains (and heroes) among its ranks throughout the years. It’s also been a staple of recent DC media. The CW’s hit series “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team.

Suicide Squad Cast

I really love this photo, It's always great to see the cast get together and they look like they are having fun. Now the one big person missing from the photo (besides Leto) is Joe Manganiello. I say that because he was rumored to play Deathstroke and that's not the case and he has turned down the role for another movie (which you'll see the news below) and instead he's been replaced by Jim Parrick who is the photo above. Also rumors are flying around about the other two additions that they are possibly playing Hugo Strange (Barinholtz) and Ravan (Beach). Now granted the last part is all rumors and unconfirmed so take that information with a big grain of salt. Overall I love the cast and I'm excited to see this movie.

Move over, Fast & Furious franchise, because Need for Speed is looking to get a sequel. According to Variety, joint venture partners China Movie Channel Program Center, Jiaflix Enterprises and 1905 Pictures want to make a sequel to last year’s video game adaptation, which starred Aaron Paul and grossed only $43 million stateside. This group previously partnered with Paramount on the partially China-set Transformers: Age of Extinction. Despite underperforming domestically, Need for Speed amassed $203 million worldwide (including $65 million in China), thus making a tidy profit while impressing viewers with its emphasis on practical car stunts. Now the Chinese joint venture wants to partner with studio DreamWorks Pictures on a sequel set in China and utilizing major Chinese stars in hopes of capitalizing on the brand’s popularity there. Despite getting the okay from the original video game developer Electronic Arts, talks with DreamWorks have not yet taken place. The unprecedented global success of this past weekend’s Furious 7 might entice the studio to figure out a way to make their own homegrown sequel to ensure they don’t outsource a potential billion-dollar franchise.  “We are excited to work with EA, one of the world’s most recognized creative companies,” said Yin Cao, chairman of China Movie Channel. “We are also delighted that much of ‘Need for Speed 2′ would be filmed in China, and we believe it will include much more Chinese talent and elements.” Jiaflix president Marc Ganis predicted the launch of “one of the next great franchises for movie fans around the world.” Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever, Need for Speed was directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) and stars Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, Dominic Cooper, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Harrison Gilbertson, Scott ‘Kid Cudi’ Mescudi, Michael Keaton and Dakota Johnson.

This isn't surprising news to hear. The made a big chunk of money and it was enough for them to make a sequel. It also makes sense to go to China because it's cheaper to film outside of America so financially it makes sense.  As for the first movie, I thought it had it's moments, but it was an overall disappointment. Hopefully the sequel can be better than the first one.

Deadline reports that Walt Disney Studios is embarking on yet another live-action version of one of their famous animated films with a Pinocchio “inspired” movie. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape writer Peter Hedges will pen the film, which will center on the wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a “real boy,” and is described as being “about the relationship between a father and son, the ramifications of lying and creating stories and living in a fantasy world.” The original Pinocchio, based on the 1883 novel The Adventures Of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, first debuted in theaters in 1940 and won two Academy Awards. A sequel to the animated film was in development as recently as 2001, though it was eventually cancelled. This marks yet another live-action version of a classic cartoon from Walt Disney Studios, including last year’s Maleficent, the recently-released Cinderella, the in-production The Jungle Book, the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, and the recently-announced Dumbo, Mulan, and Winnie the Pooh. Another Pinocchio film is in development as well with Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro attached. That version is being developed as a stop-motion animated 3D film.

Like every other announced live-action announcement I'm not surprised. This is what happens when the past three live-action adaptions (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and Cinderella) make a lot of money. Disney right now is at a point where they can possibly do no wrong and they can pretty much make any movie they want to. I'm really curious to see who they get to direct the film and play the lead-role. Once again we're going to have two different versions and it'll be interesting to see which film does better at the box offcie and critically.

Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, the new movie that continues the adventures of Paul Reuben’s iconic character, has today revealed that Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello has joined the cast. Pee-wee’s Big Holiday marks the feature film directorial debut of John Lee (“Broad City,” “Inside Amy Schumer”) and features a screenplay by Reubens and Paul Rust. Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, Knocked Up) produces the film, which will premiere exclusively in all Netflix territories. The storyline is said to focus on a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger who inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday. “Joe’s already my friend in real life,” Herman writes, “and he’s tremendously talented and a terrific person! I am so glad we are FINALLY going to get to work together! This totally makes up for being cut out of ‘Magic Mike’ and ‘Magic Mike 2’!” “Paul Reubens is one of the great comic geniuses of our time,” adds  Manganiello. “Growing up, my Saturday mornings were all about Pee-wee Herman. I saw everything he did. I can’t believe that I’m going to get to share scenes with one of the iconic figures of my childhood.” Pee-wee Herman previously starred in Tim Burton’s 1985 smash Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, which was followed on the big screen by Big Top Pee-wee in 1988. On the small screen, “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” ran for five seasons with Herman recently returning for “The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway” in 2011. Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will debut exclusively on Netflix in all territories.

This is great, but very surprising news. This is the film that Joe Manganiello chose over Suicide Squad, which just baffles me. I think he is a good fit for the film and I'm curious to see how is comedic timing will be for the film. Look the first Pee-Wee is just amazing and I'm looking forward to see how Paul Reuben's does stepping back into the role that made his career.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has hired screenwriter Carl Ellsworth to pen the reboot of Gremlins. No stranger to horror, Ellsworth has previously drafted the remake of The Last House on the Left, Red Dawn, Disturbia, and the upcoming Goosebumps. Another film in the fan-favorite franchise has been on and off in development for years, with a previous draft being written by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abrahama Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), but as of yet nothing has materialized. The outlet also notes that the original film’s screenwriter, Chris Columbus, was previously in talks to direct, but that is no longer the case. Instead he’ll produce along with the original film’s executive producer Steven Spielberg. The original 1984 classic Gremlins was directed by Joe Dante and has become infamous for being one of the films “responsible” for the creation of the MPAA’s PG-13 rating. It also became a box office smash, bringing in over $150 million domestically and making way for a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. A farcical meta-take on the mischievous creatures, the sequel didn’t replicate the box office success of its predecessor but has managed to garner a cult following.

This is an interesting choice for a screenwriter. I mean if you look at his past history then you would think that this guy is terrible and I'm scared to see him write a new Gremlins film. Before I see him do this I need to see how Goosebumps does before I can start to get worried. In the mean time I'm still scared, but there is always a possibility that it could be good.
