Weekend Movie News 11-28-14 to 11-30-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

In September, Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that a new animated short, titled Frozen Fever, was coming to theaters in Spring 2015, but what about a sequel to the 2013 blockbuster? Frozen is the No. 1 animated hit of all time (and fifth of all time of all movies) with $1.274 billion earned at the worldwide box office. In addition to that achievement, merchandise is still selling like crazy, there’s a rumored stage musical in the works and there’s a new attraction coming to the Norway Pavilion in Epcot that will replace the Maelstrom ride. And let’s not forget that the Frozen characters are now also appearing on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” in the Disney On Ice shows, and in Disney’s theme parks as well.

In other words, Frozen is everywhere, yet Disney has not said anything about the possibility of another movie. Now, however, it appears that Elsa herself, Idina Menzel, might have slipped up and mentioned the sequel. Talking with The Telegraph, the interviewer mentioned the upcoming short and the rumors of a sequel and stage musical. What could she say about them? “That they’re all in the works, ha ha!” She was then asked if she was signed up for all of them. “Ah, yeah sure… Not the stage show – I don’t know what will happen with that – but the movie hopefully. We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride,” she added. Menzel could just be talking about the short, but she did specifically say ‘movie.’ Walt Disney Animation Studios currently has an untitled movie scheduled for November 2018, but we’ll have to wait and see if that will be another feature-length story with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this news. On one hand I really enjoyed Frozen (it wasn't one of my favorite movies of last year) and I'm getting slightly annoyed with all of the Let it Go videos and other crap that the film spun-off, but it makes sense since this is a billion dollar franchise for Disney. On the other hand Frozen ended on such a great note and I just wish that they would just literally Let it Go,

The photo below is from the upcoming boxing drama Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal and yes that is him in the photo. Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua is directing the film, which tells the story of a welterweight boxing champion, Gyllenhaal’s Billy Hope, whose personal life is falling apart despite his professional success. The image debuted on the Golden Globe Awards’ official Twitter feed. Gyllenhaal, who stars in Southpaw opposite Naomie Harris, Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora, Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent, is in theaters now headlining writer/director Dan Gilroy’s stylish neo-noir thriller Nightcrawler. Readers who have already witnessed Gyllenhaal’s extremely gaunt transformation for that film are likely to be doubly-impressed by the actor’s polar opposite approach to Southpaw. Southpaw has been in development for some time, was originally set up at DreamWorks Pictures with Eminem planned to play the Hope role. Scripted by “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter, the film was at one time, said to be a “metaphorical” sequel to Curtis Hanson’s Academy Award-winning 8 Mile.

This is an amazing transformation. Now there have been some amazing transformations over time, but this one is just mind-blowing. Gyllenhaal looks like a complete badass and this looks like it will be an amazing film. Fuqua is an amazing director and we've seen what he can do with special actors and Gyllenhaal is a special actor.

20th Century Fox today announced the voice cast of The Peanuts Movie. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the cherished “Peanuts” gang will make their big-screen debut in state of the art 3D animation on November 6, 2015. In the film, Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. The Peanuts Movie comes from the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the “Ice Age” films.

Noah Schnapp voices the role of Good ol’ Charlie Brown, the lovable loser who never gives up. The young actor recently filmed a role opposite Tom Hanks in director Steven Spielberg’s untitled Cold War thriller. Most recently, Noah wrapped work on the indie film We Only Know So Much, based on the book of the same title. Hadley Belle Miller provides the voice for Lucy, known around the neighborhood (and by her little brother, Linus) for being crabby and bossy and humiliating Charlie Brown. Hadley’s voiceover credits include “Sofia the First” and “Jake and the Neverland Pirates,” and she has appeared on stage and in commercials. AJ Tecce voices Pig-Pen, who happily travels in his own private dust storm. AJ appeared in the films Raising Ethan and Stereopsis, and in several commercials. He’s also done extensive voiceover work.

Noah Johnston is Schroeder, a mini musical genius who is rarely separated from his toy piano or his idol, Beethoven. Noah voiced a role in Monsters University, and his television credits include “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” and “The Daily Show.” Newcomer Venus Schultheis voices Peppermint Patty, a fearless born leader and a natural athlete who is up to any challenge…except studying. Venus wants to be a nurse and a cosmetologist, working on people’s hair and nails while they are in the hospital or a nursing home. (If you see Venus’s hair, you’ll understand!) She enjoys snowboarding, skim boarding and tennis. Alexander Garfin gives voice to Linus, the benevolent, blanket-clutching philosopher who always has a kind word for everybody…even his bossy older sister, Lucy. Alexander’s numerous credits include the feature Salt, the television series “Law & Order SVU” and “Saturday Night Live,” and on stage, “On Borrowed Time” – and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. “

Francesca Capaldi voices Little Red-Haired Girl, who has captured Charlie Brown’s heart; now, if only he could muster the courage to speak to her! Francesca had a guest-starring role in Disney’s “A.N.T. Farm” and on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother,” is a series regular on Disney’s “Dog with the Blog,” and has appeared in the film 3-Day Test, as well as in several commercials. Mar Mar voices Frankin, Charlie Brown’s good friend and confidant, and the only one who never has an unkind word about our hapless hero, or anyone else for that matter. Mar Mar has worked on the TV series “Austin & Alley” (on the Disney Channel), “Guys with Kids,” “Bubble Guppies” and “Good Luck Charlie.” Mariel Sheets voices Sally, Charlie Brown’s little sister who believes the world owes her an answer for some of its most perplexing problems, such as: why does she have to go to school? Mariel has worked in film, appeared in national commercials, and done voiceovers for television, radio, and online.

