1-11-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Officially announced by Lucasfilm last year, The LEGO Movie helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are gearing up to direct a still-untitled Star Wars Anthology film that will follow Han Solo. While there have been rumors since the film was announced about who might become the new Han Solo, Variety today reports that the shortlist is down to about 12 names, eight of which are currently known. What’s more, the trade suggests that casting is happening now because of a potential appearance by the new Han Solo in this December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! Alleged candidates to play the new Han Solo include Emory Cohen (Brooklyn), Scott Eastwood (The Longest Ride), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some), Logan Lerman (Fury), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Miles Teller (Whiplash). The screenplay for the Han Solo movie is written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan and will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. Technically, the new film marks the second Han Solo casting from Lord and Miller. Voice actor Keith Ferguson played the part in their The LEGO Movie. Now, though, the search is on for a new star to take over the role made famous by Harrison Ford. Lawrence Kasdan, the writer and director known for Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill, and Grand Canyon, is familiar to “Star Wars” fans for having co-written the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His son Jon Kasdan wrote and directed The First Time, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and In the Land of Women, as well as writing for the television series “Freaks and Geeks” and “Dawson’s Creek.” Slated for a May 25, 2018 release, the Han Solo movie will be executive produced by Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin and co-produced by Will Allegra. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, meanwhile, hits theaters December 16, 2016.

This is a really nice list of actors. They all fit the role in a lot of different ways and I'd be happy with all of them except for a couple to play the iconic role made so famous by Harrison Ford. My personal choice would have to be Scott Eastwood simply because I think he has the look and plus he's Clint Eastwood's son and wouldn't be great for Scott to play the same type of role his father made famous back in the 60's. If I had to based on talent then the easy choice would be Logan Lerman just simply because I personally think he is the best of the bunch. I think that they all bring something to the table and I don't expect to here an announcement until at least Star Wars Celebration this summer.

With $120 million at the worldwide box office and now a Best Supporting actor Golden Globe for Sylvester Stallone, it’s no wonder that MGM CEO Gary Barber is moving so aggressively to get a sequel to Creed on the fast track. Barber has told Variety that the current plan is for Creed 2 to land in theaters in November of 2017, which may spell the end of director Ryan Coogler helming the second installment. Coogler is directing Marvel Studios’ Black Panther for a February 16, 2018 release, thus precluding him from simultaneously making Creed 2. Just last week Stallone predicted as much, saying that“There’s a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel. Three years is a little much.” Three years is the amount of time it will take until Coogler would be available after making the superhero movie. It’s all but assured that if MGM moves forward on Creed 2 without Coogler, the 29-year-old wunderkind will remain onboard as an executive producer and possibly guide another young filmmaker such as himself to recapture the lightning in a bottle they had this time out. Coogler has even had discussions with Stallone for the next installment, which could potentially mirror Rocky IV or even take a page from The Godfather Part II playbook and feature recurring flashbacks to Apollo Creed before his death. “You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian,” Stallone says. “There’s a lot there.” Coogler directed Creed from a screenplay he wrote with Aaron Covington, based on characters from the Rocky series written by Sylvester Stallone. The film was being produced by Robert Chartoff, Irwin Winkler, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler, Kevin King Templeton and Sylvester Stallone, with Nicholas Stern executive producing.

I really like this date for many reasons. I like it mainly due to the fact that it's going to come out around the same time that the first one did last year so it'll sort of continue the tradition of the other films in the franchise to come out around that time of year. As for the date I'm going to predict that it'll come out either the first weekend of November and go up against the My Little Pony film or they could go back to Thanksgiving weekend like they did for Crees. As for Coogler not coming back I've mentioned before that it's both good and bad for the franchise in the sense that you want the same cohesiveness for the sequel, but you also don't want someone to stay the director of a franchise for too long becasue the material may get stale. I'm sure whoever MGM picks they'll have to go through Sylvester Stallone for approval, but I'm sure they'll make the right choice.

