Weekend Movie News 7-24-15 to 7-26-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

After becoming the third highest grossing movie of all time yesterday, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have officially announced a follow-up to Jurassic World is set for release on June 22, 2018 and that stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Producer Frank Marshall once again joins Spielberg in leading the team of filmmakers for the next chapter in the franchise. The film will be written by Jurassic World’s director, Colin Trevorrow, and Derek Connolly. Spielberg will be joined by Trevorrow as executive producer on the film. Playing now in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters, and having grossed over $1.5 billion at the global box office., Jurassic World offers a terrifying sci-fi adventure set 22 years after the events of Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 Michael Crichton adaption, Jurassic Park. According to Trevorrow, a huge part of what sparked his take on the blockbuster franchise was the image of a teenager texting, unimpressed with the T. Rex behind the glass in front of him. Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, The LEGO Movie), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help, Spider-Man 3), Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Iron Man 3), Jake Johnson (Let’s Be Cops, “New Girl”), Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer), Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man), Vincent D’Onofrio (“Daredevil,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”), BD Wong (Jurassic Park, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Intouchables), Judy Greer (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Tomorrowland), Katie McGrath (NBC’s “Dracula,” “Merlin”), Lauren Lapkus (Blended, The To Do List) and Andy Buckley (Bridesmaids, The Other Guys).

This isn't surprising news at all. Now before Jurassic World exploded at the box office, there were already plans to do either two films or  to make a new trilogy so this was happening, but it also helped the cause of a sequel now that Jurassic World is the third highest grossing film of all-time. I do like the release date simply because it is in the range that you need to do a sequel in. Plus it helps that as of right now that it has no competition, but it is sandwiched in between a Pixar film and How to Train Your Dragon 3, so it will have a little competition, but I still think the film will do just fine.

Fans were happy when director Bryan Singer used X-Men: Days of Future Past as an opportunity to clean house after several unloved entries in the franchise wrecked havoc with characters and continuity. Now it seems Singer might perform that same function on the yet-to-be-released Fantastic Four, using that most Marvel of tactics: An X-Men and Fantastic Four crossover. “Those ideas are in play,” he told Yahoo Movies. “That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it. It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say.” Some might wonder if the upcoming Josh Trank-rebooted Fantastic Four movie, which had rumors of a troubled production and has already drawn the ire of comic fans for playing fast-and-loose with the beloved residents of the Baxter Building, will do enough justice to the property in order to sustain a franchise. Even Singer is cautiously skeptical about how the new movie will be received:  “We’ll have to see how the films turn out,” he said of both Fantastic Four and his own upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, which also softly reboots the X-Men with younger versions of the core team. “To just say you’re going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that.” Being that the two movies share a screenwriter/producer in the form of the ever-prolific Simon Kinberg, it makes sense that a synergistic pow-wow between him, Singer,  producer Lauren Schuler-Donner and even 20th Century Fox may have taken place, although we’ll have to wait until the new FF bows on August 7 to know if these early discussions shall bear fruit. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued into X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Bryan Singer directed X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.

I really like these comments. On one hand Singer seems very confident that this crossover will eventually happen as a lot of us have speculated. On the other hand I like that he is being realistic in saying that if the new Fantastic Four film doesn't do well (I have faith that X-Men: Apocalypse will be just fine) then the crossover plans will have to be put on hold. I personally think Fantastic Four is going to do well enough at the box office that a couple weeks after the films release, Fox will announce a crossover film probably in 2018 or 2019. I've been a big advocate for the new Fantastic Four film and I hope it doesn't let me down.

The sequel to Universal Pictures’ 2014 break-out comedy Neighbors is already in the works, scheduled for May 13, 2016 and appropriately dubbed Neighbors 2 (at least so far), and Variety is reporting that actress Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, The Equalizer) is in talks to join the returning cast of Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. It will be the 18-year-old actresses’ first straight comedy. The original movie about a young couple (Rogen and Byrne) whose lives were disrupted when a frathouse (run by Efron) moves in next door grossed $269 million, but so far, there’s no word on what the plot for a sequel might be or who Moretz might play. The sequel will be written by Andrew Jay Cohen, Brendan O’Brien along with producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and returning director Nicholas Stoller. Moretz’s next two films are Dark Places with Charlize Theron and Sony’s young adult adaptation The Fifth Wave.

