My Review of The Terminator Franchise

With Terminator Genisys being released this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review the other films in the Terminator franchise. So without further ado...

The Terminator

A Cyborg (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) has been sent from the future on a deadly mission, it has been programmed to kill a young woman named Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton). Sarah has no idea that her life will have a staggering effect on the fate of mankind and that she is in danger of being killed at the hands of an inescapable machine known as the Terminator. Kyle Reese (played by Michael Biehn) has also been sent from the future, but his mission is to protect the unknowing mother of a future leader. Is there any way to stop the death of an innocent when the relentless Cyborg is set on his course...

This is an insanely awesome film. James Cameron came up one of the most original ideas in Hollywood and he has created a rich and tremendous universe for future films to build off of. I really Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film mainly because he was himself and he didn't have to hardly at all to come across as intimidating and brutal. Linda Hamilton is great in the other lead role along side Micheal Biehn. The film is action-packed and the visuals are on a whole other level compared to films from 1984 (the year of it's release). I also like how Cameron was able to make an action also be a horror film in the sense that their is a futuristic cyborg traveling back in time to kill you. Overall its a fantastic film that is is horrific, violent and exciting all at the same time and that's what makes it one of the greatest sci-fi films of all-time. I give The Terminator a 10 out of 10.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Terminator2poster.jpg

Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton), now a single mother to rebellious teen John Connor (played by Edward Furlong), during the late nineties. Having been informed by a time-traveling soldier in the first film that John will one day grow up to become humanity's savior from a computer-controlled Armageddon, Sarah has responded by becoming a muscle-bound she-warrior bent on educating John in survival tactics and battle strategies. Her ranting about humankind's future has landed Sarah in an insane asylum and John in the foster care system. The rebellious John has responded to his situation by getting into scrapes with the law. When a new and improved Terminator android called the T-1000 (played by Robert Patrick) arrives from the future to eliminate John, an older model T-800 (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is sent to protect the boy. The T-1000, however, has the ability to morph itself into any shape it desires, allowing it chameleon-like powers and near indestructibility.

This is such a fun and action-packed film. Normally sequels are disappointing because the first film is just so fantastic and put on a pedestal that is hard to reach. However, this film does just that and me personally this is my favorite film of the franchise. James Cameron takes this film and builds upon the universe that he has created and it presents a lot of interesting ways and ideas that the franchise could go in. Another thing that is great about Cameron's ability is the way he pushed the boundaries of special effects whit the technology that is available to him. It has a lot of mindless action that goes above and beyond what the first film could ever do. Overall there is nothing I can really say about the film other than it is a staple in film history and there are so many words to describe how great this film. I give Terminator 2: Judgement Day a 10 out of 10.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines movie.jpg

Set ten years after the events of 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the film finds John Connor (played by Nick Stahl) living on the streets as a common laborer. Sarah Connor, his mother, has since died, and their efforts in the second film have not stopped the creation of SkyNet artificial intelligence network. As he will still become the leader of the human resistance, Connor is once again targeted by a Terminator sent from the future by SkyNet. This new Terminator, T-X (played by Kristanna Loken), is a female and is more powerful than any of her predecessors. To protect Connor, the human resistance sends a new T-101 (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) back from the future.

This was a really disappointing film. Coming off two amazing films in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day a lot of people expected this film to be almost on par with those two films. I say almost simply because James Cameron didn't return to the director's chair this time around. The film is a giant mess and it doesn't build upon the universe that surrounds it. The entire movie is just John Conner, his future wife (in the film) and The Terminator running away from a new model and it's just so repetitive throughout. I will say that Nick Stahl is a major upgrade from Edward Furlong, but what the film is missing is Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. Don't get me wrong Claire Danes tries hard to replace her, but to no avail. I will say that the film does have a lot of great action scenes, but it's just not enough. Overall the film has some great action scenes and better performances, but the story is just repetitive and a lot of it is hard to follow. I give Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines a 3 out of 10.

Terminator Salvation
A skeleton-like machine with bright red eyes holding a gun in the background, while two men in battle fatigues, one of them holding a rifle, stand in the foreground. Below them are the credits, tagline and title.

Opening in the year 2018, Terminator Salvation finds John Connor (played by Christian Bale)'s certainty about the future shaken by the sudden appearance of a mysterious stranger named Marcus Wright (played by Sam Worthington), whose last memory is of sitting on death row and awaiting execution. Unable to determine whether Marcus was sent from the future or rescued from the past, Connor begins to wonder whether there is still any hope left for the human race as the robots grow more powerful and aggressive than ever before. It appears that Skynet is preparing a devastating final attack designed to eliminate the human resistance once and for all, leaving Connor and Marcus with no choice but to strike back at the cybernetic heart of Skynet's operations. Once there, the two battle-scarred soldiers discover a devastating secret regarding the potential annihilation of all humankind.

I don't know how to describe this film other than it is a steaming pile crap. It completely disregards the universe around it goes off on it's own tangent that doesn't make any sense. The film feels like a music video and it's mainly because of director McG who is know for directing music videos. It's sad when you see an actor of Christian Bale dragged into this film and then completely mails in his entire performance. I never thought I would say this about a Terminator film, but this film bored me to tears and it completely ruined the entire franchise for me. Overall this film is a complete mess, there is nothing redeemable about it and it one of the worst films ever made. I give Terminator Salvation a 0 out of 10.

Overall Average Franchise Rating:  6.5
