Weekend Movie News 1-8-16 to 1-10-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

STX Entertainment has revealed the first trailer for the Civil War action-drama Free State of Jones, starring Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, Dallas Buyers Club). You can check out the Free State of Jones trailer below. Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. The film co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, “House of Cards”). The film is being produced by Scott Stuber (Ted, Safe House) through his Blue Grass Films shingle, with Jon Kilik (Foxcatcher, The Hunger Games) producing through his Jon Kilik Productions, and Ross producing through his Larger Than Life Productions. STX Entertainment will release the movie nationwide on May 13, 2016.

This was a really brilliant trailer. It was intense and emotional and it just packed a really powerful punch. It looks like McConaughey is back in role that was similar to the one had in We Are Marshall, but with a lot more at stake. This film seems like it would be an Oscar contender and I'm a little surprised that it is coming out in the summer. The marketing people know more than me, but I think this is a film that could easily be a contender and it's a film I am dying to see.

The film based on the true story of one of the most famous photographs in United States history, the Elvis & Nixon trailer has just arrived (via IMDb) and can be viewed below. The historical comedy stars two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) and Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon (Man of Steel). Elvis & Nixon follows two men at the height of their powers, conscious they could not stay on top forever, both ripped with fear of the inevitable, sharing one famous private moment in the Oval office. The film recounts the morning of December 21st 1970, when the King of Rock’ n Roll (Shannon) showed up on the White House lawn to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Richard Nixon (Spacey). He had a very urgent request: to be sworn in as an undercover Federal Agent at large. This intimate moment in the Oval office between two men at the height of their powers has never been told. Co-starring Evan Peters, Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Letts and singer Sky Ferreira, Elvis & Nixon is directed by Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship) from a screenplay by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and actor Cary Elwes, best known for The Princess Bride. Elvis & Nixon is slated to hits theaters this April.

This looks like it could be a fun film to watch. Kevin Spacey and Micheal Shannon are two tremendous actors working in the business and to put them on the big screen together is a great idea and it looks like they have a lot of chemistry between each other. I was figuring this film to be more of a drama, but to see that it's a comedy is pleasant surprise and now I'm even more intrigued to see it.

Aaron Sorkin will make his directorial debut on Molly’s Game, according to Deadline. Sorkin became attached to write the adaptation of Molly Bloom’s memoir in late 2014, but he will now sit in the director’s chair as well. Released in June of 2014, the book is described as follows: When Molly Bloom was a little girl growing up in a small Colorado town, she watched her brothers win medals, ace tests, and receive high praise from everyone they met. Molly wanted nothing more than to bask in that glow a little herself, so she pushed herself too—as a student, as an athlete. She was successful but felt like she was always coming from behind. She wanted to break free, to find a life without rules and limits, a life where she didn’t have to measure up to anyone or anything—where she could become whatever she wanted. Molly wanted more, and she got more than she could have ever bargained for. In Molly’s Game, Molly Bloom takes the reader through her adventures running an exclusive high-stakes private poker game. Her clients ranged from iconic stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck to politicians and financial titans so powerful they moved markets and changed the course of history. With rich detail, Molly describes a world that until now has been shrouded in glamour, privilege, and secrecy, one where she fearlessly took on the Russian and Italian mobs—until she met the one adversary she could not outsmart, even though she had justice on her side: the United States government. Molly’s Game is an incredible coming-of-age story about a young girl who rejected convention in pursuit of her version of the American dream. It’s the story of how she gained—and then lost—her place at the table, and of everything she learned about poker, love, and life in the process. Mark Gordon and Amy Pascal are producing the film at Sony Pictures.

This sounds like an amazing idea. I'm a huge fan of Aaron Sokrin's writing and everything he has wrote has been just absolutely perfect, but one thing that's hard to do for anyone in the film business is to jump ship to another position in the film production. Often times actors turn into directors and there have only been a handful who have done it successfully so this will not be an easy task for Sorkin. The story sounds so compelling and interesting and it seems to be right up Sokin's alley so I'm curious to see how he'll handle his new job as director along with his duties of screenwriter.

Back in August, word came that a return trip to 1870s South Dakota was in the cards for the cast and crew of HBO’s unfairly-cancelled cult western series Deadwood. Now HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed to TVLine that series creator David Milch is all set for a Deadwood movie to hopefully wrap up all the loose ends. “David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” says Lombardo. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen. The understanding is that when he is done with [his current project] he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the ‘Deadwood’ film.” Once the cable network cancelled the show after a mere three 12-episode seasons, Milch’s original plan was to make two Deadwood movies and create a proper ending for the rivalry between Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and foul-mouthed pimp Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). Now it seems the only thing potentially standing in the way is Milch trying to corral all those busy actors back in the saddle. “I’m going to leave that in David’s hands,” Lombardo saiad. “He’s confident he will be able to. The cast is unbelievably [tight]. Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them.” Other cast members who may return for the Deadwood movie include Molly Parker, Jim Beaver, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Kim Dickens, Dora DuFran, Brad Dourif, Anna Gunn, John Hawkes and Jeffrey Jones.

This is pretty interesting news to hear. Not often do you hear of tv shows that have been off of the air for a while get feature length film and we got one back in 2015 with Entourage and that was also through HBO so maybe they are trying to start a trend. Now to be honest I have never seen an episode of Deadwood, but from what I've heard and read the shows seems like something I would be interested. I've never had a reason to watch it, but now if a film is in the works I guess I have to see it to sorta understand what in the world is going on. As I mentioned before this could begin a trend and we might see other shows from HBO or possibly Showtime that could get movies in the coming years.

20th Century Fox has just released a new international The Other Side of the Door trailer for the supernatural thriller starring The Walking Dead‘s Sarah Wayne Callies and you can check it out below. Directed by Johannes Roberts (who also scripted the film alongside Ernest Riera), The Other Side of the Door follows a family who are living an idyllic existence abroad. That is, until a tragic accident takes the life of their young son. The inconsolable mother (Sarah Wayne Callies) learns of an ancient ritual that will bring him back to say a final goodbye. She travels to an ancient temple, where a door serves as a mysterious portal between two worlds. But when she disobeys a sacred warning to never open that door, she upsets the balance between life and death. The Other Side of the Door also stars Jeremy Sisto. Produced by Alexandre Aja, Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh. It’s set to hit theaters March 11, 2016.

This was a pretty creepy trailer. Now while I say it's creepy, I honestly think it looks pretty stupid. Now while I say that I could end up probably being wrong and this could potentially be the best horror film of the year. I've not been sold Sarah Wayne Callies as an actress, but I've only had a small sample size to watch her on and hopefully she can prove me wrong with this film. However I'm going to keep stating this until it's no longer an issue, but I hate that horror movies come out when it's not even relatively close to Halloween. Now granted every horror film can do that, but a smaller one like this might benefit well with a Halloween crowd.
