4-18-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released a new video featuring Godzilla director Gareth Edwards talking about taking the film seriously. You can check it out in the video below.

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on May 16, the Gareth Edwards-directed film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

I really like what Edwards had to say. Godzilla is a serious film and has a lot of adult themes to it. I also like how it took the filming seriously (unlike Roland Emmerich did in the 1998 version of Godzilla). I'm really excited for this film and I can't wait to see it.

We've previously seen set photos, but the Daily Mail has published the first two official photos from Macbeth (which you can check out below), the Justin Kurzel-directed film starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

A new adaptation of William Shakespeare's period tragedy, the film will retain the play's 11th century setting and is said to use the original dialogue as well. The story follows the devious Macbeth, a Scottish lord who will stop at nothing to become King.

I really like these images. It's looks as if we are going to get a darker version of the classic Shakespearean tale. Also you can sign me up for anything that stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

Although RED and R.I.P.D. helmer Robert Schwentke was said to be eyeing the project last year, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Walt Disney Pictures is looking at setting Craig Gillespie (the man behind their upcoming true sports story Million Dollar Arm) to direct the period coast guard rescue story The Finest Hours. What's more, they're looking at setting Star Trek's Chris Pine to headline.

The film, adapted by Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, is based on the book by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Touglas, officially described as follows:

In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor'easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril, setting the stage for one of the most heroic rescue stories ever lived. In the early hours of Monday, February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, found themselves in the same horrifying predicament. Built with "dirty steel," and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic's mercy. The Finest Hours is the gripping, true story of the valiant attempt to rescue the souls huddling inside the broken halves of the two ships.

This sounds really interesting to me. I really like movies that are based on true stories because you get to see how certain things became to be or how certain events happened. I also like the casting of Chris Pine who in the blink of an eye has become one of the best leading men in Hollywood today.

Steven Spielberg is set to produce and potentially direct a big screen adaptation of David Kertzer's The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, Variety reports. Tony Kushner, who worked with Spielberg on both Munich and Lincoln, will adapt the screenplay from Kertzer's 1997 novel, officially described as follows:

Bologna, 1858: A police squad, acting on the orders of the Inquisitor, invades the home of a Jewish merchant, Momolo Mortara, wrenches his crying six-year-old son from his arms, and rushes him off in a carriage bound for Rome. His mother is so distraught that she collapses and has to be taken to a neighbor's house, but her weeping can be heard across the city.

I'm not really surprised by this news. Spielberg is historically known for directing big historical dramas and has done a masterful job at them so far. I'm very curious how he handles this one and hopefully it's a movie that we talk about 50 years from now and say it is one of the greatest of all-time.

When Sinister 2 moves into production this summer, it will do so under the direction of Citadel helmer Ciaran Foy. Sinister 2 is being penned by Derrickson and returning scribe C. Robert Cargill. No plot details have been revealed, but ShockTillYouDrop.com received a brief update from producer Jason Blum last month. "If you love the tone of the first film, you'll love this," he says. "Plus, it's got a lot of new stuff in it!"

Production begins on Sinister 2 this July through Blumhouse Productions and eOne.

I'm a little skeptical about this move. Usually when you hear about a film changing directors from the first film you become a little scared on the changes that a new director might bring and could possibly ruin the mojo that the first film had. What really gets me in the news is that the new director stated that along with some stuff from the first film, that there will be some new stuff added to the mix so it makes me really excited for this film and i hope it lives up to the original (which I really enjoyed).
