11-20-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following yesterday’s poster reveal, Universal Pictures has debuted the trailer for Pitch Perfect 2, opening in theaters on May 15, 2015. The Barden Bellas are back in Pitch Perfect 2, the follow-up to summer 2012’s smash hit. The comedy is directed by Elizabeth Banks, co-star and producer of Pitch Perfect, and produced by Paul Brooks, Max Handelman and Banks. Writer Kay Cannon returns to the team to pen the next chapter.

This was a really fun trailer. I love seeing the entire cast returning for the film and eventhough looks like it's borrowing a lot of other films plots it still looks fun and interesting. I enjoyed the first film and I'm looking forward to this film.

Academy Award-nominated director Paul Greengrass is preparing for a visit to Oceania. Deadline reports that The Bourne Supremacy and Captain Phillips helmer is set to direct a big screen adaptation of George Orwell’s iconic dystopic science fiction novel, 1984. Finding Neverland scribe James Graham is attached to provide the adapted screenplay. Released in 1948, the novel tells of a future world wherein individuality and privacy are outlawed and citizens live in service to an all-seeing entity called “Big Brother.” Orwell’s novel has been adapted twice before for the big screen. A 1956 version was released by Columbia Pictures, starring Edmond O’Brien, Michael Redgrave and Jan Sterling. Director Michael Anderson would later go on to explore some of the same themes in 1976′s Logan’s Run. Later, in the actual year 1984, Michael Radford helmed a big screen take on the novel with John Hurt, Richard Burton and Suzanna Hamilton starring. Modern literary dystopias have proved fertile ground at the box office with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 expected to make a major debut this weekend. It’s likely no coincidence that the last time we heard about plans for a (now seemingly defunct) big screen take on Orwell’s tome was just before the first Hunger Games opened in 2012.

This is an amazing choice. Greengrass is know for directing political thrillers and spy films so this is right in his wheelhouse. Look I had to read the book back in high school and I was bored to tears reading it and the same goes for the film adaptation that starred John Hurt. I'm really anxious to see who the cast will be and hopefully Greengrass can entertain me with this new adaptation.

Just a week after learning that the forthcoming X-Men: Apocalypse will focus on Magneto and Mystique’s relationship, Raven herself Jennifer Lawrence was asked about her shape-shifting character and where we’ll find her when the 2016 sequel begins. “She’s very complex,” Lawrence tells IGN. “She’s a hero to her own race in a way which makes her a villain to her opposite race. I don’t really know where she’s going to go. I’ve had a few conversations about where we’ll find her. She obviously needs to be in hiding somewhere.” X-Men: Apocalypse will also feature the return of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, but also younger versions of previously-seen characters such as Cyclops and Jean Grey, whom the filmmakers have begun testing for this week. Scripted by Simon Kinberg, Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris, X-Men: Apocalypse is set to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Bryan Singer will return to direct with production set to begin in Montreal in April, 2015 for a May 27, 2016 release.

These comments make a lot of sense. after what happens in X-Men; Days of Future Past then you understand why she is hiding. Now of course a lot of things will need to be explained from the end of Days of Future Past and the first time we see her in Apocalypse and I feel that we will found those things out. The one thing I don't like is that the film will be centered around a Magneto/Mystique love story when it should be focused on Apocalypse. Right now we'll just have to wait and see and I cannot wait to see this film.

We learned last month that Summit Entertainment has set first-time director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan on their long-gestating reboot of the Highlander franchise. Today, TheWrap brings word that Summit is keen on convincing Tom Cruise to play a role similar to the immortal Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, played in the 1986 original by the equally-immortal Sean Connery. The original Highlander also stars Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman who, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, is forced to confront one final foe: a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the prize that comes with being the last immortal. Although there’s no confirmation as to whether or not Cruise might have any inclination to join Highlander, knowing that he’s a top choice gives us some idea of the direction Nicolas-Troyan is heading with his remake. Cruise, who starred earlier this year in Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow, has a number of sequels on the way. First, he’ll be back as Ethan Hunt in the Christopher McQuarrie-helmed Mission: Impossible 5, hitting theaters December 25, 2015. He’ll then return as Jack Reacher for a big screen sequel to his 2012 action thriller (this one will be based on Lee Child’s most recent Reacher novel, “Never Go Back”) with plans to also reprise his role as Maverick in a followup to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun.

This is very interesting. Now before we start anything just be reminded that this is a rumor and nothing has been confirmed just yet. But it's interesting becuase Sean Connery is from Scotland and his accent fit in well with the films (even if the second film was awful). So Cruise has to do some work on his accent if this news becomes true.

Seemingly bolstered by the strong opening weekend of Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s Dumb and Dumber To, Paramount Pictures is moving forward with the long-awaited sequel to the 2001 comedy hit Zoolander! Deadline announces today that Penelope Cruz has just signed on for a role in Zoolander 2, which is set to be directed by Justin Theroux. Ben Stiller, who also directed the original, will reprise his role as dimwitted male supermodel Derek Zoolander with both Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson all-but-confirmed to return as Mugatu and Hansel, respectively. The original film had the unfortunate release date of September 28, 2001 and, finding a nation not quite ready for laughter, it grossed only $60 million worldwide. When the film hit DVD, however, it became a fast hit and plans for a sequel have been discussed for years. “For me and the people who are big fans of the movie, I want to make sure that we’re doing it in a way that we felt good about it,” Stiller told ComingSoon.net in an interview last year. “It takes a lot of elements to come together for that to happen.” At the moment, there is neither a timeframe for the project or word on who Cruz might be playing. Having worked as a professional model most of her life, however, it’s a safe bet that the Academy Award-winning actress will have some amusing real world experiences from which to draw.

This is great casting and i'm excited for this film. First off getting Penelope Cruz is great because she is hilarious and she's also an Academy Award winning actress. As for the film I'm really happy to see a sequel because I loved the first film and a second film be even more hilarious than the first film. Let's just hope everything goes well for the film.