Rebecca Bloom gives voice to Marcie, Peppermint Patty’s best friend, loyal follower, and complete opposite. Rebecca was featured on “The Tonight Show,” and has had roles on stage in “Annie,” “The Jungle Book” and “How to Eat Like a Child.” William Alexander Wunsch voices Shermy, Charlie Brown’s friend, who is straight laced and dependable. William has extensive live performance experience, appeared in several commercials, and on “Saturday Night Live” with Jim Carrey. Anastasia Bredikhina voices Patty, and Madisyn Shipman voices Violet – best friends who always side with the popular crowd. Anastasia is a trained actor, dancer, musician and model; Madisyn has appeared on “Modern Love,” “Sesame Street,” “Saturday Night Live” and “The Daily Show.”

I really enjoy this casting. Now I think it was obvious to all of us that the film was going to cast a lot of unknown actors and actresses because they are children and they are playing children. This could be a real steeping stone for the young cast and I hope they all have very successful and long careers.

Twentieth Century Fox has, according to Deadline, officially given the green light to the long-awaited Independence Day 2, putting the film on track for its previously announced June 24, 2016 release. That means that the alien invasion sequel will hit the big screen almost exactly 20 years after the original. The studio is eyeing a May production start and will now move to close the directing deal with Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, White House Down). As was previously reported, Will Smith is not coming back for the sequel. Additional casting is planned to begin as soon as Emmerich’s deal is officially signed. Right now, the studio has only given the green light to a single film. Previous updates have suggested that the studio would make two franchise sequels and film them back-to-back. Apparently, those planned have changed and any potential third film will be largely dependent on the second film’s success. The outlet also reports that Carter Blanchard, best known for the short-lived 2009 series “G vs E,” rewrote the first draft of the script that was done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then James Vanderbilt. Emmerich is also set to produced with Devlin and Harald Kloser. The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide.

This is great news. Now I have been against an Independence Day sequel from the very beginning simply because there is no need for one. But for everyone involved I'm glad they all have jobs and it will give them something to do. All I know is I just hope the film can try to live up to the original film just a little bit.

Following the first banner earlier this month, Warner Bros. Pictures has released a second banner for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice which you can check out below. Marking the first-ever adaptation of one of Pynchon’s novels, Inherent Vice begins when when private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin… well, easy for her to say. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newson, Inherent Vice hits limited theaters on December 12.

I really like this banner. Now it may cause some controversy, but listen folks it's just a movie. I really like how it uses the whole cast to depict The Last Supper and its kind of funny (but in a good way). I really love the cast and the trailers for the film have looked fantastic and I cannot wait to see the film.

My Review of Happy Christmas

So I recently watched Happy Christmas and I'm here to bring you my review. Son without further ado...

Happy Christmas poster.jpg

Irresponsible 20-something Jenny (played by Anna Kendrick) arrives in Chicago to live with her older brother Jeff (played by Joe Swanberg), a young filmmaker living a happy existence with his novelist wife Kelly (played by Melanie Lynskey) and their two-year-old son. Jenny's arrival shakes up their quiet domesticity as she and her friend Carson (played by Lena Dunham) instigate an evolution in Kelly's life and career.

This was a really nice film. It has a really comedic cast, but they all give really great dramatic performances especially Anna Kendrick and Melanie Lynskey. All of the actors (there is a very limited amount of them) have really great chemistry with each other. Joe Swanberg (who both directs and acts in the film) does a really great job of getting everyone to work togehter and the script (which Swanberg wrote as well) just flows so well together that your focused on every detail in the film. The film has a great concept, but its been done a lot in a bunch of different movies and the film was really predictable it some points. Also the film has a very short runtime of 78 minutes and I feel like some of it was rushed just to get to a resolution. Overall the film has a lot of witty and smart dialogue with some great performances, but its an overdone concept that is sometimes too predictable. I give Happy Christmas a 7 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Happy Christmas, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Review of Penguins of Madagascar

So I recently watched Penguins of Madagascar and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Penguins of Madagascar poster.jpg

Super spy teams aren't born...they're hatched. Discover the secrets of the greatest and most hilarious covert birds in the global espionage biz: Skipper (voiced by Tom McGrath), Kowalski (voiced by Chris Miller) , Rico (voiced by Conrad Vernon) and Private (voiced by Christopher Knights). These elitists of the elite are joining forces with a chic undercover organization, The North Wind. Led by handsome and husky Agent Classified (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). Together, they must stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine (voiced by John Malkovich), from destroying the world as we know it.

This was a fun little film. If you had to do spin-off films for two different animated franchises, then Madagascar and Despicable Me are the two to do it from. These penguins are the best part of every single Madagascar film and seeing them in their first full film togehter by themselves is one hilarious outing. There are a lot of the jokes that are just simply gut-busting and they had me rolling in the floor. I also really liked the supporting cast which has the voice talents of Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich and Ken Jeong and they really do their jobs well. The story has a few bumps in the road, a lot of the jokes don't always hit the target and here lately most animated films have had a lot of adult humor and this one is mainly geared towards kids (as it should be), but i felt eh film could have used a few more subtle adult jokes. Overall this film is great for the whole family to see during the holidays, but it's not a must-see theater experience. I give Penguins of Madagascar a 7.5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Penguins of Madagascar, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard

My Reaction to the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer

If you haven't heard, some small movie called Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens released its teaser trailer on this glorious Black Friday and I'm here to bring you my reaction to it. So without further ado...

