Weekend Movie News 1-15-16 to 1-17-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first Suicide Squad poster ahead of the film’s new trailer, debuting on Tuesday night on the DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League special on The CW. You can view the Suicide Squad poster below. Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Focus) as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Easy Money) as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, Pan) as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El DIablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as The Joker. There’s also mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common. Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the Suicide Squad team has included countless DC villains among its ranks, including Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bane, Killer Frost, Poison Ivy, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn. The CW’s “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team. Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.

Suicide Squad

I really love this poster. It has it's own unique feel to and to it and it's a brand new original poster idea. I love how it shows all of the Suicide Squad together and it shows you just how crazy these characters are. I'm very glad that DC and Warner Bros. are using their CW shows to market their films and it will definitely draw a good audience and those that have The CW will not be disappointed with what we get Tuesday. I've already seen a snippet of the new trailer and it was pretty amazing and I'm excited to see the whole thing. This is a film I'm dying to see and hopefully August 5th can get here sooner rather than later.

Although the Academy Award winner became attached to the project back in August, Variety is today reporting that Christian Bale has exited director Michael Mann’s Enzo Ferrari biopic. According to the trade, Bale dropped the project after realizing he wouldn’t be able to gain the weight the role required in time for the film’s planned production start this spring. A replacement is expected to be announced soon. Enzo Ferrari’s bio on the official Ferrari website is listed as follows: Enzo Ferrari was born in Modena on February 18th 1898 and died on August 14th 1988. He devoted his entire life to designing and building sports cars and, of course, to the track. Having been made an official Alfa Romeo driver in 1924, within five years he had gone on to found the Scuderia Ferrari on Viale Trento Trieste in Modena which assisted mostly gentlemen drivers in racing their cars. In 1938, Enzo Ferrari was appointed head of Alfa Corse but quit the position in 1939 to set up his own company, Auto Avio Costruzioni, which operated out of the old Scuderia buildings. Ferrari has garnered over 5,000 victories on the world’s tracks and roads, becoming a modern-day legend in the process. In order to meet growing market demand, Enzo Ferrari sold the Fiat Group a 50% stake in the company in 1969, a figure that rose to 90% in 1988. Bale, who recently starred in Adam McKay’s The Big Short, previously worked with Michael Mann on 2009’s Public Enemies. He can next be seen in the period drama The Promise, starring opposite Oscar Isaac.

This is pretty disappointing news to hear. Christian Bale is one of the best actors in the business and he is one of my favorite actors and to see him leave this film is something I didn't want to hear because it would've been great to see him in this role. However I understand why he left because his body has to be a mess with everything he's had to do to it over his career. He had to gain weight for American Psycho, lose a lot of weight for The Machinest and then gain all of it back with muscle for The Dark Knight Trilogy and then had to lose a lot for The Fighter and then have to gain a whole lot for American Hustle and now losing a lot for The Big Short. I mean your body can only take so much over a long period of time so it's not surprising this is the reason and hopefully he can get back to healthy weight and stay there. I'm very curious as to who will replace him, but I wish Bale would've been in the film.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Danish actress Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, Nymphomaniac: Vol. I) has been cast in the role of Wonder Woman’s mother and queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, for the upcoming feature film. Some of Nielsen’s other recent credits include “The Good Wife,” “The Following,” and “Boss.” Starring Gal Gadot as the title hero, Wonder Woman also stars Chris Pine (Star Trek, The Finest Hours) Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (the “Harry Potter” films, The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Snowpiercer), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead). The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder, with Richard Suckle, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Rebecca Roven serving as executive producers. Joining Jenkins behind the camera are director of photography Matthew Jensen (Chronicle, Fantastic Four, HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (Amélie, A Very Long Engagement, Pan), Oscar-winning editor Martin Walsh (Chicago, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, V for Vendetta), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (The Dark Knight trilogy, Topsy-Turvy). Principal photography will take place on location in the UK, France and Italy. Set to open on June 23, 2017, the Wonder Woman movie is based on characters created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

This is a pretty interesting casting choice. She's a relatively unknown actress and aside from Nymphomaniac Vol.1 I've never seen her in anything else so this is going to be my first full time viewing experience with her in a prominent role  and I'm very anxious to see how she is in the role. I love how DC and Warner Bros. have assembled this cast with a few unknowns and a few familiar faces and I think everything is going to come together really well for the first ever female led solo comic book film.

Universal Pictures has revealed the first teaser poster for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dave Franco, Ike Barinholtz, Carla Gallo, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kiersey Clemons, Beanie Feldstein, Selena Gomez and Lisa Kudrow. You can check out the Neighbors 2 poster below and stay tuned for the trailer on Tuesday, January 19. The first film, made for just $18 million, earned an impressive $270 million at the worldwide box office in 2014. Nicholas Stoller is back in the director’s chair, writing alongside Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. In the sequel, now that Mac (Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Byrne) have a second baby on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the suburbs. But just as they thought they’d reclaimed the neighborhood and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Efron) and his brothers ever dreamed of being. Tired of their school’s sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do whatever the hell they want. When Shelby (Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect place just off campus, they won’t let the fact that it’s located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw. Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbor with the skills to bring down the new Greeks next door, the Radners—alongside best friends Jimmy (Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo)—bring in charismatic Teddy as their secret weapon. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas’ home. But if they think that their neighbors are going down without a fight, they have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and straight-up crazy. Rogen and Goldberg also produce Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising alongside James Weaver through their Point Grey Pictures banner. Cohen and O’Brien will serve as executive producers alongside Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising will be released in theaters on Friday, May 20, 2016.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

I really like this poster. It pretty much gives the feel of what the film is about and a few of the things we'll probably be getting in the film. The premise of the film sounds somewhat similar to the first film,  but it has a enough of a difference to make the film feel a little more original. I think this could be the funniest film of the year and it's predecessor was my favorite comedy of 2014 and I'm really looking forward to the film and hopefully the new trailer can get me even more excited for the film.

Following the earlier leak and speculation, Paramount Pictures has now officially released the 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer, which you can watch below. The 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer is currently playing in theaters with Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. About the Bad Robot film, producer J.J. Abrams said: “The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of ‘Cloverfield.’ The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.” Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the March 11, 2016 release stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. The script was written by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken.

This was a really great yet surprising trailer. Now to start off I wasn't a huge fan of the first Cloverfield film, but there are a lot of nice and redeeming qualities to it and I'm glad a sequel is happening. It's surprising in the sense that this came out of nowhere as in not having a clue this film was coming out and now the film is coming out it 2 months. I mean this is going to be a a really small yet short marketing campaign and hopefully it'll pay off in the long run. I don't expect many films to do this in the future, but for smaller films like this, if this campaign is successful  will try this a lot more.
