Weekend Movie News 7-17-15 to 7-19-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

20th Century Fox has released The Revenant trailer! Opening in limited theaters on Christmas Day, the action adventure expands wide on January 8, 2016. Inspired by true events, The Revenant is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. The Revenant is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel). Also starring Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, the film is based on the novel by Michael Punke. Mark Smith and Iñárritu wrote the script for the movie, produced by Arnon Milchan, Steve Golin, David Kanter, Keith Redmon, and Iñárritu.

All I can say about the trailer is HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING! From the very moment that I heard about this film I have been excited for it. One the main reasons for my excitement it because of everyone who is involved in the film. I mean you have Alejandro G. Inarritu who is coming off of winning Best Director at this past year's Oscars as well as directing the film that won Best Picture (Birdman), you have two of the best actors in the business today in Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy and two of the best young actors in Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson. I'm already going to call it and say that this film is going to get a lot of attention at the Oscars next year and I'm making a bold prediction that everyone will love. Me a few people online agree that this has to be the film in which Leonardo DiCaprio gets nominated for an Oscar, but that he will win the Oscar. I know it's early, but this is one prediction that I'm almost certain will come true.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein are in talks to write the Spider-Man script, according to THR. Daley and Goldstein were actually among the finalists for the Spidey directing job before it went to Jon Watts (Cop Car). The duo’s Vacation, which they wrote and are making their directorial debut on, will open in theaters on July 29. They previously worked on Horrible Bosses and its sequel, as well as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. In June, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced that, following a lengthy casting process, actor Tom Holland (The Impossible, In the Heart of the Sea) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in their next Spider-Man film, which is set to hit theaters on July 28. 2017. Joining Holland in the cast is Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, who is expected to appear with Holland first in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both Holland and the director. The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests. Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job. Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

I really like this choice in writers. Now if you look at their filmography of writing films they are about 50/50 with me as I really liked Horrible Bosses and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and I didn't really like Horrible Bosses 2 or The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and I haven't see Vacation to really judge them on that just yet. I think fits along with Marvel and Sony are wanting to do with Spider-Man and that's to make it like a John Hughes film and in John Hughes's films there is a lot of comedy so it makes sense to hire comedy writers. Eventhough I might not have liked the choice for was chosen as Spider-Man, but knowing that he will apart of the MCU makes everything a little bit better.

Slowly but surely, information continues to trickle in about Paul Feig‘s upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, set to star Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones. Feig has once again taken to Twitter, revealing the character names for the team. Who ya gonna call? The answer there is Patty Tolan (Jones), Abby Yates (McCarthy), Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon).  “I’m having a lot of fun playing with genres,” Feig told ComingSoon.net of the new film earlier this year, “…I love the original film, but I also just love the idea of busting ghosts and kind of paranormal warriors. I thought, ‘You know, if I could do this with the funny women I know and kind of just do a new origin story…’ I’m more interested in what would happen today. You know, you see things on TV about ghosts, but none of it’s real. What if, suddenly, something started happening? What happens when that just begins to happen to people? Also, how do they develop their technology? It’s not as fun if they’re just handed their proton packs. It’s why it’s not as fun to do a sequel. The fun is getting there.” The film is also set feature Andy Garcia as the Mayor of New York City, Michael K. Williams as a character named “Hawkins,”  Matt Walsh as a character named “Rourke,” Chris Hemsworth as the Ghostbusters’ secretary and Neil Casey as the film’s villain. New York City’s NY1 news anchor Pat Kiernan is also set to appear as news anchor in the film. Directed by Feig from a script he co-wrote with Katie Dippold, Ghostbusters is currently filming in New York City with plans for additional photography in Boston. The film is targeting a July 22, 2016 release.

I really like these names for the characters. What this does however is pretty much debunk my thought that one the female characters would be the daughter of Dan Akyroyd's character. I'm still holding out hope that this could still be true, but it's looking less and less likely. This also helps us start to get recognized with the characters almost a year before the film comes out. After coming to realization that this was happening, I've started to get more and more entertained by the idea of the film and with everyone involved I'm excited to see the film.

We’ve heard many reports on the role of several characters in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, including Black Panther and the returning General Ross. Now, in an interview with BadTaste. It, “Sherlock” star Martin Freeman provides a tease for his character and offered some new details. “He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.”  Set for release in the United States on May 6, 2016, Captain America: Civil War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. It is set to feature the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, this time joined in his “solo” film by fellow Avengers Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Sebastian Stan will also be back as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier alongside Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man. The film is also supposed to debut Marvel’s new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

I really like these comments. Now let me say that I honestly don't have a clue who Martin Freeman is playing, but with these comments, I'm thinking he will be on the same side as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the sense that superheros need somebody to answer to for their actions. It goes right along with the Civil War comic book storyline and I'm really excited to see it. It's going to be really fun to see which comic book film will win 2016 and it's possible that any one of the 7, yes I said 7 will win the year.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that acclaimed director David Gordon Green (George Washington, Pineapple Express) has signed on to direct Lionsgate’s Boston Marathon Bombing project titled Stronger. Based on the non-fiction survivor’s memoir of the same name by Jeff Bauman (with Bret Whitter), it tells Bauman’s story of waiting for his girlfriend to cross the finish line on April 15, 2013 when two pressure cooker bombs exploded killing three and wounding 260. Bauman lost both his legs and became a key witness in the ensuing manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the former having been sentenced to death this past May.  Bauman’s story of recuperation and triumph is being adapted to the screen by writers John Pollono (Sex & Marriage) and Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter), and produced by Silver along with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films. Gordon Green just directed Al Pacino to solid reviews in the drama Manglehorn, and has the political dramedy Our Brand Is Crisis starring Sandra Bullock in post-production.

This an interesting choice. I say that because this guy is mostly known for comedies such as Pineapple Express and Your Highness, so for him to take on a serious film like this is an interesting choice. It's not like it hasn't been done before with other directors so there is a lot of hope for this to be a good film. The film has some really great writers on board and all they need now is someone in the lead role and it'll be interesting to see who will get the part.