Starwarsviitheforceawakens.jpg

Here's the trailer for you if you haven't seen it

My initial reaction was OH MY LORD. After months of rumors and speculation on who was going to be in the film, to actually realizing that the film is going to happen to what the trailer would look like, everything has been built up to this. I;m going to breakdown the trailer scene by scene simply because the trailer allows me too.

  • First off seeing the dessert of Tatooine instantly got me excited and then we see John Boyega (who has been described as the main lead for the film) in a Stormtrooper outfit which has made a few people mad. I say that because the prequels introduced us to the Clone Troopers who were made from one human (Jango Fett) and they are all the same in every feature. What I took the scene is that Boyega's character was disguised as a Stormtrooper to escape the Empire's clutches (an omage to Han and Luke being disguised to help Leia escape the Death Star) so if that's the route we are going I'm ok with it.
  • We also begin to hear the voice-over and many people have speculated on who it could be from Benedict Cumberbatch (who was rumored to be in the film, but not confirmed), Adam Driver (who from rumors will be the so-called Anakin of the new trilogy) and to who I think it is Andy Serkis (who we have no idea who he is playing). All I know is that after hearing the voice-over we now understand why the film is called The Force Awakens and it also gave me chills
  • Next we see a little throwaway scene of a droid rolling on a ball of some sort and it will just most likely introduce to someone new when we see the full film
  • Then we see the Stormtroopers in a helicarrier to drop them off for battle and that really gets me wondering what type of battle will they be in.
  • We then get a shot of Daisy Ridley who looks to be running from somebody (maybe the new villain or Stormtroopers)  and she jumps on a new type of speeder and along the way she could bump into John Boyega's character.
  • Then we get a shot of Oscar Issacs as an X-Wing pilot and this could be apart of the big end air battle scene or just an air raid on an old Imperial base. I also really like seeing the X-Wing's fly across water and I instantly knew this film is going to be epic
  • But the biggest thing from the trailer was seeing the mysterious cloaked figure walking through the snow in the woods and then turning on his three sided lightsaber (when that I happened I geeked out so hard) and this could be a number of people from Adam Driver to Lupita Nyong'o to Max Von Sydow it's untelling at this point.
  • and finally we get to the big climatic scene of the trailer which involves the Millennium Falcon flying through the dessert of Tatooine fighting Tie-Fighters. It also packed that big punch with the score that the Phantom Menace trailer did when is was just a black screen with words on the screen and then shifted to the podracing scene.
All I know is this was a perfect teaser trailer and it got me even more excited for the film and I'm so mad that we have to wait til December of next year to see the final product.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens teaser trailer and what are some of your thoughts and opinions on what each scene signifies? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

                                                                                                                           Jonah Sparks

My Review of Horrible Bosses 2

So I recently watched Horrible Bosses 2 and I'm here to bring you my review. So without furhter ado...

Horrible Bosses 2.jpg

After Nick (played by Jason Bateman), Dale (played by Charlie Day), and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) decide to launch their own business, Burt Hanson (played by Christoph Waltz), a savvy investor, appears to take them down. With no other viable option in sight, the trio decide to kidnap Hanson's son Rex (played by Chris Pine) in order to put up a ransom to take back their business.

This film was alright, but it's not as good as the first film. The first film had a lot of originality to and it and this film really just rehashes a lot of the jokes from the first film. Granted it was really nice to see the main trio back on the big screen togehter as they have amazing chemistry, but not all of the newer jokes don't really hit home. I also really liked seeing Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston returning from the original film and while they do they same routine they do have a lot of great moments. But most of all I absolutely enjoyed the additions of Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz to the cast as they have the best jokes in the film and the best moments in the film. Overall the film has a great cast with a film new jokes sprinkled in, but it rehashes a lot of the same jokes and plot-lines from the first film. I give Horrible Bosses 2 a 5.5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Horrible Bosses 2, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

11-26-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Although plans are still underway for Alcon Entertainment to bring to the big screen a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner, Scott today reveals to Variety that he is no longer targeting the director’s chair. Having already helped develop the screenplay alongside Hampton Fancher (who, with David Peoples, wrote the original film), Scott remains very active in the sequel’s development, but now says his plan is to serve only as producer with a helmer expected to be announced in the near future. “We talked at length about what it could be,” Scott tells the trade of the sequel’s story, “and came up with a pretty strong three-act storyline.” The project, which is planned to go into production next year, should feature the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard. Scott has a few potential spoilers, too, regarding Deckard’s specific role in the story. “Harrison is very much part of this one,” Scott continues, “But it’s really about finding him. He comes in in the third act.”

This is exciting news to hear. Now granted nothing official has come from Warner Bros. about the sequel, but I have no doubt that they confirm something very soon. I'm also kind of glad Ridley Scott isn't directing this simply because his recent track record hasn't been the greatest, but there is hope for Exodus: Gods & Kings and if that does well then I'll start believing in him again. I'm a huge fan of the original Blade Runner and I've been dying for a sequel for a really long time.

