4-7-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Previously reported three weeks ago, Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the upcoming two-part epic, Avengers: Infinity War. “It’s Thanos against everyone,” star Josh Brolin told us about the “Phase Three” capper late last year, which is believed to involve the Mad Titan’s quest to bring together the six Infinity Stones we’ve seen appear throughout the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn also chimed in previously on the idea of the Guardians meeting the Avengers saying: “When I’m asked about the Guardians and their future, and whether they’ll meet up with the Avengers I really don’t have all that much to say, because some of it isn’t decided yet, and I don’t want to give away what is decided.” The Russos, who also directed the comedies You, Me and Dupree and Welcome to Colinwood in addition to episodes of “Arrested Development” and “Community,” recently signed a first look deal at Sony Pictures. There, the pair is attached to direct The Gray Man, a big screen adaptation of Mark Greaney’s 2009 thriller novel, with rumors swirling that they’re also planning a Ghostbusters film with Channing Tatum attached to star. Production on the Russos’ Captain America: Civil War is set to begin soon in Atlanta, Georgia with the film targeting a May 6, 2016 release. The third film in the Captain America franchise will bring the classic storyline from the comics to life pitting Cap (Chris Evans) against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), as well as introducing Black Panther to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with actor Chadwick Boseman ahead of his own film later in Phase 3. After that, Avengers: Infinity War Part I will see a release on May 4, 2018, with Part II set to follow one year later on May 3, 2019.

It's finally great to get the conformation on this news. We've heard for a really long time that the Russo brothers were going to direct both Infinity Part I and Part II, but we've never heard anything official until now. These guys are really great directors and what they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier was just fantastic and they completely changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm excited to see these two movies and to see how the Russo brothers handle this big of a movie.

First rumored last month, it appears that Walt Disney Pictures is, indeed, moving forward with TRON 3 as The Hollywood Reporter today confirms Olivia Wilde will be reprising her role as everyone’s favorite ISO, Quorra! She joins fellow returning lead Garret Hedlund, who is set to return as Sam Flynn. TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski will also be back with plans for production to take place in Vancouver later this year. Released in 1982, the original TRON underperformed at the box office, but nonetheless managed to find an important place in pop culture over the next few decades. The sequel was scripted by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz from a story they developed with Brian Klugman and Lee Sternhal, based in turn on characters created by Bonnie MacBird and original TRON helmer Steven Lisberger. That film’s worldwide box office exceeded $400 million. Wilde previously reprised the Quorra role for an episode of the short-lived animated series “TRON: Uprising,” although the episode itself took place prior to the events of TRON: Legacy. Most recently, Wilde starred in director David Gelb’s horror thriller The Lazarus Effect opposite Mark Duplass, Sarah Bolger, Evan Peters and Donald Glover.

This is ins't really surprising news to hear. Olivia Wilde's character played a pretty key part in the last film and it's not a huge shock to bring her back for the third film. When this film was first rumored to be happening I wasn't really excited for it because I hated Tron: Legacy. Now look if this film does officially happen then I'll have to give it a shot, but I won't set the bar as high as I did last with Tron: Legacy.

According to Screen Daily, Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and David Wenham (the 300 movies) have joined Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel in the Saroo Brierley biopic Lion for The Weinstein Company. Divian Ladwa (“Detectorists”) also joins the cast of the film, which chronicles the life of Brierley (Patel), who at age five was separated from his mother in India only to find her 25 years later. Kidman plays his adoptive mother Sue, who moved the boy to Hobart, Australia. A score of other famous Indian actors will be seen, including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priyanka Bose, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Deepti Naval. Luke Davies (Candy, Life) adapted Brierley’s true story “A Long Way Home” for director Garth Davis (Top of the Lake), which has begun shooting in India and will move to Melbourne and Hobart in mid-April. Emile Sherman, Iain Canning and Angie Fielder produce Lion for See-Saw Films in association with Sunstar Entertainment and Aquarius Films. Mara will next be seen in Terrence Malick’s Weightless, opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes’ Carol, and as Tiger Lily in Joe Wright’s summer blockbuster Pan. Wenham, who appeared opposite Kidman in Moulin Rouge! and Australia, will co-star in the BBC Drama “Banished” and stars in the romance Force of Destiny.

This is really great casting. Rooney Mara is an Academy Award nominated actress and David Wenham has been in a lot of great movies and has given some pretty great performances. I think this is a pretty interesting story and it's kind of great to see that Dev Patel is playing someone from India and Kidman is playing an Australian. I like the concept and I'm actually looking forward to seeing this film.

According to Showbiz411, Morgan Creek’s Tupac Shakur biopic may be going through a director shuffle as Oscar-nominated filmmaker John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) has reportedly been replaced by Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress, One False Move). Singleton told XXL Magazine that his involvement in the film about the slain rap legend was “on hold right now because we’re trying to figure out some things… I got a script and I got the blessings from his family. We’ll see…. We’ve got to get it right.” Singleton was an obvious choice to helm the biopic given his first-hand working relationship with Shakur, whom he directed in 1993’s Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson. He also wrote the film Baby Boy specifically for Shakur, although Tyrese Gibson replaced him after his murder in 1996. An actor-turned-acclaimed director, Franklin has been out of the feature game for a spell since the 2003 Denzel Washington-starrer Out of Time, with only 2013’s low-budget Bless Me, Ultima to his credit. He has recently amassed an impressive run helming episodes of acclaimed TV shows such as “Homeland,” “The Affair” and “House of Cards,” being Emmy-nominated for the latter. Tupac will be produced by James G. Robinson, David Robinson & LT Hutton along with Randall Emmett and George Furla. The film will be executive produced by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur with production targeted for later this year.

This is pretty interesting news. I like John Singleton's directing style and I think he would've been great to direct this film. I've not seen a lot of Carl Franklin's film, but I'm curious to see how he handles this project. I'm a huge fan of Tupac and he has such an interesting story that it is meant to be told on the big-screen. I'm also really curiosu to see who gets cast as Tupac. i think they could go back with Anthony Mackie who played him in the movie Notorious.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the popular video game series Five Nights at Freddy’s has been picked up by Warner Bros. for a feature adaptation with Roy Lee (Poltergeist, The Ring) of Vertigo Entertainment as well as Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and David Katzenberg (Stephen King’s IT) of KatzSmith Productions set to produce. They’re currently seeking writers for the project. “We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith. “The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” said series creator Scott Cawthon. Five Night’s at Freddy’s challenges players to survive for five nights as a security guard in a demented pizza entertainment restaurant where homicidal, possessed animatronics roam the halls in search of their next victims. Though the first game only debuted back in August of 2014, a sequel was released in November with a third chapter making its way online this past March. The series has played with non-linear and non-traditional storytelling as well as the second game in the series was actually a prequel with the third game taking place thirty years after the original. Mini-games also inhabit the titles offering even more clues to the lore of the franchise and the underlying story of what caused the animatronics of Freddy Fazbear and his friends to haunt the location.

This is pretty great news to hear. I've played Five Nights at Freddy's and the first time I played it I was actually creeped out by it. It has an interesting concept, but it's story just doesn't have much to lend itself to a movie. They could come up with something and it could be great, but I'm not expecting much from it.
