4-2-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Despite a number of trailers and TV spots for the film, Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming Tomorrowland is still largely a mystery, but now an international trailer has debuted online offering huge clues to the actual plot of the film and you can check it out below. From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award-winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world – and them – forever. Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, Tomorrowland promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of. The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson. Tomorrowland is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Bernard Bellew, Jeff Jensen and Brigham Taylor serving as executive producers. Tomorrowland opens in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2015.

This was actually a really great trailer. It gives a better look at the plot and it showed us a few new scenes. When I first heard about the film I thought it was an interesting idea, but nothing to be excited about until I saw the first trailer and now it's one of my most anticipated of the year. I think this film is going to be spectacular and I cannot wait to see it.

20th Century Fox and MGM have released the new trailer for their upcoming Poltergeist remake and you can watch it below. Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead, The Grudge) and director Gil Kenan (Monster House) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever. Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Poltergeist boasts an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell (The Way, Way Back, Iron Man 2), Rosemarie DeWitt (Kill the Messenger, The Odd Life of Timothy Green), Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, “Mad Men”), Saxon Sharbino (Trust Me, “Touch”), and Jane Adams (“Hung,” Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), along with 8-year-old Kennedi Clements as Madison, a play on the iconic Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) from the Tobe Hooper original. Produced by Steven Spielberg, the original Poltergeist hit theaters in 1982 and was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side in 1986 and Poltergeist III in 1988. Poltergeist is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2015.

This was a pretty decent trailer. It showed a couple of news clips, but not much more. I wasn't looking forward tot he film until I heard that Sam Rockwell was cast and It immediately peaked my interest. I love the first original film and the franchise has a curse on it, but I hop this film can be broken with this film.

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired worldwide rights to I Saw the Light, the story of the legendary country western singer Hank Williams, who in his brief life created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life. Written and directed by Marc Abraham, I Saw the Light is based on Colin Escott’s award-winning biography and stars Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olsen, Bradley Whitford, David Krumholtz and Cherry Jones. RatPac Entertainment’s Brett Ratner and Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert produced the film, with G. Marq Roswell and Abraham. James Packer of RatPac Entertainment and Jason Cloth of Creative Wealth Media Finance executive produced. Notable director of photography Dante Spinotti was the cinematographer for the film. “All of us at RatPac Entertainment are thrilled that Sony Pictures Classics is distributing ‘I Saw the Light,’ as Michael and Tom are unparalleled in their marketing and distribution expertise. This film is a perfect fit, especially given their passion for country music, and we could not be in better hands,” said Brett Ratner. “For over 20 years Sony Classics has been making, distributing and supporting independent films and filmmakers. If you want your film presented to the right audiences with fervor and in the company of previous artists from Kurosawa to Bergman, and countless others, you wish upon a star for Tom Bernard and Michael Barker to be in your corner,” said Marc Abraham. “‘I Saw the Light,’ with Tom, Lizzie and gang, is in the right spot by me.” “Tom Hiddleston gives an amazing performance completely embodying the talent and spirit of Hank Williams, and Marc’s script and direction are brilliant,” said Aaron L. Gilbert. “I am very pleased that the picture has found a home at Sony Pictures Classics where I know Michael and Tom will give it the attention and special handling it deserves.” Sony Pictures Classics added, “We have been actively talking with Brett Ratner about becoming involved with ‘I Saw the Light’ for a long time. Globally at this moment, adoration for Hank Williams and his music is at fever pitch. The timing is perfect for a full screen portrayal of his life. As embodied by Tom Hiddleston and written and directed by Marc Abraham, ‘I Saw the Light’ in our opinion, can’t miss with audiences worldwide. We are so pleased to be a part of this adventure.”

This is great news to hear. I'm glad to see really interesting films get a production company behind them to help fund and release the film. I'm huge fan of Hank Williams and the fact the he is getting a bio-pic excites me. I've always thought since the announcement of Tom Hiddleston that this film could be really great and I'm looking forward to seeing how Hiddleston does with the role.

Disney continues to pillage their animation back-catalogue for the live-action remake treatment, as Deadline reveals that the studio is in development on a new Winnie the Pooh feature film that will spin a new yarn about an adult Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred Acre Woods. To pen this reimagined take on A.A. Milne’s famous children’s book series, Disney has hired Alex Ross Perry, the 30-year-old indie filmmaker whose Sundance-favorite Listen Up Philip garnered rave reviews last year. Perry is currently in post-production on his next directorial feature, Queen of Earth. The soft-spoken yellow teddy bear’s history at the company dates back to the first theatrical short film Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, which was supervised by Walt Disney himself in 1966. Two more shorts followed and eventually all three were released to theaters as 1977’s The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. An additional pair of theatrical shorts in the ’80s were later joined by several TV series, eight direct-to-DVD movies, and four more traditionally-animated theatrical features, the last of which was the 2011 box office failure Winnie the Pooh. Disney has had quite a lot of success lately with live-action versions of some of its animated classics. Currently in theaters, Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella has already grossed more than $335 million worldwide. It was recently preceded by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (a quasi-sequel to the 1951 animated feature) and Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent (a retelling of 1959’s Sleeping Beauty). On the way soon are also Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book (arriving April 15, 2016), Beauty and the Beast (March 17, 2017) and, currently without a release date, Tim Burton’s Dumbo as well as Mulan. There’s also an Alice in Wonderland sequel, Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, that is being directed by The Muppets‘ James Bobin and is set to arrive May 27, 2016.

This isn't shocking news. I mean so far Disney has a had a lot of financial success with their live-action remakes and you knew this one had to be coming. The main reason why all of this news of Dumbo, Mulan and Winnie the Pooh are coming is because of the success of Cinderella. I really like the story that's planned out for it and I think it is the perfect way to go and I can't wait to see who they get to play Christopher Robin. I personally think that Neil Patrick Harris would fit the role really well.

To date one of the seemingly more unlikely licensed properties to be targeted for a big screen adaptation, a Play-Doh movie appears to be on the way from 20th Century Fox. Deadline has the news, reporting that the studio is teaming with Hasbro to build a narrative around the children’s modeling clay that’s fun to play with, not to eat. What’s more, the outlet reports that the Play-Doh film has attracted the interest of none other than Paul Feig, who has entered talks to both write and direct. Since the product’s creation in 1955, more than 950 million pounds of Play-Doh have been sold with 100 million cans currently being produced every year. “The Play-Doh brand’s mission is to spark children’s imaginations and inspire creativity in their lives,” reads Hasbro’s official site. “Kids can enjoy silly tactile fun while helping to build fine and gross motor skills.” Hasbro has previously brought to the big screen films based on toy lines like Transformers and G.I. Joe as well as board games like Battleship and Ouija. Other properties on the way to the big screen from the companyare at various stages of development. Among them are Jem and the Holograms, Candy Land, Monopoly, Magic: The Gathering and Tonka Trucks. Feig, whose latest, Spy reteams him with Bridesmaids and The Heat star Melissa McCarthy, is next directing Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters reboot, set to star Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

Are we seriously getting this film? I mean this can all be attributed to the fact that The Lego Movie did so well. Look to me this is a really really stupid idea, but I said the same thing about The Lego Movie and it turned out really well. I'm jut hoping Fox doesn't embarrass themselves with this movie.