After switching studios from Sony to Universal and leading men from Christian Bale to Michael Fassbender, the Steve Jobs biopic continues full speed ahead as Deadline reports that Oscar-winner Natalie Portman has boarded the film. While the article makes no claims as to who the actress is playing, it would be hard to imagine it is anyone other than the Apple head honcho’s daughter, Lisa Bennan-Jobs . Steve Jobs initially denied his paternity of Lisa, all the while naming one of Apple’s earliest computers–the Apple Lisa–after her. The two reconnected years later and Jobs paid for her to attend Harvard University, coincidentally around the same time that Portman called that school her alma matter. Portman recently completed her feature directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness and starring in the western Jane Got a Gun. She is also expected to reprise her role as Jane Foster in 2017′s Thor: Ragnarok. Based on Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography “Steve Jobs,” Universal’s currently untitled Jobs movie will be written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle, while Scott Rudin, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady produce.

This is pretty great casting. Natalie Portman is an Academy Award winning actress and casting her in anything is a great idea. She also looks like Lisa Jobs and I think that she is a perfect fit.  This film has done some pretty great casting so far and hopefully they lock down Fassbender for Steve Jobs.

As James Cameron tinkers away in New Zealand on Avatar 2, 3 and 4, he took the time to talk to Empire about the three back-to-back sequels that are expected to head into production imminently for release in 2016, ’17 and ’18, and he seemed rather pumped about what he has in store. “I can tell you one thing about them,” Cameron laughs. “They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will sh*t yourself with your mouth wide open.” Never one to rest on his laurels, the director had originally intended to shoot the new movies at 60 frames-per-second, but now it seems he’s switched gears on that front due to the fact that 48 FPS has already been somewhat established with The Hobbit movies. “My thinking at the time was that 60 [FPS] might be a better segue to the video market,” he says. “I’ll be plugging into a system that’s a little more mature, so it makes sense for me to do 48 frames at this point.”

These are some pretty cocky comments. Look if you have the abilities, the expertise and the filmography  that Cameron has then its ok to be cocky every now and then. All I can say is that with these films taking so long they better be as good as Cameron is talking them up to be. I really enjoyed Avatar for what is was worth (eventhough it ripped off a few other films), but I'm really excited to be visiting Pandora once again

Few people in Hollywood spin as many plates as Guillermo del Toro, and he’s got some big plates in the air at the moment. His next film, Crimson Peak, debuts in October of 2015 and after that he plans on making a smaller film before transitioning back to the world of Kaiju and Jaegers with Pacific Rim 2. Speaking with Collider, del Toro was asked about the sequel and revealed some new details on where we will find the world and its characters. “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.” Del Toro went on to reveal that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman’s characters will return for the sequel and that fans will be getting more of the “science” of the world. “You’re gonna get a lot of that,” he said, “but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”

Another project Guillermo has been working on is a script for Dark Universe or “Justice League Dark,” a film that sees the characters from the dark side of the DCU, such as John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and Swamp Thing, come together to stop an ultimate evil. Now, Forbes has learned that the script for the film has been completed and is in the hands of WB’s executives, meaning a decision about further progress on the film could come any day now. Back at the San Diego Comic-Con, Guillermo revealed to us that the project was separate from the other DC films for the time being, but that eventually they would all come together. No release date has been set for Justice League Dark, but Pacific Rim 2 will stomp into theaters on April 7, 2017. Which of these projects are you most looking forward to?

This is pretty interesting news. First let's start off with Pacific Rim 2. Now it's obvious that the film will take place a few years after the first films events, but it'll be interesting to see how the world has developed after the events after the first film. Now with Justice League Dark it is very interesting to see what happens with it. Constantine is a major part of the group and right now the tv isn't doing the greatest and I don't know if Warner Bros. will want to risk putting him in the film. Also it makes sense for the film to get made simply because Warner Bros. has mentioned that there will be separate movies taking place during the major film's timeline and they could potentially cross, but as for right now will just have to wait and see.

20th Century Fox has released the new poster for The Peanuts Movie featuring Snoopy and Woodstock dreaming big and you can check it out below. In The Peanuts Movie, a 3D, CGI-animated comedic adventure, Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace! – embarks upon his greatest mission as he and his team take to the skies to pursue their arch-nemesis, while his best pal Charlie Brown begins his own epic quest back home. The most popular and influential comic strip of all time, “Peanuts” was read every day by 355 million people in 75 countries. In addition to the famous strip, “Peanuts” holiday television specials such as “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” have won Emmys and continue to be among the highest rated prime time TV specials. The Peanuts Movie is coming to theaters on November 6, 2015.

peanutsposter

This is a really great poster. It's simple and it also paints a very iconic image in the history of The Peanuts. I'm a huge fan of The Peanuts and the trailer just looked so amazing that I'm just really excited for this film and I cannot wait to see it.

                                                                                                                                         Jonah Sparks

My Top 10 Favorite Football Movies of All-Time

It's a longstanding tradition for football to be played on Thanksgiving day. We gather around our TV's to watch football while we eat or just to give everyone something to do after the feast has taken place. With that being said I'm going top give you my top 10 favorite football movies of all-time. So without further ado...