If this comes to fruition then this is great casting. Chloe Grace Moretz is one of the most talented young actresses in the business and I think putting her in this type of film is a great idea. A lot of people have speculated that she'll probably be the leader of a sorority house that moves in next door to Seth Rogen and Rose Bryne's character. Honestly everything from the first film will be the reverse as the last one and I don't know how that will work out. I really enjoyed the first film and it was easily the best comedy of 2014 and hopefully the sequel can live up to the first film.

It has been nine months since Dwayne Johnson took to social media to announce his involvement in Paramount Pictures’ Baywatch movie with a photo of himself atop a jet ski. Today, Variety reports that the film now has a director! Seth Gordon, who launched his career with the video game documentary The King of Kong and who went on to helm comedies like Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, will take the director’s chair on the long-gestating big screen version of the hit television series. “This is my beach bitch!” Johnson wrote when he first announced his connection to the film last year. “Rumors are true… we’re making #BAYWATCH the movie. Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo running on the beach… #WhoNeedsMouthToMouth #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha” Although several writers have been attached to Baywatch, the most recent draft hails from the Friday the 13th pair of Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Earlier reports suggested that the film will offer a comedy-heavy take that has little to do with the original series. Parts were reportedly written, however, for both Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff to reprise their roles. Whether or not that remains the plan is, at the moment, unconfirmed.

I really like this idea and this a great choice for a director. Seth Gordon has been hit and miss, but he's been more good than bad. I honestly think that putting The Rock in the film with any director is a great idea. I think he is the perfect fit for this type of film and his comedy has gotten better and better over the years and this could be a really hilarious film. I honestly don't think that Anderson and Hasselhoff should come back especially if they aren't going to follow the series, but it would be cool if they had really small cameos.

While his latest, The Martian, is set to hit the big screen October 2, Ridley Scott has, according to a story published today at The Hollywood Reporter, signed on to helm a big screen adaptation of author Don Winslow’s recent bestseller, The Cartel. What’s more, Deadline chimed in soon thereafter with the update that 20th Century Fox is looking to get Leonardo DiCaprio to headline. Published just last month, The Cartel is officially described on Don Winslow’s official site as follows: From the internationally best-selling author of the acclaimed novel The Power of the Dog comes The Cartel, a gripping, true-to-life, ripped-from-the-headlines epic story of power, corruption, revenge, and justice spanning the past decade of the Mexican-American drug wars. It’s 2004. DEA agent Art Keller has been fighting the war on drugs for thirty years in a blood feud against Adán Barrera, the head of El Federación, the world’s most powerful cartel, and the man who brutally murdered Keller’s partner. Finally putting Barrera away cost Keller dearly—the woman he loves, the beliefs he cherishes, the life he wants to lead. Then Barrera gets out, determined to rebuild the empire that Keller shattered. Unwilling to live in a world with Barrera in it, Keller goes on a ten-year odyssey to take him down. His obsession with justice—or is it revenge?—becomes a ruthless struggle that stretches from the cities, mountains, and deserts of Mexico to Washington’s corridors of power to the streets of Berlin and Barcelona. Keller fights his personal battle against the devastated backdrop of Mexico’s drug war, a conflict of unprecedented scale and viciousness, as cartels vie for power and he comes to the final reckoning with Barrera—and himself—that he always knew must happen. The Cartel is a story of revenge, honor, and sacrifice, as one man tries to face down the devil without losing his soul. It is the story of the war on drugs and the men—and women—who wage it. Assuming he signs on, DiCaprio would play the Keller role in the feature film adaptation, which will likely blend plot elements of The Cartel with its literary predecessor, The Power of the Dog. Winslow’s creative partner, Shane Salerno will provide the screenplay. Salerno previously provided the screenplay for Oliver Stone’s recent Winslow adaptation, Savages.

I honestly don't know how to feel about the film. On one hand if Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be in the film then I'm really excited for it because he always brings a great performance. On the other hand hearing that Ridley Scott will be directing kind of makes me nervous because he has been on a cold streak and I'm just not sure how good this film will be. For me to get a little excited about this film, his next film The Martian has to be knocked out of the park because if this film isn't great then his career could almost officially be over as a director.
