4-22-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Who will be the next young actor to take on the role of Peter Parker and his webhead alter ego in the new Spider-Man film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios? TheWrap claims to have an update on the current search for a star, reporting that, while no offers have been made, at least five young stars are very much in contention at the moment. Their list includes Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game), Timothee Chalamet (One and Two, Interstellar), Tom Holland (Locke, The Impossible), Liam James (“Psych,” The Way, Way Back) and Natt Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns). “There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU,”  Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told CraveOnline earlier this month. “You just don’t know it yet… In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.” Spider-Man will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. He’ll then get his own solo film, set for release on July 28, 2017.

All of these names are some great names for the role. When I first heard that they were looking to cast a young kid for the role a couple of names came to mind and one of them was Timothee Chalamet. I think he is good for the part and he could really grow into the role. As for the other names they don't get me excited and they're not recognizable other than Asa Butterfield . Now granted being recognizable doesn't mean anything but it might help for a franchise that quite frankly is struggling. Right now these names aren't confirmed so anything is possible, but with Civil War beginning to start production soon the new Spider-Man will be announced in the coming weeks.

According to TrekMovie, Paramount Pictures has recently registered the title “Star Trek Beyond” for their untitled Star Trek film with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a tell-tale sign not only of a title but that the third film in the reboot series will indeed involve explorations into deep space, as has been rumored for some time. “It’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it,” screenwriter Simon Pegg told The Guardian recently. “Where no man has gone before – where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation. But yeah, that’s the mood at the moment.” The film is set to feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, along with Idris Elba as the film’s villain and Sofia Boutella in a mystery role. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Justin Lin, four-time The Fast and the Furious director, is set to direct from a script by Pegg and Doug Jung. Paramount Pictures has Star Trek 3 scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release, which happens to be exactly two months to the day before the franchise’s 50th Anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap,” in which the crew of the Enterprise encounters a deadly shapeshifting salt vampire, introduced the world to “Star Trek” on September 8, 1966.

I really like this title. It goes away from the numerals that the original 6 Star Trek films had, but The Next Generation movies  also didn't have numerals so this is nothing new to the franchise. I can say that it is a better title than Into Darkness and it kind of gives you that feeling that they are going on beyond to were no man has gone before. I've loved the past two films in the franchise and I'm really excited for this film and curious on seeing Justin Lin take over the franchise.

Though the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a direct follow-up to 2013’s Man of Steel, as evidenced by the teaser trailer that debuted earlier this week, one of the film’s stars Henry Cavill says that it’s not exactly a “Superman sequel.” “I wouldn’t call this a Superman sequel,” Cavill tells MTV. “This is Batman vs. Superman so it’s a separate entity altogether. It’s introducing the Batman character and expanding upon the universe which was kicked off by Man of Steel…. Everything could change in the editing room, but as it stands it’s definitely an introduction to the character and ultimately an introduction to Justice League.” The current calendar of DC releases has Justice League Part 1, which will also be directed by Zack Snyder, set for release November 17, 2017, a little over 18 months after the release of “Dawn of Justice.” In between the films, however, will be even more DC fare with Suicide Squad and a solo Wonder Woman film. Warner Bros. Pictures’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the highly-anticipated action adventure starring Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Set to open worldwide on March 25, 2016, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

This is isn't shocking news/ I'm fairly certain Cavill has talked about this before, but I may be wrong. We've known for a while that this film wouldn't be a sequel. Now of course it will mention the events of Man of Steel, but that's what a shared universe is supposed to do. I know the teaser divided a lot of people, but it just made me more excited to see it.

Following his recent Academy Award win for Selma‘s “Glory,” actor and musician Common is heading to the DC Universe! The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that the star, who recently appeared in Run All Night, will play a mystery role in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. DC Comics fan are likely already well-aware of Common’s past connection the big screen DCU. He was previously attached to play Green Lantern John Stewart in George Miller’s long-defunct Justice League. Common joins a cast that already includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jared Leto as The Joker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Plastique and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Raymond Olubowale are also attached to the film in still-unconfirmed roles. Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the group was retooled into its current iteration as villains working off their sentence by John Ostrander. The team has included countless DC villains (and heroes) among its ranks throughout the years. It’s also been a staple of recent DC media. The CW’s hit series “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team. Now filming, Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.

This is pretty great casting. Now granted Common isn't the greatest actor in the world, but he is improving with every role he gets (except for Movie 43 he was horrible, but so was everyone else). A lot of people are speculating that he could play Bronze Tiger which would make sense, because Bronze Tiger is a member of the Suicide Squad and plus (SPOILER) Micheal Jai White played the character in the tv series Arrow and he dies in one of the episodes. I think that the role will be great for him, but right now all we can do is speculate.

The cast of Ben Stiller’s highly-anticipated comedy sequel Zoolander 2 continues to grow today as “SNL” and “Portlandia” star Fred Armisen has revealed that he’s headed to the European production. Zoolander 2, co-starring Owen Wilson as Hansel, will shoot in Rome for 12 weeks in and around the famed Cinecittà Studios. Stiller is directing and co-wrote the script with Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) and recently confirmed the rumor from last fall that Penelope Cruz will be playing a major role. Additionally, Will Ferrell is all-but-confirmed to return as Mugatu, with Stiller’s wife Christine Taylor also coming back as Matilda with young actor Cyrus Arnold stepping in as Zoolander’s son. Billy Zane, who cameoed as himself in the original, is also set to return. Jonah Hill, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, Naomi Campbell and Anna Wintour have also all been rumored to appear in supporting roles or cameos. “Last year, we started looking at it again,” Stiller told ComingSoon.net of the project in a recent interview, “and it seemed like the confluence of events of everybody wanting to do do it, and it got to a point where it actually came together. And it’s exciting to finally be able to talk about it, too.” Stiller will also produce Zoolander 2 alongside Stuart Cornfeld.

I think this is great casting. Fred Armisen is one of the funniest people that has been on SNl in recent memory and I wish he was still on the show. I'm curios to see who he is playing and how big of a role he will have. I'm enjoyed Zoolander and I'm anxious to see what they come up with next.