10. Gridiron Gang
Gridiron gang.jpg

This film is really inspiring and really emotional. Sean Porter (played by The Rock) is a detention camp probation officer who oversees the inmates at Camp Kilpatrick in Los Angeles and isn't willing to simply write off the violent offenders who have been placed in his care. Though their prospects for the future are decidedly bleak, Porter is convinced that if he can just get through to his adolescent inmates they may finally be able to turn their lives around and make amends for the mistakes of their past. When Porter's proposal of forming a high-school-level football team at Camp Kilpatrick meets with skepticism and resistance in the highest ranks, the determined coach puts his career on the line to prove that even convicted criminals can acquire the tools needed to build a brighter future when given the proper motivation and the means of doing so. Gridiron Gang has a rating of 42% on rottentomatoes.com.

9. The Replacements
Replacements ver3.jpg

This film is flat out hilarious and it does give us a look at what could happen if we had an actual strike in a major professional sport. The Washington Sentinels are one of the strongest teams in pro football -- until contract negotiations break down and the Sentinels go on strike. Determined to play the team's schedule, owner Edward O'Neil (played by Jack Warden) recruits a ragtag band of scab players, to be headed up and whipped into shape by the retired veteran coach Jimmy McGinty (played by Gene Hackman). At the top of the recruitment list is quarterback Shane Falco (played by Keanu Reeves), a promising athlete until a catastrophic defeat in the Sugar Bowl dashed his confidence. Joining Falco on the team are Clifford Franklin (played by Orlando Jones), a receiver who can't catch the ball; Nigel Gruff (played by Rhys Ifans), a chain-smoking Welsh soccer player; Bateman (played by Jon Favreau), a former cop with anger management problems; Fumiko (played by Ace Yonamine), a sumo wrestler new to football; and Wilkinson (played by Michael Jace), a convict on parole to the Sentinels. Can McGinty mold his new squad of misfits and no-hopers (who truly love the game) into a winning team? The Replacements has a rating of 40% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. Varsity Blues
Varsity Blues (1999 film) poster.jpg

This film to me is really a true life story in a way to me and what I went through. In his 35th year as head coach, Bud Kilmer (played by Jon Voight) is trying to lead his West Canaan Coyotes to their 23rd division title. Uncompromising and omnipotent, Kilmer is deified in the small Texas town, as long as the team is winning. But when star quarterback Lance Harbor (played by Paul Walker) suffers a season-ending injury, the Coyotes are forced to regroup under the questionable leadership of second-string quarterback Jonathan Moxon (played by James Van Der Beek). His irreverent attitude and approach to football come into direct conflict with the coach's inflexible game plan. Varsity Blues has a rating of 40% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. The Longest Yard (1974)
Longest yard 1974.jpg

This movie is absolutely hilarious and it really has a lot of quotable lines that the remake could never top. Ex-football star Paul Crewe (played by Burt Reynolds) ends up in a prison run by sadistic sports-nut Warden Hazen (played by Eddie Albert). Strong-armed into forming an inmate football team, Crewe manages to instill an esprit de corps previously lacking in the prisoners' lives. Besides, they now have the chance to beat the guards' football team, headed by the hissable Capt. Knauer (played by Ed Lauter). Hazen orders Crewe to throw the match; otherwise, Crewe will never get the pardon he's been promised.

6. Necessary Roughness
Necessary roughness poster.jpg

This is another hilarious football movie and it really does portray what happened to the SMU football program back in the 1980's when it received the "Death Penalty". A Texas university football team, desperate for a win, takes to unorthodox recruiting and gets in trouble for it. As a result the coach (played by Héctor Elizondo) is forced to look to actual students for potential players. Fortunately, he finds salvation in the form of a thirty-something man (played by Scott Bakula) with a phenomenal throwing arm. Necessary Roughness has a rating of 32% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. We Are Marshall
We-are-marshall-lores.jpg

I love sports movies (especially football movies) and this one is just simply amazing, heartfelt and inspiring. A true story of tragedy, hope, and resilience comes to the screen in this sports drama. Huntington, WV, is home to Marshall University, a school where college football is a way of life. Huntington is also a town that learned to deal with tragedy in the fall of 1970 when Marshall's "Thundering Herd" boarded an airliner to return home after a football game in North Carolina. The jet crashed into a hill due to bad weather, and 75 members of Marshall's football squad and athletic staff died that night. The accident dealt a crippling blow to the city of Huntington, as well as Marshall's faculty and student body, and university president Donald Dedmon (played by David Strathairn) considered abandoning the school's football program. But instead Coach Jack Lengyel (played by Matthew McConaughey) was recruited from Ohio's College of Wooster to rebuild Marshall's football program. Lengyel was not naïve about the task ahead of him, and working beside Red Dawson (played by Matthew Fox), an assistant coach who narrowly missed the doomed flight and was one of the program's only survivors, he came to understand his job was not just to put a team on the field, but help a college and a community heal their wounds from the tragic accident. Together Lengyel and Dawson turned a handful of rookies and second-string players into a competitive team who in 1971 showed the world what they could do in a legendary game against Marshall's rivals, Xavier University. We Are Marshall has a rating of 49% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. The Program
File:The program movie.jpg

This film does an amazing job of showing how dirty college football can be behind the scenes. Eastern State University isn't particularly notable for anything except its football program. Lately, even that hasn't been doing too well, and the athletic staff led by Coach Winters (played by James Caan) are under considerable pressure by the administration and alumni to bring in a winning season. To do that, he has to recruit some able, promising young players out of high school. It's not too surprising to learn that he will do almost anything to get these kids, and its even less surprising that, as long as they keep producing on the field, he and the college will overlook almost any obnoxious behavior the boys can perpetrate to the limit of their ability. The Program has a rating of 42% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. Friday Night Lights
File:Friday night lights ver2.jpg