First rumored last month, Creed director Ryan Coogler has now officially taken the director’s chair on Marvel Studios‘ upcoming “Phase Three” entry, Black Panther. Coogler made his feature film debut with the acclaimed Fruitvale Station, which was also headlined by Creed star Michael B. Jordan. “We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,” says Kevin Feige of the Creed director. “The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’  Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.” Chadwick Boseman is set to star as Black Panther‘s title hero. The film features a script by Joe Robert Cole and is set for release on February 16, 2018. It’s unclear what other characters will appear in the film, though Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, who made his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, could appear as the pair have already allegedly crossed paths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Boseman will make his debut as the character in Captain America: Civil War, slated to debut in theaters May 6, 2016.

I really like this choice for the Black Panther film. Ryan Coogler has become a star in the past two years and each film he does he gets better and better and the projects become bigger and bigger and the fact that third film he's ever directed is going to be a Marvel movie says a lot about the confidence Kevin Feige and company have in the guy. I personally wanted to see Antoine Fuqua direct and maybe bring along Denzel Washington to play King T'Chaka which is Black Panther's father, but I'm still happy with the choice. I think this is going to be a magnificent film with Coogler at the helm and I'm excited to see what he does with a Marvel film.

Lionsgate‘s Robin Hood: Origins has today found its Little John in the form of a big star: Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained, Ray). According to Deadline, the Academy Award winner’s take on the character will be as “a battle hardened but war weary veteran of The Crusades who starts out distrustful of Robin Hood (they fought on opposite sides), and then warms to the young hero.” Described as an origin story in the vein of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Robin Hood: Origins aims for a new take on the folk hero. The story finds Robin Hood (played by Kingsman: The Secret Service‘s Taron Egerton) returning from The Crusades to discover a Sherwood Forest rife with corruption and evil. Teaming with a band of outlaws, he takes matters into his own hands to set things right, with very little merry-making along the way. Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies) will play Maid Marion. Said to feature a “gritty” tone, the script for Robin Hood: Origins hails from Joby Harold, who recently penned Guy Ritchie’s revisionist take on Camelot titled Knights of the Roundtable. The film will be produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson along with Harold and Tory Tunnell’s Safe House Prods. Foxx will next star in Open Road’s cop thriller Sleepless Night, and will soon begin shooting a co-starring role in Edgar Wright’s musical heist film Baby Driver opposite Ansel Elgort and Lily James.

I think this is terrific casting.Jamie Foxx is one of the most charismatic actors working in the business today and I think he is the perfect choice for this role. I think putting him in this film opposite of Taron Egerton is a brilliant idea because it will help Egerton learn more and become a better actor acting off of someone like Foxx. This film sounds really interesting and it's been a while since we've seen a good Robin Hood film and hopefully this film can break the trend of bad Robin Hood films.

Back in October, it was reported that Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) had entered talks to headline a mystery indie project from Academy Award nominee Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler). Now Variety has confirmed that said film will indeed be Aronofsky’s next project, and that Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) is in talks to co-star with Lawrence. This story is said to center on “a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.” Whether this is meant to indicate a Funny Games-style home invasion story or a Carnage-like dramedy of manners is unknown, though we can expect more details to emerge as casting continues. With a spring shoot locked in and a release set for 2017, the untitled film has found a home at Paramount Pictures, who distributed Aronofsky’s last movie Noah to a robust $362 million worldwide. However, production house New Regency–with whom Aronofsky has a first-look deal–passed on the project before Paramount picked it up. Could that indicate that New Regency seems to think the film lacks commercial potential, despite the star power of Lawrence? Aronofsky is set to write, direct and produce through his own Protozoa Pictures along with Scott Franklin and Ari Handel. Bardem landed his role after Idris Elba became unavailable due to a potential start date for playing Roland in Sony’s The Dark Tower, a role that Bardem had ironically once been attached to. Bardem will next be seen in Disney’s blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on July 7, 2017.

This is brilliant casting. Javier Bardem is an actor who is pretty much good in everything he does even his bad films (aka The Counselor) and him working with Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence sounds like this film could be positioned to be an Oscar caliber film. Aronofsky is one of my favorite directors and while our personal beliefs are vastly different, I still think he is an amazing director and it shows when actors of Lawrence and Bardem's caliber want to be in his film. The film sounds intriguing and it's one I am definitely looking forward to in 2017.