I am a huge fan of high school football (as I did play football in high school) and This movie epitomizes what  high school football is really like. A drama that chronicles the entire 1988 season of the Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas, with football players, coaches, mothers, fathers, pastors, boosters, fans and families struggling with ongoing personal conflicts while the team fights for a state championship. A town for sale, Odessa, Texas has seen better days--the financial bust evident in its boarded-up shops and broken lives. Yet one hope sustains the community where, once a week during the fall, the town and its dreams come alive beneath the dazzling and disorienting Friday night-lights. When the Permian High Panthers take to the field. In a city where economic uncertainty has eroded the spirit of its inhabitants, nearly everyone seeks comfort in the religion of the Friday night ritual, where the unfulfilled dreams of an entire community are shifted onto the shoulder pads of a team of high-school athletes. Friday Night Lights has a rating of 81% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. Remember the Titans
File:Remember the titansposter.jpg

This film is very emotional and its a movie that I think we should all watch due to everything going on around us. Based on actual events that took place in 1971, a white southern high school is integrated with black students from a nearby school. Both schools are recognized for their football programs which are now unified. The black coach is chosen to be the head coach of the integrated team, leaving the previous white head coach with feelings of animosity at having to be an assistant under a black man. Remember the Titans has a rating of 73% on rottentomatoes.com.

1. Any Given Sunday
File:Any Given Sunday.jpg

This movie at one point was my favorite movie of all-time but thanks to other movies it slipped a little down my list and it really does give an in-depth look at professional football. Although professional football provides the action-packed backdrop of Any Given Sunday, the film takes a simultaneously epic and intimate look at the men and women who comprise the milieu of the film, from the modern-day gladiators of the gridiron, their coaches and often beleaguered families, to the moneyed team owners and business concerns who attempt to control the game as big business, to the hungry sports media, and hangers-on trying to get a taste of the glamour. Any Given Sunday has a rating of 50% on rottentomatoes.com.

So ladies and gentlemen what are some of your favorite football movies and what did you think of my list? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

11-25-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Despite previously revealing that the trailer for Jurassic World would debut the evening of Thanksgiving, Universal Pictures has released the trailer two days early and you can check it out below and let us know your thoughts in the comments. Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, the anticipated movie stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D’Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley. Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

This was an awesome trailer. I've dying to see this trailer and now that it is out I'm even more excited for the film than I already was. It did a great job of not showing everything from the movie and it lets us have the ability to not spoil ourselves. It's also weird that they decided to go ahead and release the trailer now opposed to Friday when Universal said they would, but I guess they wanted to go ahead and build momentum before the star Wars trailer hits and not let it be overshadowed by that. I'm just so glad the trailer is out and I cannot wait to see the movie.

It was just over a week ago that word broke that Warner Bros. Pictures was keen on signing “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” director Michelle MacLaren to helm their long-awaited DC Comics adaptation Wonder Woman. Today, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the deal is done! MacLaren will both develop and direct the solo film with Charles Roven and Zack and Deborah Snyder producing. Gal Gadot is already set to headline Wonder Woman with the character planned to make her first cinematic appearance in 2016′s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She may even make additional appearances across DC’s new cinematic universe before her solo film sees release on June 23, 2017. It’s pretty much a guarantee, too, that Wonder Woman is also going to play an important role in Justice League Part One, hitting theaters November 10, 2017. Recent rumors have suggested that, as a franchise, Wonder Woman is being targeted for development as a trilogy with the first film planned to take place in the 1920s, revealing Themyscira’s first encounter with the outside world and Wonder Woman’s own experiences with a USA that still had a lot to learn about equal rights. Then, it is alleged, a sequel would take place in the 1940s and will be set against the backdrop of World War II. A third film, then, would finally bring Wonder Woman’s solo adventures to a contemporary setting. Take all of that with a grain of salt, however. MacLaren’s directing credits also include episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “The Leftovers” and the upcoming “Breaking Bad” spinoff “Better Call Saul.” She’s also well-known for serving as co-executive producer on the final two seasons of FOX’s “The X-Files.”

This is amazing news and a great choice. MacLaren  is an amazing director and I think she is the perfect choice for this film. Like I said when she was rumored a couple of weeks ago, she could be the DC universe's version of Alan Taylor who directed episodes of Game of Thrones and then went on to direct Thor: The Dark World  and Wonder Woman is in the same realm as this when it comes to mythology. I really like the choice and I cannot wait to she how she handles this film.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. dropped a slew of images from director Joe Wright’s lavishly fractured take on Peter Pan, and now we have our first moving look at Hugh Jackman’s Blackbeard, his flying ship and the title character of Pan in the first trailer, which you can view below. Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, Pan follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny-to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan. Warner Bros.’ blockbuster fantasy Pan stars Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Nonso Anozie, Amanda Seyfried, Rooney Mara, Adeel Akhtar and Levi Miller, and will be released on July 17, 2015.

I really enjoyed this trailer. I wasn't really for sure how I would feel about this film and now that I've seen the trailer the film has really peaked my interest. Hugh Jackman looks amazing as Blackbeard and I really like that Captain Hook isn't the main villain for the film. Another good thing is that we get to see a Peter Pan origins story which we've never seen before and I'm really looking forward to the film.

Mark Ruffalo’s Dylan Rhodes had some prettystartling reveals in the first Now You See Me, which makes it logical that Ruffalo (via his Instagram account) should reveal the sequel’s subtitle Now You See Me: The Second Act. This falls into what fellow returning star Michael Caine said in another magic-themed movie, The Prestige, about magicians having three distinct acts to every trick: The Pledge, The Turn and The Prestige. The Turn is described in The Prestige as a point when, “the magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you’re looking for the secret… but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet.” One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their mind-bending spectacles, the Four Horsemen resurface in Now You See Me: The Second Act only to find themselves face to face with a new enemy who enlists them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet. Jon M. Chu is directing Now You See Me: The Second Act, which features returning stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman along with franchise newcomers Daniel Radcliffe, Lizzy Caplan and Jay Chou. It’s set for a June 10, 2016 release.

This is a really great title. When you're talking about a magic show they tend to be in acts and a sequel to a magician themed film then a The Second Act is a great title. I enjoyed the first film (I wasn't a huge fan) and seeing the cast that they have assembled for the film really gets me curious about this film and makes me want to see it.

The winding saga of the Steve Jobs biopic continues ever on after Sony recently put the film into turnaround, which according to The Hollywood Reporter has led to Universal swiftly taking over the project with Danny Boyle remaining in the directors chair and Aaron Sorkin still scripting. Acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender is currently attached to play the enigmatic Apple CEO in a compressed story that has him dramatically interacting with figures such as co-founder Steve Wozniak and former CEO John Sculley. This movie’s tortured saga has seen a much maligned rival project (2013′s JOBS) come and go from theaters while influential directors (David Fincher) and big movie stars (Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale) courted the film only to drop out, but Universal picking up the slack could be just the shot in the arm the beleaguered biopic needs. Universal has a history of picking up trouble projects from other studios, as they did when they snatched up recent hit Dumb and Dumber To after Warner Bros. passed on it. When Christian Bale was still attached at Sony, funnyman Seth Rogen was in talks to play mischievous prankster computer genius Wozniak while Jessica Chastain–currently hot off of Interstellar and A Most Violent Year–was rumored for an unknown part as well. In his interview with Bloomberg (via Apple Insider), Sorkin indicated that both Apple’s original head of Mac marketing Joanna Hoffman and Steve Jobs’ daughter Lisa would play major roles in the story, either of which could be a rich role for Chastain. Based on Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography “Steve Jobs,” Universal’s currently untitled Jobs movie will be produced by Scott Rudin, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady.

This is great news to hear. This is a film that needs to be made and it's a story that would easily work on the big screen. It has gone through a lot and now that Universal has picked up the film I really think that it'll get going on the right track and hopefully they can lock down someone to play Steve Jobs. I would have preferred Christian Bale, but I would be ok with Michael Fassbender in the role. Like I said with a new studio this film will more than likely  get made and I cannot wait to see it when it comes out.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

                                                                                                                                         Jonah Sparks

My Review of Horrible Bosses

So with Horrible Bosses 2 being released this week, I thought it would be fitting to review its predecessor Horrible Bosses. So without further ado...

 Horrible Bosses.jpg

For Nick (played by Jason Bateman), Kurt (played by Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (played by Charlie Day), the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses (played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston respectively) into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con (played by Jamie Foxx), the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers... permanently. There's only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

This was a really surprising film. From the trailers you know the film is automatically funny simply because of the main three leads and the trailers did not disappoint. The main three (Bateman, Sudeikis and Day) have amazing chemistry and really feed off of each other and have great comedic timing. I also really like the supporting cast (mainly the bosses) and the real standout is Kevin Spacey who pretty much plays Kevin Spacey. Now I will say while the premise is interesting, it's not really executed well and a lot of the jokes fall flat and make the movie have a lot of awkward moments. Overall it's fun film with a great cast, but the jokes and the story don'ht help the movie at all. I give Horrible Bosses an 8 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Horrible Bosses, what would you rate it, are you excited for Horrible Bosses 2 and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

11-24-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Although The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy was recently rumored for the role, Variety has just revealed that the X-Men: Apocalypse villain role (almost certainly the titular En Sabbah Nur) has gone to Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Oscar Isaac. Apocalypse (that blueish fellow featured in the “Days of Future Past” post-credits tease), was created by Louise and Walter Simonson. The character made his debut in “X-Factor” #6. The world’s first mutant, En Sabah Nur was born in Egypt around 3,000 BC and used advanced technology to make himself an eternal conquerer, believing whole heartedly in survival of the fittest. Isaac’s recent credits include the title role in Joel and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis and, set for release on December 31, J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, wherein Isaac headlines opposite Jessica Chastain. Confirmed to star James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult (with more names expected to be confirmed shortly), X-Men: Apocalypse is scripted by Simon Kinberg, Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse is also rumored to feature appearances by a number of familiar characters, including younger versions of Cyclops and Phoenix. Cameras will start rolling on the X-Men: Apocalypse in Montreal beginning April, 2015 for a May 27, 2016 release.

This is great casting. Oscar Issacs is a very talented actor and some believe that he should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Inside Llewyn Davis (I personally don't think so). With that being said I think he is a great choice for the role and  eventhough I would've liked to see Tom Hardy in it, this possibly frees Hardy up to be in the Suicide Squad (he's been rumored for a part in the film) and maybe he can fufill my dream casting of him playing Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke. But as for Issacs I really like the casting and I cannot wait to see him in the role.

Just two weeks after initially reporting that two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz would play the main antagonist in the upcoming Bond 24, The Daily Mail is back and reports that Waltz will play none other than James Bond’s nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Production is expected to begin on the sequel next month. It was revealed over a year ago that MGM had settled with writer Kevin McClory regarding the rights to the Blofeld character and the infamous SPECTRE organization, which sparked rumors they could appear in future films, and now it appears that could be a reality. Blofeld has been heard or seen in six of the previous James Bond films and was previously played by Donald Pleasence, Telly Savalas and Charles Gray. Set for release on November 6, 2015, the Bond 24 will see Waltz join Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Dave Bautista. Sam Mendes returns to direct the film, which is produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

If this is true then I'm all for it. Blofeld is one of the most recognizable villains in James Bond lore and I think waltz would be perfect for the role. Plus with the rumor that Dave Bautista could be the news Jaws it feels like they are semi remaking a Bond film and it's unclear which one. All I can say is that I'm excited to see waltz in a Bond film and if its Blofeld then it's even better.

Fans will get their first taste of Disney’s Star Wars-verse when the Force Awakens trailer hits theaters this Friday, yet the folks at /Film have looked away to the future, to the horizon, to the spin-off film that Gareth Edwards is directing and Gary Whitta is writing for December 16, 2016 release, and the site claims to know the plot. File this under rumor control, but the first Star Wars spin-off will purportedly be about a heist to steal the plans for the Death Star. Yep, THOSE plans, the ones keistered deep in R2-D2′s crevices during events of 1977′s A New Hope, the ones that eventually turn the tide for the rebellion… Except it won’t be rebels stealing them, it will be bounty hunters.

Even more intriguing than this heist picture concept–”The Empire Job,” if you will–is the detail that the leader of the thieves will be a major character in The Force Awakens, which could be Max von Sydow’s character if age factors into it at all. Of course, any discussion of bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe immediately brings to mind thoughts of Boba Fett, everyone’s favorite piece of Sarlacc food, and the site goes on to speculate that Fett might be part of the heist crew. This goes sharply against what we’ve heard through the grapevine, which is that there IS a Boba Fett solo film (possibly written by Lawrence Kasdan) and it is most certainly NOT directed by Gareth Edwards.

That said, there is nothing stopping Lucasfilm from making Fett a lynchpin character in both or all three spin-offs, yet it doesn’t make too much sense for Darth Vader to hire the mandalorian in Empire Strikes Back if that’s the guy who stole the plans for the Death Star… unless Boba winds up betraying his fellow thieves in the spin-off? Tres confusing. The article also mentions that the Millennium Falcon will be involved but Han Solo will not, which begs even more questions: Does Lando have the ship? How long before A New Hope does this story take place? If you remember the Death Star was just starting construction at the end of Revenge of the Sith, which means it took Vader and the Empire nearly twenty years to complete it… presumably with non-union labor.

This is very interesting news. Now granted it's a rumor, but if true I'm actually behind it. seeing a heist film in the Star Wars universe would be amazing and to see Bounty Hunters as well makes me even more excited for the film. I would actually prefer and simple Boba Fett film and pretty much explain how he got out of the pit and continued his life. All I know is that this sounds interesting and no matter what it's about I'll be first in line to see it.

J.K. Rowling has completed the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first film in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming trilogy, producer David Heyman told The Telegraph. At the premiere of his new film, Paddington, Heyman said that “Jo [Rowling] has written a wonderful script. It’s early stages. David Yates is directing and we start filming next year. I’m just really excited about it.” The November 18, 2016 release is inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the adventures of the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway. The second and third “Fantastic Beasts” films are scheduled for release on November 16, 2018 and November 20, 2020.

This is really great news. Now just because a script is finished it doesn't mean anything official is happening. A Lot of things could go wrong and production could halt, but I highly doubt that. The next official news we'll get is who some of the cast will be. I'm a fan of harry Potter and to see a "spin-off" film in the same universe gets me really excited.

Though he’s been optimistic for months about a potential return, Frank Grillo recently spoke with EW and said he’s been all but officially invited back for the forthcoming Captain America: Civil War. “[Winter Soldier] was only a taste of what’s to come with the next film, and I couldn’t be more humbled and excited,” Grillo said. “They just kind of called and said, ‘What kind of shape are you in? We’re going to need a body scan.’ They scan your body so that whatever you wear fits you like a glove….We all know what Crossbones represents in his world, so when they called me and said we gotta do the body scan, I was like ‘Okay!’” Grillo’s Brock Rumlow isn’t the only Marvel character that’s returning for the film as Robert Downey Jr. will appear as Tony Stark and Jeremy Renner says there are “whispers” of Hawkeye making an appearance. Alongside those characters are Daniel Bruhl in a mystery role and Chadwick Boseman who will make his MCU debut as Black Panther, before getting his own solo film in November of 2017. Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and is set for release on May 6, 2016.

This is pretty great news to hear. Now he hasn't officially been confirmed to come back yet, but in all likelihood he will be. crossbones is a very underrated villain in the Marvel comic universe and to get to see him on the big screen will be amazing. All I can say is that this film is shaping up to be absolutely amazing.
